State-ranked Chargers dismantle Flora MacDonald

Five players each collected two goals as state-ranked Wayne Country Day throttled Flora MacDonald Academy 13-0 in non-conference play Wednesday afternoon.

David Wilson, Will Futrelle, Sam Steed, Hyo Won Ha and Travis Davis each punched in two goals for the Chargers. Teammates E.J. York, Ryan Ford and Jay Weaver each scored one.

Ford, Wilson and Davis each spent time in goal and combined for Wayne Country Day's third shutout of the season.

The Chargers, ranked No. 3 in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Class 1-A poll, improved to 8-2-1 overall. They'll carry a 1-0-1 CPIC worksheet into Friday's contest at Greenfield, which is ranked No. 1 in the NCISAA poll and among the top 10 in the N.C. Soccer Coaches Association poll.

Mendez brothers

spark Rams at home

SNOW HILL -- Brothers Alex and Jonathan Mendez each notched a goal in the first two minutes of play as Greene Central cruised past Rosewood 7-2 at the James R. Fulghum Athletic Complex on Wednesday evening.

Alex finished with the hat trick-plus-one (four goals) off two assists from Jonathan. Ivan Fernandez converted a second-half penalty kick and Gustavo Herrerea contributed an unassisted goal.

Rosewood (2-5) closed the gap to 2-1 at halftime on Goss Kendall's PK.

Cameron Lowe tied the game at 2-2 in the 51st minute, but the Rams erupted for five unanswered goals.

"We worked hard to tie the game," said Eagle coach Daniel Mitchell. "We're not playing very good soccer and we're letting teams do what they want to do."

Edgar Villesenar recorded six saves in goal for Greene Central. Eagle goalie Trevor Morris collected five saves.

Each team begins conference play next Monday.

The Eagles welcome Ayden-Grifton to Branch Pope Field in a Carolina 1-A Conference encounter. Greene Central (5-1-1) kicks off its Eastern Plains 2-A campaign at North Pitt.

Hunt dumps

Warriors in ECC 3-A

Chris Dewald scored a breakaway goal in the 66th minute as Wilson Hunt turned back Eastern Wayne 3-2 in an Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference match at Little Big Horn.

Jerimy Lucas passed the ball to Dewald, who notched the game-winning mark and lifted Hunt (9-3) to 2-0 in conference play.

Jason Lucas notched the visiting Warriors' first goal in the 14th minute off Michael Clayton's assist. Lucas' second goal forged a 2-2 tie.

Eastern Wayne (3-3-2, 1-1) did not provide scoring details.

Golden Falcons

sink Vikings

PIKEVILLE -- Alex Rodriguez set the tempo with a goal in the first two minutes and Charles B. Aycock dominated Kinston 6-1 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Carson Sasser assisted Rodriguez and added a second-half goal for the Golden Falcons, who remained unbeaten in two ECC outings. Aycock (4-4) continues play Monday at Wilson Hunt.

Danny Durowitz gave the Golden Falcons a 2-0 lead before Kinston trimmed the deficit in half at the 30-minute mark.

Less than 30 seconds into the second half, Delgado punched in a goal off Taylor Beamon's assist. That started a four-goal outburst which included marks from Jeffrey Bennett outside the 18-yard box, Garrett Davis (30th minute) and Sasser's game-ending score.

Aycock owned an 18-4 edge in shots on goal.

Keepers Jake Bunn and Gerald Kennedy combined for three saves.

"Overall, the whole team played really well," said Aycock coach Kevin Adkins.

Bruins blank

Saints at home

WILSON -- Brothers Osiel and Omar Guerra accounted for Wilson Beddingfield's offense in a 2-0 shutout of Southern Wayne in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action Wednesday evening.

Osiel broke a scoreless halftime tie with a goal two minutes into the second half off Omar's assist. Omar concluded the Bruins' scoring five minutes later off an assist from Jose Aguilera.

Beddingfield improved to 6-4-1 overall and 1-1 in the ECC.

Casey Best recorded 11 saves for the Saints, who dropped to 0-4 overall and 0-2 in conference play.

McGaughy, Hawks

soar past Gators

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Alex McGaughy notched a hat trick (three goals) as North Lenoir knocked off previously-unbeaten Spring Creek 5-2 on Wednesday evening.

McGaughy scored in the 24th, 47th and 78th minute for the Hawks.

Israel Huerta added two goals.

Chris Cohrs and Rikki Best each tallied goals for the Gators. Diego Rivera assisted Best.

Spring Creek outshot North Lenoir 10-8.

