Mount Olive wins three straight

WHEELING, W. Va. -- Mount Olive won its final three matches to post a 3-1 record at the Wheeling Jesuit Volleyball Tournament over the weekend at Wheeling, W. Va. The Trojans posted three-game victories over Fairmont State and Alderson-Broaddus Saturday after splitting its first two matches of the tournament Friday, falling to California (Pa.) in three games and rallying to defeat tournament host Wheeling Jesuit in four games.

Mount Olive (13-3) has won 12 of its last 13 matches, but had its nine-match winning streak snapped in the 30-25, 30-21, 30-28 loss to California. Heidi Busch tallied 14 kills, while Colby Mangum added 12 kills and Sam Mitchell finished with 11 kills for the Trojans.

After losing game one to Wheeling Jesuit, Mount Olive trailed 8-1 in game two before rallying to lead by as many as three points. The Trojans held on for the game two win and went on to win the match 25-30, 31-29, 30-25, 31-29.

Busch had a match-high 23 kills, while Anna Luft added 15 kills. Mitchell finished with nine kills to end her streak of seven consecutive matches in double figures.

Mount Olive began Saturday's play with a 30-20, 30-17, 30-27 victory over Fairmont State as Luft recorded 17 kills and Mangum added 15 kills to lead the Trojans. Busch finished with 10 kills, while Sara Christie recorded 48 assists and five service aces.

The Trojans capped their trip to West Virginia with a 30-12, 30-13, 30-19 victory over Alderson-Broaddus as Mangum matched a career high with 19 kills and only one error in 20 attempts. Busch added 14 kills and Christie served seven aces.

Busch recorded 61 kills in the four matches to bring her career total to 2,110 kills, moving her into 19th place on the NCAA Division II women's volleyball all-time career kills list. Busch is the only player in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference history to reach the 2,000-kill mark.

Mount Olive is in first place in the CVAC standings with an 8-0 record as the Trojans resume conference play this week. Mount Olive heads to Laurinburg, N.C., Thursday to take on St. Andrews in CVAC action. Match time is 6:30 p.m.
