ROCKY MOUNT -- Trey Shehdan delivered the game-winning goal with one minute left in regulation, completing Faith Christian's come-from-behind 2-1 win over Wayne Country Day on Friday afternoon.

Sam Steed put the Chargers ahead 1-0 just 14 seconds into the contest on Will Futrelle's assist. Steed boosted his team- and area-high total to 19 goals.

The Patriots' Stephen Lamm tallied the equalizer on a controversial goal in the 60th minute. Lamm's goal apparently entered the side of the net behind the post and not in front. Steed and teammate Travis Davis argued the official's decision and each received yellow cards.

The teams played even until Shehdan's mark in the 79th minute.

Wayne Country Day (9-4-1) fell to 2-2-1 in the Classes 1-A/2-A Coastal Plains Independent Conference affair. Faith Christian, the reigning N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A champion, rose to 9-5-1 overall and 2-2-1 in the league.

The Chargers entertain Ridgecroft next Tuesday in another key conference match. The Rams (6-3-1, 3-1-1 CPIC) upset No. 1-ranked Greenfield 1-0 on Friday.

"We've got our work cut out for us," said WCDS coach Michael Taylor. "Anybody in this conference can beat anybody on any given day."

NEW BERN -- Kelli Forbis fired a team-low, 18-hole round of 80 and paced Charles B. Aycock to a 171-173 victory over New Bern at The Emerald course on Thursday afternoon.

Brooke Newell added a 91 for the Golden Falcons. Emily Stewart also participated in the dual meet.

C.B. Aycock entertains Clayton next Wednesday at Lane Tree Golf Course.

Saints capture

MOUNT OLIVE -- Jordan Hill collected a nine-hole total of 49 as Southern Wayne edged Smithfield-Selma 103-107 in non-conference play Thursday afternoon at Southern Wayne Country Club.

Lynn Grantham and Taylor Reaves each carded a 54 for the Saints. Teammate Katie Connelley shot a 56.

Southern Wayne is the guest of Spring Creek next Thursday.

Chargers prevail

in CPIC match

OXFORD -- Erin Taylor and Ashley Clark provided much-needed offensive punch in Wayne Country Day's 25-19, 25-19, 26-24 victory over Oxford in their Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A match Thursday evening.

Taylor delivered a team-high six kills, while Clark dished out 16 assists.

Sammy Schurhammer added three kills and two digs. Caroline Lewis provided two kills.

Stephanie Knutson served a team-high three aces.

The Chargers (8-7, 3-5 CPIC) entertain Halifax next Tuesday afternoon.

Gators' clutches

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Stephanie Daughtry recorded a double-double -- 11 kills, 10 digs -- in Princeton's 25-21, 23-25, 25-13, 22-25, 15-11 conquest of Spring Creek during Carolina 1-A Conference play Thursday afternoon.

Daughtry also served eight aces for the Bulldogs, who seized their second consecutive victory in as many days.

Brittany Davis added a double-double -- 12 assists and 11 digs -- to go along with eight aces.

Cynthia Peedin complemented Daughtry's effort with eight kills and five blocks. Kaitlyn Haddock contributed three kills, two blocks, four aces and nine digs.

Kortnie Yutzy paced the Bulldog defense with 12 digs.

"Kortnie did a great job of getting under some hard spikes and getting the ball up," said Princeton coach Trudy Rast. "Our team did a great job of covering the court. Everyone on the court was giving it their all and it paid off."

Tomeka Pride emerged the Gators' leader with 13 kills and seven blocks. Brittani Billups chipped in eight kills and four aces.

Courtney Oxendine and Lorenda Brogden combined for six aces.

Spring Creek (9-4, 2-4 CC) is the guest of Ayden-Grifton next Tuesday. Princeton (6-5, 3-3) entertains North Duplin, which has lost three consecutive league matches.

Rosewood keeps

perfect record

Courtney Hill and Kasie Braswell each turned in a seven-kill effort as unbeaten Rosewood swept Ayden-Grifton 25-15, 25-22, 25-15 in Carolina 1-A Conference action Thursday.

The Eagles remained unbeaten in 14 outings, including a 6-0 league worksheet. They've lost just 42 of 43 sets overall.

Hill concluded the three-set outing with two blocks, two assists, six digs and two aces. Braswell chipped in four digs and one ace. Teammates Kasey Grey added five kills, while Clare Narron registered four kills and six digs.

Abigail Barrow handed out 16 assists.

"We did a great job coming back in the second game," said Rosewood coach Jennifer Cochran. "We were down and we never gave up. It was great to see."

