Winless, scoreless streak ends for MOC women

MOUNT OLIVE -- The Mount Olive women's soccer team entered Wednesday's contest on a two-match losing streak and a two-match scoreless streak. The Trojans put an end to both streaks.

Lyndsay Brennan's goal in the 24th minute broke a scoreless tie and freshman goalkeeper Heather Ulep recorded her first collegiate shutout as Mount Olive defeated Pfeiffer 3-0 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference women's soccer Wednesday at Trojan Field.

Mount Olive (5-4-0 overall, 2-1-0 CVAC) was held to two shots in the first half, but the Trojans got on the scoreboard on their second shot when April Jacobs served a corner kick to Jackie Jimenez, who found Brennan open in the box.

Pfeiffer (5-3-0, 3-1-0) narrowly missed scoring the first goal of the match on a 20-yard shot by Maria Reis, but the ball glanced off Ulep's fingertips off the crossbar. The Trojans went into halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Pfeiffer had a chance to tie the match in the 53rd minute on Laura Crews shot from just in front of the goal, but Ulep dove to block the ball out of bounds.

"I'm the last line of defense," said Ulep. "I just sacrificed my body to keep the ball out of the goal."

Mount Olive extended the lead to 2-0 four minutes later when CVAC goal-scoring leader Gina Dos Santos scored her ninth goal of the season off a double assist by Jacobs and Erynn Marino. Emily Escolas closed out the scoring with a goal at the 88:03 mark.

Ulep finished with six saves, while Jennifer Lindow recorded three saves for Pfeiffer, which outshot Mount Olive 9-8.

Wednesday's contest was a rematch of last year's CVAC Tournament semifinal, won by Mount Olive 2-0. Pfeiffer entered Wednesday's match ranked No. 10 in the Southeast Region. The win was the Trojans' first-ever against a regionally-ranked team.

After the Trojans were held to a total of four goals in their last four matches, junior Molly Morrow says Wednesday's win may be the morale booster the team needed.

"Pfeiffer is one of the top teams in the conference, so this was a huge win," said Morrow. "Today, we showed how well we can play when we show up."

"We've been on kind of a down slope," said Ulep. "I feel like we really bonded as a team today."

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans travel to Hartsville, S.C., to face Coker in CVAC action. Match time is 1 p.m.
