Princeton tops Panthers

PRINCETON -- Cynthia Peedin collected a team-high eight kills and Stephanie Daughtry added seven in Princeton's 25-23, 25-21, 25-8 sweep of archrival North Johnston in Class 1-A Carolina Conference volleyball action Thursday afternoon.

The Bulldogs (8-5) claimed sole possession of second place in the Carolina Conference at 5-3 heading into next Tuesday's home match against Ayden-Grifton.

Peedin added two blocks and Daughtry registered four service aces and 12 digs for Princeton, which won its fourth consecutive match. Kaitlyn Haddock contributed five kills and nine digs.

Brittany Rose dished out a team-high 12 assists, while Brittany Davis handed out nine assists to go with seven digs on defense.

"The girls did an excellent job tonight working together as a team," said Princeton coach Trudy Rast. "If one person missed the ball, someone else was right there to dig it out.

"We had good communication on the court and great movement."

Sarah Gibbs chipped in four kills, two blocks and two assists. Kristen Parker served a team-high six aces.

Rebels suffer

conference defeat

CALYPSO -- Senior middle hitter Sierra Ward recorded a double-double -- 14 kills, 10 digs -- in North Duplin's 25-23, 23-25, 17-25, 27-29 loss against Carolina 1-A Conference foe Ayden-Grifton on Thursday afternoon.

Ward also collected six blocks and three service aces for the Rebels, who suffered their fifth consecutive loss in Carolina Conference play.

Heather Hudson, Casey Pate, Julie Ivey and Kayla Myers each had six digs on defense. Pate served three aces.

Vanessa Lynch dished out four assists.

"Ayden simply played the last three games better than we did," said North Duplin coach Heather Best. "We tried to come back in the end, but we couldn't pull it out."

North Duplin (6-6) travels to Rosewood next Tuesday.

North Pitt

clips N. Lenoir

BETHEL -- North Pitt swept North Lenoir 25-22, 25-23, 27-25 in their Eastern Plains 2-A Conference match Thursday afternoon.

Brittany Sanders collected eight kills, while Kayla Sutton had six.

Lyndsey Phillips finished the night 21-for-21 on serve.

North Lenoir (5-13, 3-5 EPC) entertains league newcomer Goldsboro next Tuesday afternoon. Match time is 5 p.m. at Wooten Gymnasium.

Warrior spikers

sweep Goldsboro

Eastern Wayne defeated Goldsboro 25-14, 25-9, 26-24 in non-conference play on Wednesday at the Cougar Den.

Goldsboro coach Marquita Raynor praised the efforts of Shaconda Johnson and Lavenia Lipford.

The Cougars (0-17) travel to Farmville on Thursday in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference action. The Warriors return to action Thursday at Wilson Beddingfield.

No further information was available on Wednesday's match.

Spring Creek

suffers road loss

AYDEN -- Spring Creek's Lorenda Brogden had four blocks and paced the Gators in kills in a 25-22, 25-7, 19-25, 25-12 loss at Carolina 1-A Conference rival Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

The loss dropped Spring Creek (9-5 overall) to 2-5 in league play.

Tomeka Pride added five blocks for the Gators, while Courtney Oxendine added four aces.

Cross country

Murray, Oakes

lead Greene Central

BETHEL -- Greene Central's Lance Murray and Amber Oakes each claimed individuals honors in an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference cross-country dual meet Wednesday afternoon at North Pitt.

Murray ran the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 58 seconds and paced the Rams' boys to a 19-36 victory. Teammates Tony Tyson and Chris Nethercutt finished second and third, respectively.

North Pitt's Laderick Saulsbury and Will James took fourth and fifth, respectively.

Neither Greene Central nor North Pitt had enough runners to post a team score in the girls' portion of the meet. Oakes finshed the course in 27:08 ahead of teammates Blair Carraway (27:14) and Rachel Patty (30:15).

Ashley Peaden ran for the Panthers.

collects hat trick

AYDEN -- Spring Creek's Leonardo Morrero tallied a natural hat trick (three straight goals) in the second half as the Gators out-scored Ayden-Grifton 8-0 after halftime in an 8-2 win on the road on Wednesday.

