Aycock tennis team wins another championship

Charles B. Aycock blanked Eastern Wayne 9-0 and put the finishing touches on its fifth consecutive Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference regular-season tennis title and 27th overall in program history Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (15-1, 9-0 ECC) clinched the league's No. 1 seed for the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs. Aycock, the 2004 eastern runner-up, plays host to the Coastal Conference runner-up on Oct. 18.

"We came out focused and ready to play," said veteran Aycock coach Luke Vail, whose teams have won 291 consecutive conference matches. "All three doubles teams did a good job of putting the ball away at the net. It was good to win against a quality Eastern Wayne team."

Raychel Batts, Carlyn Claiborne, Nicole Taylor, Laine Purcell, Lizzie Sodoma and Kristen Prosser each produced a straight-set singles victory for Aycock. Neither Sodoma nor Prosser lost a game in their respective matches.

Claiborne-Purcell, Taylor-Sodoma and Batts-Prosser each seized a win in doubles. Claiborne-Purcell and Batts-Prosser each posted a shutout.

Meanwhile, the second-seeded tandem of Taylor-Sodoma handed the Warriors' Lauren Bynum-Casie Musgrave just their second loss in ECC play this season.

"Hopefully, our momentum will carry us through the regular season and into the playoffs," said Vail. "We're starting to play really well as a team."

Aycock entertains Southern Wayne in the regular-season finale for both teams Thursday at 4 p.m. Eastern Wayne (6-3 ECC) is the guest of Kinston the same afternoon.

topples Saints

WILSON -- Southern Wayne picked up wins at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles in a 7-2 loss at Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference foe Wilson Hunt on Tuesday afternoon.

The Saints' second-seeded duo of Tara Hirsch-Emily Taylor outlasted the Warriors' Caroline Nganga-Jenny Brown 8-5. Teammates Whitli Thornton-Leslie Barrow, the No. 3 tandem, escaped Jordan Winslow-Taylor Sharp 9-8 (4).

Hunt swept the singles.

Southern Wayne (8-6, 4-5 ECC) concludes regular-season play at home Thursday against league champion C.B. Aycock.

Mount Olive women

beat Methodist, 5-0

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive defeated Methodist 5-0 in non-conference women's soccer Tuesday at Trojan Field. Lyndsay Brennan scored two early goals and assisted the third to help Mount Olive defeat the Monarchs.

Gina Dos Santos notched her team-leading 13th goal of the season in the 35th minute to give the Trojans a 4-0 lead. Jackie Jimenez finished off the scoring four minutes before halftime with a long distance shot off an assist from Jessica Smoot.

Mount Olive returns to action Wednesday as the Trojans head to Winston-Salem to take on Salem in a non-conference matchup. Match time is 4 p.m. Methodist travels to Christopher Newport Saturday at 5:30 p.m. for a USA South match-up.

Ford stops two

crucial PKs on road

AHOSKIE -- Keeper Ryan Ford squelched two penalty-kick opportunities and Wayne Country Day turned back Ridgecroft 5-0 in their Classes 1-A/2-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference match Tuesday evening.

The visiting Chargers committed a handball infraction inside the penalty area and Ford stopped the penalty kick to keep the Rams off the board. Just five minutes into the second half, Ford fouled a Ridgecroft player while the two battled for a loose ball. Again, Ford denied the PK.

"Those two PKs were crucial for us," said Wayne Country Day coach Michael Taylor. "The score could have easily been 2-2."

Jeff Franklin collected the game-winning goal in the 18th minute on an unassisted shot outside the 18-yard box. Eight minutes later, Will Futrelle tallied a goal on Sam Steed's assist.

WCDS led 2-0 at halftime.

Hyo Won Ha helped account for the Chargers' next two goals. He assisted Cameron Ford in the 50th minute and scored on an assist from Steed in the 65th minute.

Franklin concluded the scoring on Steed's assist in the 74th minute.

Ford finished with eight saves as the Chargers earned their fourth shutout of the season.

Wayne Country Day (10-4-1, 3-2-1 CPIC) entertains Kerr-Vance at 4:45 p.m. Friday.

Warriors drop

Kinston in ECC 3-A

Eastern Wayne's Andrew Corley, Eric Bourgeois and Chris Brown had two goals each as the Warriors claimed a 6-1 win at home over Kinston on Monday.

The victory improved the Warriors (5-4 overall) to 3-2 in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play.

The Warriors, who outshot the Vikings by a 41-2 margin, scored three time in each half -- taking a 6-0 lead before Kinston got on the board late in the game on a goal by Evan Price.

Eastern Wayne had nine corner kicks, while the Vikings had one corner kick.

Kinston dropped to 0-8-1 overall and 0-5 in ECC play.

The Warriors host Southern Wayne on Wednesday.

Volleyball

North Lenoir

rallies past Tarboro

LaGRANGE -- Outside hitter Brittany Sanders delivered a season-high 18 kills in North Lenoir's come-from-behind 25-17, 26-28, 25-27, 25-22, 15-8 victory over Tarboro High in their Eastern Plains 2-A Conference affair Tuesday afternoon.

