Rosewood earns share of title

KENLY -- Rosewood High clinched at least a share of its first-ever Carolina 1-A Conference regular-season championship with a 25-18, 25-18, 27-25 victory over North Johnston on Tuesday afternoon.

The Eagles, who own a three-game lead in the standings, can claim the title outright with a victory this afternoon at Spring Creek. Rosewood (16-0, 7-0 CC) would secure the league's No. 1 seed in the tournament and in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, which begin Oct. 25.

Middle hitter Courtney Hill led a balanced attack with eight kills, five aces, four blocks and two digs. Kasie Braswell provided seven kills and five aces. Clare Narron contributed seven kills and three digs.

Kasey Grey and Stephanie Rhodes combined for six kills and three blocks.

Abigail Barrow dished out 22 assists.

Lee, Burroughs

KINSTON -- Jazzmine Lee and Kandace Burroughs turned in a balanced offensive performance in Charles B. Aycock's 25-13, 25-22, 25-18 victory over Kinston in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play.

Lee collected seven kills, while Burroughs added five in the straight-set win.

Laura Thigpen served seven aces.

The Golden Falcons (8-4, 4-3 ECC) entertain Wilson Hunt in a key conference game today. Match time is approximately 5:30 p.m.

HALIFAX -- Ashley Clark dished out six assists and provided two kills in Wayne Country Day's 19-25, 19-25, 14-25 loss at Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A foe Halifax Academy.

Ellen Elmore contributed five digs and one kill. Caroline Lewis added three digs and two aces. Bre Radford recorded one ace, one kill and one dig.

Wayne Country Day (7-9, 3-6 CPIC) entertains Greenfield at 3:30 p.m. today.

Greene Central

sweeps Goldsboro

Greene Central handed Goldsboro a 25-9, 25-10, 25-11 loss in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Cougars head coach Markita Raynor cited Shaconda Johnson for her "hustle, teamwork and assists" in the three-set loss.

Goldsboro (0-16, 0-7 EPC) traveled to county rival Eastern Wayne on Wednesday afternoon.

ROCKY MOUNT -- Eastern Wayne prevailed in all three doubles matches at Rocky Mount's Sunset Park as the Warriors rolled to an 8-1 win over the Gryphons on Wednesday.

In doubles, the tandems of Lindsay Frederick-Elizabeth Borden, Emily Northington-Kelsi Yates and Minerva Rodriguez-Meike Meischner emerged with wins.

In singles, Frederick, Borden, Meischner, Rodriguez and Northington claimed victories.

Eastern Wayne returns to action today against Greenfield School.

Saints second

in three-team meet

WILSON -- Allen Bennett emerged Southern Wayne's top runner with an eighth-place time of 21 minutes, 22 seconds in a three-team, Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference meet at Wilson Hunt.

Hunt's Michael Clayton ran the 3.1-mile course in a meet-winning time of 19:04. The Warriors took the top five spots overall en route to their 15-58 decision over the Saints.

Beddingfield finished third with 64 points.

Chase Gardner complemented Bennett with an 11th-place effort of 22:16. Tay Wilder took 19th in 23:45. Will Best (20th, 23:55) and Javaris McMillian (22nd, 24:30) rounded out the Saints' scoring.

Southern Wayne entertains county rival C.B. Aycock and Wilson Hunt for a conference meet next Tuesday at historic Waynesborough Park.

Price, Eagle

girls capture win

Wayne Christian's Jennifer Price turned in a course-record time of 22 minutes, 47 seconds in a four-team meet contested Tuesday afternoon at Wayne Country Day.

Shelle Anderson complemented Price's record-setting effort with a fifth-place showing of 26:11. The Eagles amassed 30 points, compared to 52 for Rocky Mount Academy and 53 for Kerr-Vance.

The host Chargers did not have enough runners to post a team score.

Molly Peacock paced Wayne Country Day with a fourth-place time of 25:02.

RMA's Harrison Gould set a course-record time of 18:23 during the boys' portion of the meet. The Eagles' Doug Johnson finished in 19:10, followed by Kerr-Vance's Matt Ison in 19:23.

Rocky Mount Academy earned the team win 37-40 over Wayne Christian. Kerr-Vance was third with 43. The Chargers did not participate.

Linda Cannon and Novella Zambelli emerged winners in the Mini-Blind Partners tournament, while Brooke Eason won low gross and Pete Reaves took low net. Faye Franklin claimed low putts for the field.

Middle schools

Grantham volleyball d. Spring Creek 25-14, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16 -- Lindsay Mathias, Alex Thames, Chelsea Emery and Taylor Hood paced Grantham (2-4). Spring Creek was led by Randi Oxedine. Grantham travels to Eastern Wayne on Monday.

Rec football

Rosewood Little Eagles 19, Eastern Wayne Wee Warriors 7 -- Justin Cummins and Torey Dixon paced Eastern Wayne's offense, while Dixon and Stephen Dickerson paced the defense. Rosewood improved to 3-1 as the Warriors fell to 1-2. Eastern Wayne will face Grantham at Princeton on Saturday.
