Eastern Wayne JVs upend archrival Southern Wayne

Defense and special teams helped Eastern Wayne turn back archrival Southern Wayne 16-12 in their Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference junior varsity football game at New Hope.

Anthony Williams paced the Warriors with 14 tackles and one fumble hit. Orlando Midgette added eight tackles. Foy Coley had six tops and Stacy Edwards contributed five tackles and a quarterback sack.

Edwards, who also rushed for 50 yards, and David White accounted for Eastern Wayne's touchdowns. Eric Brofft emerged the Warriors' top rusher with 72 yards.

"I thought the key to the game was our special teams," said Eastern Wayne coach Brent Holland. "Eric did a great job punting in wet conditions, keeping them pinned inside their 20. They had to drive a long field all night and never had any short-field drives."

Saints quarterback Ren Dewitt threw a 40-yard touchdown pass to Alex Aldridge and Eric Futrell added a rushing touchdown. Futrell amassed a game-high 204 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Kelvin Flower and Kenny Casper combined for 125 yards on the ground.

Daquan Cozart led Southern Wayne's defense with eight tackles, three assists and one fumble recovery. Adrian Amerson contributed five tackles and two assists. Casper added five tackles.

Eastern Wayne (4-1, 1-0) travels to Wilson Hunt next Thursday. Meanwhile, Southern Wayne (4-2, 0-1) is the guest of Wilson Beddingfield.

Each game kicks off at 7 p.m.

Aycock defense stifles Bruins

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's defense held Wilson Beddingfield to only two first downs as the Golden Falcons defeated Wilson Beddingfield 12-8 on Thursday at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Aycock's Stephen Strouse had one rushing touchdown and one passing touchdown to Bryant Hill. The Falcons' Joveneta Taylor rushed for 83 yards in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference game.

Aycock (5-1, 1-0 ECC) travels to Kinston next Thursday.

9th grade

Warriors pull out close win

Southern Wayne quarterback T.J. Garner threw two touchdown passes in a 14-12 loss against archrival Eastern Wayne at Little Big Horn.

Eric Hinton and Marcus Little each hauled in one touchdown reception from Garner, who finished the contest with three completions.

Josh Carr led the Saints' rushing attack with 66 yards.

Xavier Skinner emerged Southern Wayne's top tackler with 11 stops. Keron Ward had nine tackles. Edward Hinton provided five tackles and four assists.

Volleyball

Chargers swept in CPIC 1-A/2-A play

Stephanie Knutson provided a team-high five kills in Wayne Country Day's 22-25, 13-25, 23-25 loss against Greenfield on the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference scene.

Knutson added three digs on defense for the Chargers, who slipped to 3-7 in conference play.

Sammy Schurhammer contributed four kills, three digs and two service aces. Ashley Clark dished out a team-high five assists to go along with four aces and one dig.

Kayla Flanagan recorded three digs.

Wayne Country Day (7-10) travels to North Johnston on Monday.

Games rescheduled/canceled

MOUNT OLIVE -- Rain forced the cancellation of Friday's non-conference girls' tennis match between Charles B. Aycock and Clayton. The match will not be rescheduled.

Aycock will not travel to 2-A power Greene Central on Monday afternoon. The Golden Falcons will finish their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference schedule at county rival Southern Wayne. The match is slated for a 4 p.m. start at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center on the Mount Olive College campus.

Monday's boys' soccer game between North Lenoir and Greene Central has been moved to next Friday at 4:30 p.m. The change occurred after the Rams' football game with North Pitt was rained out Friday.

Wayne Country Day's junior varsity and varsity boys' soccer matches with Kerr-Vance Academy have been rescheduled for Oct. 17 on the Chargers' field. The JV contest begins at 3:30 p.m. with the varsity match approximately scheduled for a 4:45 start.

Middle schools

Norwayne soccer 10, Goldsboro 0 -- Tyler Ruffin collected two goals and dished out three assists for the unbeaten Cobras. Tucker Pearson contributed two goals and two assists. David Burke provided two goals. Patrick Shultz, Miles Claiborne, Ryan Bunn and William Tamura each scored one goal. Norwayne (3-0-1) entertains Spring Creek next Monday afternoon.

Norwayne football 44, Brogden 0 -- Will White rambled for 155 yards and three touchdowns as the Cobras handed the Rams their first loss of the season. Linwood Grantham added 110 yards and two TDs. White emerged the defensive leader with 11 tackles. A.B. Scott, Ricky Bell and Matt Stover each recorded six tackles. Norwayne (4-0) won its Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I opener and plays host to Greenwood next Thursday afternoon.

Eastern Wayne soccer 3, Brogden 1 -- Leslie Cox, Nick Baker and Nick Bowden each tallied a goal for the Warriors. Eric Suncin dished out two assists and Baker added one. Michael Martin scored the Rams' lone goal on an assist from Angel Sanchez. Eastern Wayne (5-0-1) plays host to Grantham next Monday. Brogden (3-1-1) travels to Norwayne next Thursday afternoon.
