How sweet it is for Warriors

WILSON -- Sweet revenge!

Eastern Wayne prevailed at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles and nipped Wilson Hunt 5-4 in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference action Tuesday afternoon. The Warriors avenged a five-point loss less than two weeks ago and climbed back into the race for one of the league's two N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoff berths.

Tied at 3-3 after singles play, Eastern Wayne's No. 2 tandem of Lauren Bynum-Casie Musgrave dominated Hunt's Madison Cauley-Mary Catherine Hardison 8-1. Bynum-Musgrave claimed their sixth doubles victory in seven ECC outings.

The third-seeded duo of Mollie Musgrave-Sami Abrahamson beat Rainey Wallace-Taylor Sharp by the same score. That boosted Eastern Wayne to 5-2 in the ECC heading into Thursday afternoon's league battle at Wilson Beddingfield.

Ashley Smith, Brandi Butts and Casie Musgrave each collected a singles win. Smith rallied from an opening-set loss to turn back Anna Strader 3-6, 6-4, 7-4. Butts raced to a 5-0 lead in the second set in a 7-5, 6-1 win over Rainey Wallace. Musgrave split sets before stopping Cauley 6-1, 4-6, 7-4.

"I am really tickled over the three singles wins," said Eastern Wayne coach Nancy Dawson, whose team improved to 7-4 overall. "Ashley struggled and for her to pull that win out, that was really good. Brandi ... for her to play that good in singles was awesome.

"Casie, that was one of the best wins I've seen for her. It was really good ... more than I could stand."

Andrea Michalak, Katie Wilson and Jordan Winslow each earned a singles win for Hunt. Winslow claimed an opening-set tiebreaker against Nicole Fine and cruised 7-6 (5), 6-1.

dominate Kinston

KINSTON -- Charles B. Aycock, the four-time defending Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference champion, lost just three games in a 9-0 decision against Kinston at Bill Fay Park on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons (13-1) remained unbeaten in seven ECC contests heading into this afternoon's non-conference match at Wilson Fike.

"It was a total team victory," said Golden Falcons coach Luke Vail. "Nicole Taylor and Lizzie Sodoma played very well at number one doubles."

Taylor-Sodoma blitzed the Vikings' Jesse Anderson-Sarah Culbreth 8-0 -- one of six shutouts Aycock posted on the afternoon.

The Golden Falcon's No. 3 tandem of Carlyn Claiborne-Laine Purcell stopped Carrie Jo Oglesby-Blake Romaigna 8-0. The No. 2 doubles of Raychel Batts-Kristen Prosser cruised past Madison Kearney-Aylissa Tilghman 8-1.

Batts, Claiborne, Taylor, Purcell, Sodoma and Prosser each won in singles.

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central remained unbeaten in seven Eastern Plains 2-A Conference contests with a 9-0 decision over North Lenoir at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

Meredith Rouse, Christi Murphy, Ashley Harrell, Michelle Jernigan, Brittany Horton and Elizabeth Cooper each collected a straight-set win. Rouse, Harrell and Horton each posted a shutout.

Harrell and Murphy are tied for the team lead in singles wins (14).

"Ashley played some great tennis for us today," said Greene Central coach Donald Clark. "She has worked very hard at practice over the last week on her ground strokes, and she was really hitting the ball with a lot of confidence today."

Rouse-Horton, Murphy-Harrell and Jernigan-Cooper each prevailed in doubles. Rouse-Horton and Murphy-Harrell stayed perfect at 10-0, while Cooper-Jernigan climbed to 13-1.

"Meredith and Brittany were outstanding in doubles today," said Clark. "I was pleased with their movement to the net and sideways at the net. They are really starting to jell as a team."

Greene Central (15-1) entertains Wilson Hunt this afternoon.

PIKEVILLE -- Rocky Mount Academy triumphed in five of six singles matches and handed C.B. Aycock a 5-3 loss Tuesday afternoon.

Courtney Barnes emerged the Golden Falcons' lone singles winner.

