MOC's Mills named Player of the Week

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive sweeper Brandon Mills was named Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week, it was announced Tuesday. Mills becomes the second Trojan to win the award, joining Reid Clewis who won the award in early September.

Mills, a junior from Swansboro, helped Mount Olive's defense limit Queens to one goal in the Trojans' 2-1 victory Saturday, Queens' first loss in regular season conference play since 2001. The win was Mount Olive's first ever against Queens, which had its 41-match unbeaten streak snapped. Mills helped the Trojan defense hold Queens to six shots on goal.

Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Murfreesboro, N.C., to take on Chowan in a non-conference match-up. Match time is 4 p.m.

STILL IN TOP 25: Mount Olive remained in the top 25 for the sixth consecutive week, coming in at No. 23 in this week's NSCAA/Adidas Division II Men's Soccer Top 25, it was announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The Trojans slip one spot from last week's No. 22 ranking. Mount Olive holds at No. 3 in this week's Southeast Regional poll.

The Trojans are 9-3-1 overall and tied for second in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference standings at 5-1-0.

The Trojans debuted at No. 22 in the national poll five weeks ago for their first-ever national ranking and spent the next two weeks at No. 13 before jumping to No. 7 for the team's first-ever top 10 national ranking.

GOLF: Lindsey Snyder carded a 79 Tuesday to place among the 20 lowest scores out of 107 golfers in the second round of the Lenoir-Rhyne/Myrtle Beach Women's Golf Intercollegiate.

Snyder finished the two-round tournament tied for 44th with a 167.

Deborah Woodrum was 87th with a 98-89--187, while Kristen Freeman finished 88th with an 89-99--188 and Brianna Whatley placed 99th with a 102-100--202.

Mount Olive finished 19th out of 21 teams with a 377-367--744. Mount Olive was one of seven Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference teams competing in the tournament. First-round leader West Florida held on for the win.

The tournament concludes Mount Olive women's golf fall season. The Trojans resume play in the spring.

Mount Olive men's golf concludes fall play next Monday and Tuesday at the Charlotte Shootout.