The Gators (1-1-1) begin Carolina 1-A Conference play next Monday at Louisburg. Meanwhile, North Lenoir (4-5-1) opens defense of its Eastern Plains 2-A title at home against league newcomer Farmville Central.

Baker leads NJHS;

Walters takes meet

North Johnston's Elizabeth Baker and Spring Creek's Eric Walters emerged victorious in a first Carolina 1-A Conference meet contested Wednesday afternoon at Rosewood.

Baker ran the 3.1-mile course in 21 minutes, 56 seconds, but the Panthers managed a second-place finish behind county archrival Princeton. Heather Braswell paced the Bulldogs with a runner-up time of 22:03 and three teammates crossed the finish line behind her -- Courtney Yancey, Olivia Booker and Maegan Hewett.

Britney Stewart's 14th-place time of 27:28 helped the Bulldogs seal a 27-31 win.

Stephanie Behrend emerged Rosewood's top runner with a 11th-place time of 26:37. Spring Creek's Janet Potter ended up 13th in 27:07.

Walters dominated the boys' portion of the meet with a first-place effort of 19:15. Princeton's Philip Croom claimed second in 19:40 and the Panthers' Matthew Peedin took third in 20 minutes.

Spring Creeks' Alex Casey, Pat Wilkens and Daniel Correll rounded out the top six.

The Gators emerged the top boys' team with 26 points, compared to 56 for North Johnston. Princeton seized third with 67 points, followed by North Duplin with 76.

Michael Mathis led North Duplin with an eighth-place time of 20:34. Brandon Bryant paced Rosewood, which didn't have enough runners to post a team score, with a 15th-place effort of 22:24. Teammate Daniel Sass finished 21st in 24:47.

Irby, Tyson lead

teams in EPC meet

SNOW HILL -- Goldsboro's Danielle Irby and Greene Central's Tony Tyson emerged individual winners in an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference meet contested Wednesday afternoon at Greene Central.

The Cougars' Irby finished the 3.1-mile course in 25 minutes, 56 seconds. Teammate Angel Roberts was fourth in 31:38. Ashley Thompson and Erin Coleman recorded times of 32:31 and 34:23, respectively, for Goldsboro.

Blair Carraway emerged Greene Central's top runner with a second-place time of 27:02.

Led by Tyson's meet-winning time of 19:30, the Rams captured the top five spots for the boys. Lance Murray took second, followed by Cameron Taylor, Andrew Jarman and Chris Nethercutt.

Goldsboro's Donald Irby was sixth in 23:17. Teammates Rashaad Evans and Dashon Daniel recorded times of 29:12 and 37:20, respectively.

Warriors girls prevail

Six Charles B. Aycock runners finished among the top seven in a three-team, non-conference meet contested Tuesday afternoon at Eastern Wayne.

The Golden Falcons' Dalton Denning claimed runner-up honors with a time of 19 minutes, 33 seconds on the 3.1-mile course. Doug Johnson ended up third in 20 minutes with Daniel Pennington 18 seconds behind him in fourth.

Following that trio to the line were Alan Toler, Trey Benton and Jesse Fryt.

The strong finish at the top translated to a 24-46 victory over the host Warriors. Wayne Christian, of the independent schools ranks, claimed third with 70 points.

Eastern Wayne senior Joey Burridge claimed top individual honors with a meet-winning time of 19:16. Teammate Steven Hendricks ended up the next-highest finisher with an eighth-place time of 21:13.

The Warriors' Helen Baddour captured first place in 23:01 en route to a 25-44 decision against Aycock. Wayne Christian, led by Jessica Price's third-place finish overall, took third with 61 points.

Rebekka Katko led the Golden Falcons with a second-place time of 23:49. Teammates Danielle Sealey and Jasmine Dobbins claimed ninth and 10th, respectively.

Lyddia Hirschy and Natalie Taylor supported Baddour with fourth- and fifth-place finishes, respectively. Ashleigh Deal and Carol Reinier concluded the Warriors' scoring.

Saints capture

MOUNT OLIVE -- Southern Wayne captured five of six singles matches and turned back Spring Creek 7-1 in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon at the John Neal Walker Tennis Center on the Mount Olive College campus.

Tara Hirsch, Kasey Powell, Katlyn Thornton, Whitli Thornton and Leslie Barrow each claimed a pro-set win for the Saints. Hirsch-Barrow and Whitli Thornton-Tara Tillman each prevailed in doubles.

Top-seeded Stacy Smith claimed the Gators' lone singles win.

Southern Wayne (5-4) faces archrival Eastern Wayne at Wayne Community College this afternoon.

Rosewood remained unbeaten in six Carolina 1-A Conference matches with a 7-1 victory against James Kenan on Wednesday afternoon.