Rosewood entertains North Lenoir at 5 p.m. Monday.

Cougars battle

in EPC road loss

TARBORO -- Helga Bryant and Tiffany Burden each played an all-around solid game in Goldsboro's 17-25, 13-25, 19-25 loss at Tarboro in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play Thursday.

Cougar coach Marquita Raynor cited Bryant for serving and blocking. Burden drew praise for assists and spikes.

Goldsboro (0-15, 0-6 EPC) entertains Greene Central next Tuesday afternoon.

Paige Babb dished out three assists for the Eagles, who claimed their first Carolina Conference win in six tries.

Warriors remain

in playoff chase

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne remained in contention for a dual-team playoff berth with a 7-2 thrashing of Wilson Beddingfield in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action Thursday afternoon.

The Warriors (8-4, 6-2 ECC) prevailed in five of six singles matches.

Ashley Smith, Brandi Butts, Casie Musgrave, Mollie Musgrave and Nicole Fine each took a straight-set singles win.

Lauren Bynum-Casie Musgrave and Mollie Musgrave-Sami Abrahamson each won in doubles.

Eastern Wayne entertains county rival C.B. Aycock next Tuesday afternoon. Match time is 4 p.m. at the Wayne Community College courts.

Eagles creep

TEACHEY -- Rosewood crept closer to the Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference regular-season title with back-to-back, 8-1 victories against Wallace-Rose Hill.

The Eagles (10-1) remained unbeaten in nine league outings and need just one win in Tuesday's doubleheader at North Duplin to clinch the championship outright. A victory also assures Rosewood of gaining the league's lone spot in the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs, which begin Oct. 18.

Kayce Brantham, Sidney Worrell, Missy Bailey, Erica Nichols and Jamie Andrews each won two singles matches.

Brantham-Worrell, Bailey-Nichols and Andrews-Beasley each captured two doubles victories.

Rosewood's match with North Duplin is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center on the campus of Mount Olive College. The teams will complete a suspended match and then play their regularly-scheduled match.

MOUNT OLIVE -- The No. 3 tandem of Kristen Jones-Sarah Jackson emerged the lone victors in North Duplin's 8-1 loss against James Kenan in their Carolina/Super Six 1-A Conference match.

Jones-Jackson defeated the Tigers' Jessie Smith-Brittany Mathis 8-3.

Kenan received straight-set singles wins from Christa Jones, Erica Brown, Megan Sanderlin, Lorry Chestnutt, Smith and Mathis.

The Tigers also handed the Rebels a 9-0 loss. The same group won pro-set (eight-game) singles matches.

BETHEL -- Despite missing two starters due to sickness, North Lenoir regrouped and defeated North Pitt 8-1 in an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference match.

Top-seeded Rachel Harris and sixth-seeded Lauren Harris did not make the trip.

"The girls really played well," said second-year Hawks coach Courtney Harrell. "Ashley (Fillipelli) had another tough three-set match, and couldn't quite pull it out. With the win today, I feel like we have improved this year."

Fillipelli, who moved up to No. 3, lost 6-3, 3-6, 5-7 to the Panthers' Kornisha Dudley.

Ruthanne Hardy, Heather Phillips, Haley Bright, Kristen Penuel and Madison Gray each won a singles match. Gray outlasted the Panthers' Shannon Andrews 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.

Jonathan Midgette recorded five tackles, two sacks and returned a fumble 50 yards for a touchdown. Offensive leaders were Will White (two TDs), Linwood Grantham (two TDs), Jakar Kelly (TD) and Ricky Bell with a 60-yard kickoff return. Eastern Wayne (4-0) begins Division I play next Thursday at Brogden.

Brogden football 42, Grantham 0 -- Jabari Dos Santos collected three touchdowns, while Lorenzo Alford and J.D. Loftin each scored one TD. Steven Stanley led the Ram defense with eight solo tackles. Jamal Broadie added six, while Duron Smith contributed three and intercepted a pass. Brogden forced eight turnovers defensively. The Rams (3-0) entertain Eastern Wayne next Thursday.

Eastern Wayne soccer 9, Mount Olive 1 -- Leslie Cox notched the hat trick-plus-one (four goals), while Eric Suncin added a hat trick (three goals) and two assists. Nicholas Bowden and Sang Kim each notched one goal. Benny Segura punched in Mount Olive's lone goal off Jonathan Gonzalez's assist. Eastern Wayne (4-0-1) plays host to Brogden next Thursday.
