Conquerors win in three

Faith Christian's Elizabeth Clarke, Summer Honeycutt and Natalie Thibeaux finished with three kills each as the Conquerors turned in a solid, all-around team effort in a 25-20, 25-17, 25-8 win at home over Trinity of Greenville on Monday.

Faith (2-9 overall) improved to 1-4 in North Carolina Christian Schools Association 2-A play heading into a rematch with Trinity on Oct. 3 in Greenville.

Kaitlyn Floars finished with two kills and one block in Monday's win.

On Friday, Faith fell to Liberty of Fayetteville 20-25, 25-10, 25-23, 25-21. Clarke, Alyssa Hill and Kristen Maddox paced the Conquerors on Friday.

WCDS sweeps

Goldsboro

Wayne Country Day defeated Goldsboro 25-20, 25-15, 25-22 on Monday at the Cougar Den.

Goldsboro coach Marquita Raynor praised the effort of Shaconda Johnson, Helga Bryant and Tiffany Burden.

The Cougars (0-13) travel to North Pitt today.

Mount Olive in

St. Andrews tourney

Brandon Barfield shot a career-best 72 to place second out of 33 golfers and lead Mount Olive to second place after the first round of the St. Andrews Men's Golf Fall Invitational at Wagaram, N.C. Mount Olive shot a 299, its lowest single-round score of the season, to come within one stroke of first-round leader St. Andrews in the six-team tournament.

Barfield, a sophomore from Bryceville, Fla., shot 36 on both the front and back nine to finish at even par. Chris Bitzenhofer is tied for fourth with a 37-37--74, while Jonathan Greene is tied for sixth at 39-37--76. Will Williams (37-40--77) is tied for ninth and Mick Moberg (43-39--82) is 21st.

* Kate Somek is tied for fifth out of 29 golfers and Lindsey Snyder is tied for eighth as Mount Olive ended Monday's first round in third place at the St. Andrews Women's Golf Fall Invitational at Wagaram, N.C. Mount Olive shot a 357 to place behind first-round co-leaders Limestone and USC-Upstate in the six-team tournament.

Somek shot a 44-41--85, while Eastern Wayne graduate Lindsey Snyder shot a 43-43--86. Deborah Woodrum is tied for 12th at 44-44-88, Eastern Wayne grad Kristen Freeman is tied for 23rd with a 48-50--98 and Brianna Whatley is 29th at 63-54--117.

The second round of the two-round tournament concludes today.

Cross country

Eagles run in five-team meet

FAYETTEVILLE -- Wayne Christian's Doug Johnson finished sixth overall in a five-team meet on Monday at Fayetteville Christian.

In the girls meet, Jennifer Price (24:38) and Bianca Wall (25:15) took ninth and 12th overall, respectively.

Wayne Christian finished fourth in the boys meet, while the Eagle girls claimed fifth.

Wayne Christian hosts Goldsboro on Thursday at 4 p.m.

EW runners race at Lake Kristi

GREENVILLE -- Eastern Wayne's Michael Lawrence took sixth overall in the McCalister's Invitational at Lake Kristi on Saturday.

The Warrior boys finished 12th overall in the 3-A/4-A division and were the fourth-best 3-A team. Joey Burridge (20:05) and Steven Hendricks (20:27) both finished in the top 100 for the Warriors.

In the girls race, Eastern Wayne took 11th overall in 3-A/4-A and were also the fourth-best 3-A squad. Helen Baddour was 24th overall with a 23:08 as Natalie Taylor took 28th with a 23:23. Lydia Hirschy claimed 40th with a 23:48.

The Warriors travel to Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday in a three-team, Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference meet.

Soccer

Faith blanks Trinity-Greenville

Faith Christian's Charlie Sugg finished with a hat-trick (three goals) as the Conquerors claimed an 8-0 win at home over Trinity Christian of Greenville on Monday.

The win improves Faith (5-3 overall) to 2-2 in North Carolina Christian Schools Athletic Association 2-A play, heading into an Oct. 3 rematch at Trinity.

Stephen Marshal added two goals and one assist for the Conquerors, while Freddy Ignot and Jason Bone had one goal each. Jonathan McNeese, Aaron Sladick and Seth Denlinger dished out one assist apiece.

On Friday, Faith handed Liberty Christian of Fayetteville a 4-0 setback at home as Bone, Ignot, Aaron Sladick and David Sladick posted one goal each for the Conquerors. Aaron Sladick, Ignot and Bone had assists. John Zeigler had 12 saves in goal for Faith.

Hawks pound Farmville Central

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir's Alex McGaughy tallied a career-best five goals and dished out three assists to help boost the Hawks to a 12-1 win over Farmville Central in the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference opener for both teams.

C.C. Croom notched two goals and two assists for the Hawks (5-5, 1-0 EPC), while Tyler Smith, Israel Huerta, Brian Smith, Daniel Mooring and Cameron Beaman had one goal each. Smith added two assists as Huerta dished out one.

North Lenoir travels to Tarboro on Wednesday.

JV tennis

GC sweeps Warriors

Greene Central defeated Eastern Wayne 9-0 on Monday at Eastern Wayne High School.

In singles, Sarah Beth Carraway, Dana Spivey, Ashley Grant, Cally Hudson, Grayson Daniell and Casey Perry emerged for the Rams. The combinations of Carraway-Spivey, Grant-Daniell and Hudson-Perry helped Greene Central finish off the sweep.

The Warriors take on Rocky Mount today.

Rebecca Moye, Aunia King, Kacie Myers, Mary Wood and Natalya Dungee paced Greenwood (0-3). Greenwood will host Spring Creek on Thursday, while Grantham travels to Brogden.

Norwayne volleyball d. Mount Olive 25-9, 25-18, 25-22 -- Ashley Shingleton, Victoria Benton and Kara Frederick led Norwayne (4-0) from the service line. The Cobras host Wayne Christian at home today.

Rosewood volleyball d. Dillard 25-13, 25-11, 25-17 -- Rebecca Fail, Taylor Johnson, Karen Babb and Hannah Giddons helped boost Rosewood (3-1). The Eagles travel to Grantham on Oct. 3.

Brogden volleyball d. Dillard -- Brogden's Nikea Randolph, Stephani Rockwell and Destiny Core paced the Rams (3-0). Brogden hosts Grantham on Thursday.

Norwayne soccer 11, Mount Olive 1 -- Tyler Ruffin contributed four goals, while David Burke, William Tamura, Thomas Podbesek, Travis Mussleman, Austin Terrell, Ryan Bunn and Jessica Price added one goal each. Norwayne (2-0-1) travels to Rosewood on Oct. 6.