Joze Ramirez and Mario Valesquez added two goals each for Spring Creek, while Darwin Aldana notched one goal. Alfonso Carachure and Morrero dished out one assist each for the Gators (3-3-1 overall), who improved to 2-2 in Carolina/Tar-Roanoke 1-A Conference play.

The Chargers (1-10-1, 0-3 C/T-RC) got two goals in the first half from Trey Baggett.

Spring Creek travels to Hobbton in non-conference play next Monday.

unbeaten in ECC

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Garrett Davis had four, first-half goals and had two assists in the second half to help boost the Golden Falcons to a 7-1 win at home over Wilson Beddingfield.

Aycock (8-4 overall) improved to 6-0 in the Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference. The Bruins (9-7-2) fell to 2-4 in the ECC.

Alex Rodriguez added two goals and three assists for the Falcons, while Rich Holder tallied one goal.

Beddingfield scored in the 16th minute of the second half.

Aycock outshot the Bruins 20-8 and held a 6-3 edge in corner kicks.

Jake Bunn and Jared Kennedy combined on eight saves in goal for the Falcons, who traveled to Wilson Fike in non-league play on Thursday.

PIKEVILLE -- Eastern Wayne's Robbie Keys had all four goals for the Warriors in a 4-2 win at county rival Charles B. Aycock on Wednesday afternoon.

Keys scored once in the first half, before notching three goals after intermission. Terry Lee and Glenn Malcolm had one assist each for Eastern Wayne.

Ashley Williams contributed two digs, three kills, one block and two aces.

CALYPSO -- Unbeaten North Duplin clinched a share of the Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season championship with a 25-20, 25-18 victory over Ayden-Grifton on Thursday afternoon.

Heather Hudson and Jessica Pridgen combined for five kills and seven digs.

Vanessa Lynch and Sam Cates each handed out five assists.

North Duplin (12-0, 8-0 CC) continues play next Tuesday at Rosewood.

BETHEL -- Casey Harrison and Telicia Johnson combined for six kills in North Lenoir's come-from-behind 21-25, 25-13, 28-26 victory over North Pitt in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action Thursday afternoon.

Enjoli Mason concluded the three-set affair 15-for-17 on serve. Shanique Thomas was 16-for-19 on serve.

North Lenoir (10-7) evened its EPC worksheet at 4-4.

Middle schools

Norwayne football 26, Rosewood 14 -- Deven Sanders tallied two touchdowns, including a 60-yard kickoff return for the Cobras in Wayne County Middle School Athletic Conference Division I play. Ryan Godwin and Marcus Cobb each added a touchdown, while quarterback David Gurganus passed for 80 yards. Cobb and Brandon Purdie each picked off a Rosewood pass defensively. Godwin, Shephard Whitfield, Antonio Dunston, Brian Smith and Stevie Mitts emerged the top tacklers on defense. Norwayne (2-2, 1-0 Division I) entertains Brogden next Thursday afternoon.

Greenwood volleyball d. Dillard 25-14, 25-21, 26-24 -- Rebecca Moye and Kacie Myers each served four aces for the T-Birds. Natalya Dungee and Taylor Barfield each provided two aces. Greenwood (1-5) entertains Eastern Wayne next Thursday afternoon.

Greenwood football 12, Dillard 6 -- Chris Barfield and Danny Smith ran for first-quarter touchdowns on runs of 4 and 25 yards, respectively. Dillard recovered a fourth-quarter fumble with 10 seconds remaining to avoid the shutout. Greenwood (4-0) travels to Eastern Wayne next Thursday, while Dillard (1-3) plays host to Goldsboro.

Norwayne volleyball d. Rosewood 25-15, 25-13, 23-25, 25-20 -- Megan Wunders, Cara Frederick and Autumn Pittman emerged the top servers for the unbeaten Cobras. Norwayne (7-0) entertains Spring Creek next Monday afternoon.

Goldsboro football 48, Mount Olive 0 -- Matthew Woodard rushed for one touchdown and passed for another score for the Cougars in their WCMSAC Division II game Thursday afternoon. Teonis Cox led Goldsboro's defense with five tackles. The Cougars (3-1, 1-0 Division II) travel to Dillard next Thursday.