Kayce Brantham, the reigning Carolina Conference singles champion, turned back the Tigers' Christa Jones 6-2, 6-0. Sidney Worrell, Erica Nichols and Jamie Andrews each collected a straight-set singles win.

Missy Bailey dropped the second set against Megan Sanderlin, but rebounded for a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 win.

Brantham-Worrell and Bailey-Nichols each prevailed in doubles.

Jillian Casey emerged the Tigers' lone singles winner.

Rosewood (7-1, 6-0 CC) travels to Ayden-Grifton next Tuesday.

C.B. Aycock rebounded from its first loss of the year and dominated county rival Eastern Wayne 9-0 on Wednesday afternoon in New Hope.

Emilee Quinn, Kristen Bennett, Kara Kelly, Courtney Barnes, Mallory Strickland and Lauren Pierce each grabbed a pro-set win for the Golden Falcons.

Bennett-Kelly, Barnes-Strickland and Quinn-Pierce each triumphed in doubles.

Class 2-A power Greene Central took five of six singles wins and handed the Golden Falcons a 6-3 setback on Tuesday afternoon. The Rams got singles wins from Sara Carraway, Dana Spivey, Cally Hudson, Grayson Daniell and Casey Perry.

Aycock's lone singles victory came from Kara Kelly at No. 3

In doubles, the Golden Falcons' No. 1 team of Kristen Bennett-Kara Kelly and No. 3 team of Emilee Quinn-Lauren Pierce helped the Falcons take two-of-three in doubles.

Panthers in five

CALYPSO -- Seirra Ward provided 15 kills and seven blocks as North Duplin stopped North Johnston 18-25, 28-26, 25-7, 20-25, 15-12 in Carolina 1-A Conference volleyball action Wednesday afternoon.

The Rebels (6-1) remained unbeaten in three league outings heading into today's home match against league co-leader Rosewood. The junior varsity game starts at 4:30 p.m.

"(An) awesome game," said Rebels coach Heather Best. "Defensively, we had to step up to stop their net game, which was really strong. Our defense did their job in digs and really pulled through. We started out slow but pulled together, regrouped and wanted this match."

Casey Pate, Brittany Carr and Ward combined for 19 digs defensively.

Heather Hudson provided six kills, three digs and three blocks.

Julie Ivey served three aces.

Ashley Clark turned in a solid floor game as Wayne Country Day endured a 25-15, 25-18, 25-10 non-conference loss against Flora MacDonald Academy on Wednesday afternoon.

Clark provided two aces, two kills and seven digs. Sammy Schurhammer added one ace and one kill. Kayla Flanagan served two aces, while Stephanie Sykes contributed two kills and two digs.

The Chargers (4-7) travel to Goldsboro next Monday afternoon.

PIKEVILLE -- Bridgette Briggs collected seven kills in C.B. Aycock's 25-16, 25-10 victory against county rival Eastern Wayne in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Wednesday afternoon.

Aycock (7-1, 2-1 ECC) entertains Southern Wayne next Tuesday.

CALYPSO -- North Duplin's players served 15 aces in a 25-17, 25-13 victory over Carolina 1-A Conference opponent North Johnston on Thursday afternoon.

Vanessa Lynch notched five aces and one kill. Erica Lane added four aces, while Jessica Pridgen contributed two aces and three kills.

Kayla Myers played well with two aces, three blocks, five digs and one kill.

North Duplin (7-0) remained unbeaten in three Carolina Conference matches.

Gators emerge

with non-league win

Paula Webber claimed medalist honors with an 18-hole round of 93 in Spring Creek's 198-213 non-conference win against Eastern Wayne at Walnut Creek Country Club.

Jenell Archer added a 105 for the Gators.

Melissa Ricker paced the Warriors with a 106. Teammate Heather Raczkowski added a 107.

9-10 year-olds

Rosewood 32, Princeton 19 -- Dee Mabry had three touchdowns, while Tevin Hines and Kaleb Fraser had one touchdown each. Andrew Henn, Garner Beasley, Jacob Sasser and Jacob Guthrie led Rosewood's defense.

Rosewood 26, Mount Olive 6 -- Mabry finished with two touchdowns, while Hines and Fraser tallied one score. Henn, Dillon Hinnant and Zach Yates paced Rosewood defensively.

11-12-year-olds

Princeton 34, Grantham 13 -- Jeremy Carmichael rushed for 261 yards and four touchdowns, and returned a kickoff for another touchdown. Rusty Wallace had four tackles, including three sacks. Kyle Pilkington recorded five tackles and two sacks to lead the defense. Princeton improved to 2-0.