The No. 1 tandem of Kristen Bennett-Kara Kelly and No. 3 duo of Emilee Quinn-Lauren Pierce each picked up a win.

off Rocky Mount

Eastern Wayne dominated singles play and earned two doubles wins in an 8-1 victory over Rocky Mount Senior High on Tuesday afternoon in New Hope.

Lindsey Frederick, Elizabeth Borden, Sarah Corley, Kelsi Yates, Emily Northington and Meike Meischner each grabbed a singles win. Yates survived 9-7 against the Gryphons' Anna Chamblis.

Frederick and Northington each collected a shutout in pro-set (eight games) play.

Frederick-Borden and Northington-Yates each won in doubles.

Saints seize

first win of year

KINSTON -- Mario Segura tallied a pair of goals in Southern Wayne's 2-1 victory over Kinston in their Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match Monday evening.

The Saints claimed their first win in five outings and exited 1-2 against ECC opposition. They continue play at home today against Wilson Hunt. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

Segura broke a scoreless tie in the opening half on an assist from Jorge Cortes. Segura notched the game-winning goal in the second half.

Kinston's Wood Oglesby converted a penalty kick.

Saints keeper Casey Best recorded nine saves.

"It was a great team effort," said Southern Wayne coach Michael Wiggs. "Everybody played their positions well. The offense and defense was evenly balanced."

Bourgeois scores

twice for E. Wayne

Eastern Wayne's Eric Bourgeois posted two goals as the Warriors defeated Wilson Beddingfield 4-1 at home on Monday.

Andrew Corley and Jin Lee added one goal each for Eastern Wayne, while Adam Corley dished out an assist.

The Warriors outshot the Bruins 24-6 on the match.

Eastern Wayne (4-3, 2-1 ECC) is the guest of county rival C.B. Aycock today. Game time is 7 p.m. at Hardy Talton Stadium in Pikeville.

Gators drop

league opener

LOUISBURG -- Spring Creek's Jose Ramirez tied the game at 3-3 at the 70-minute mark, before Louisburg scored three unanswered goals in the late stages to claim a 6-3 win over the Gators at home on Monday.

It was the Carolina/Tar-Roanoke 1-A opener for both teams.

Darwin Aldana and Geraldo Brovo added one goal each for Spring Creek (1-2-1, 0-1 C/TRC), which faces North Johnston in Seven Springs today.

Louisburg improved to 4-2-1 overall.

Chargers claim

non-league victory

Wayne Country Day's Cameron Ford had two goals as the Chargers defeated Rocky Mount Prep 6-2 at home Monday afternoon.

Brandon Davis, E.J. York, Tanner Pate and Kobe Hood added one goal each for WCDS.

On Tuesday, Davis scored the Chargers' lone goal in a 3-1 loss at home to Rocky Mount Academy.

WCDS fell to 2-4 overall.

Goldsboro suffers

EPC 2-A road loss

BETHEL -- Jes'neka Jones and Tiffany Burden turned in solid performances in Goldsboro's 25-15, 25-15, 25-12 loss Tuesday afternoon at Eastern Plains 2-A foe North Pitt.

First-year Cougar coach Markita Raynor said Jones served well, while Burden emerged the team's leader at the net in spikes.

Goldsboro (0-14, 0-5 EPC) travels to Tarboro High on Thursday afternoon.

Croom, Baker

lead Princeton

Princeton's Heather Braswell seized first-place honors, while Philip Croom finished third among the boys in a Carolina 1-A Conference meet against Farmville Central on Monday afternoon.

Braswell led a 1-2-3 finish with a meet-winning time of 24 minutes, 4 seconds on the 3.1-mile course. Courtney Yancey (25:00) and Maegan Hewitt (25:04), respectively, followed Braswell across the finish line.

Olivia Booker ended up fifth in 25:20 in the Bulldogs' 21-34 win.

Croom and teammate Chris Hinton each recorded a top-five time in Princeton's 22-37 setback. Croom ran the course in 20:42, while Hinton was next at 21:04.

Princeton returns to action this afternoon in a Carolina meet at Cliffs of the Neuse State Park in Seven Springs.