Catelyn Howard complemented Sanders' performance with 11 kills.

Kayla Sutton and Connor Jordan each provided three kills for the Hawks, who rose to 5-12 overall and 3-4 against EPC opposition.

North Lenoir continues play Thursday at North Pitt.

Princeton, Rebels

stage league thriller

PRINCETON -- Injuries and a family illness might have depleted North Duplin's squad, but the Rebels nearly pulled out yet another five-set win Tuesday afternoon at Carolina 1-A rival Princeton.

The Bulldogs dropped the fourth set, but held on for a 23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 14-25, 15-10 victory.

"We had three players out tonight ... two to injury and one for a death in the family," said Rebels coach Heather Best. "We were short much-needed players, but our girls fought hard to end and really played well."

Senior middle hitter Sierra Ward turned in a double-double (17 kills, 14 digs) to go along with seven blocks for the Rebels, who endured their fourth consecutive conference loss. Julie Ivey and Vanessa Lynch dished out 16 and 12 assists, respectively.

Princeton seized its third consecutive win.

LAGRANGE -- Rosewood's Courtney Hill finished with 11 kills, seven blocks, three aces and two digs in the Eagles' 25-8, 18-25, 25-15, 25-12 win at North Lenoir on Monday in non-conference play.

Kasie Braswell added seven aces and three digs, while Abigail Barrow had 17 assists and two aces. Stephanie Rhodes notched four kills, four aces and three blocks as teammate Clare Narron provided four kills and four digs.

Rosewood improved to 15-0 overall heading into a Class 1-A Carolina Confernence contest at North Johnston on Tuesday. The Eagles are 6-0 in league play.

Chargers a loss

AHOSKIE -- Austin Britton notched the game's lone goal and the Ridgecroft defense pitched a 1-0 shutout over Wayne Country Day in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play Tuesday.

The Chargers played a man down for the match.

Wayne Country Day plays host to Kerr-Vance at 3:30 p.m. Friday.

LAGRANGE -- Rosewood's Ashley Williams had seven kills and two aces in the Eagles' 25-14, 19-25, 25-23 win at North Lenoir on Monday.

The Eagles improved to 4-10 overall heading into a Class 1-A Carolina Conference contest on Tuesday at North Johnston.

Caroline Tart added six kills and three digs for Rosewood, while Paige Babb notched five assists and two digs.

Mason, Harrison

pace Hawks' attack

LaGRANGE -- Enjoli Mason provided seven kills and Casey Harrison added five in North Lenoir's 25-14, 25-20 sweep of visiting Tarboro in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action at Wooten Gymnasium.

Mason and Harrison combined for a 24-for-24 serving effort. Brittany Oliver finished the day 8-for-8 on serve.

North Lenoir (9-7, 3-3 EPC) is the guest of North Pitt on Thursday.

Rebels inch

closer to title

PRINCETON -- Heather Hudson emerged the offensive leader and Erica Lane led the defense in North Duplin's 22-25, 25-9, 25-23 conquest of Princeton on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene Tuesday afternoon.

Hudson collected eight kills and Lane contributed 13 digs for the Rebels -- now unbeaten in 11 matches, including a 7-0 Carolina worksheet.

Kayla Myers and Vanessa Lynch each added three kills. Lynch served four aces. Hudson, Lane and Sam Cates each served two aces.

North Duplin entertains Ayden-Grifton at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

up pair of wins

PIKEVILLE -- C.B. Aycock picked up key victories at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, and doubled up Greene Central 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 2 tandem of Emilee Quinn-Katie Perry cruised past the Rams' Calley Hudson-Grayson Daniell 8-1. The No. 3 duo of Jessica Davis-Margaret Connelly eased past Casey Perry-Tory Whitson 8-3.

Katie Perry, Courtney Barnes, Kara Kelly and Lauren Pierce each claimed a pro-set win in singles.

Aycock nipped Rocky Mount Academy 5-4 on Monday afternoon.

Barnes, Kelly and Kristen Bennett each earned a singles win for the Golden Falcons. Quinn-Perry and Barnes-Mallory Strickland helped secure the victory in doubles.

The Golden Falcons (13-2) travel to Greenfield School this afternoon.

DUDLEY -- Eastern Wayne emerged victorious in two of three doubles matches and stopped archrival Southern Wayne 6-3 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Warriors' top-seeded duo of Lindsey Frederick-Elizabeth Borden dominated the Saints' Loftin-Dove 8-1. The No. 2 tandem of Emily Northington-Sarah Corley doubled up Amberley Martin-Chowthi 8-4.

Frederick, Borden, Northington and Kelsi Yates each won in singles.

April Tucker and Amber Bowden claimed singles wins for Southern Wayne. The No. 3 doubles of Ezell-Jarman edged the Warriors' Hulse-Holland 9-8 (5).
