Trojans looking for some revenge

The nationally 13th-ranked Mount Olive men's soccer team tries to keep its unbeaten streak alive and avenge last season's first conference loss as the Trojans play host to Pfeiffer in Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference action Wednesday. Match time is 4 p.m. at Trojan Field.

Mount Olive (6-0-1 overall, 2-0-0 CVAC) defeated Limestone 2-0 on the road Saturday to extend the Trojans' unbeaten streak to 10, going back to last year's CVAC Tournament. Reid Clewis' goal early in the second half broke a scoreless tie. Clewis has scored a goal in each of the Trojans' six wins this year.

Clewis is tied for first in the CVAC in points per game (goals and assists) and ranks second in goals per contest. Junior Erik Small is tied for fourth in the conference in assists with three.

Defensively, sophomore goalkeeper Chris Roush leads the CVAC with a 0.75 goals against average. Roush has three shutouts this season.

Mount Olive ranks first in the CVAC in scoring with 3.71 goals per match. Defensively, the Trojans rank second with a 0.96 goals against average.

Pfeiffer (4-2-0, 2-0-0) is coming off a 2-1 victory Saturday over Lees-McRae. Mount Olive and Pfeiffer are in a three-way tie with Queens for second place in the CVAC standings, a half-game behind Anderson.

Both Mount Olive and Pfeiffer are ranked in the top 10 in this week's Southeast Region rankings. The Trojans are at No. 2 for the second consecutive week, while Pfeiffer is ranked No. 7.

Mount Olive won its first seven conference matches last season before Pfeiffer handed the Trojans a 1-0 loss, the first of three consecutive conference losses for the Trojans. Mount Olive rebounded by winning the CVAC Tournament.

Women hope

to end slump

The Mount Olive women's soccer team hopes to end a scoring slump and a losing skid as the Trojans play host to Pfeiffer in a Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference match-up Wednesday. Match time is 2 p.m. at Trojan Field.

Mount Olive (4-4-0 overall, 2-1-0 CVAC) is coming off a 4-0 loss Saturday at Limestone. The loss ended the Trojans' streak of nine consecutive wins over conference opponents, including three wins on their way to last year's CVAC Tournament championship.

The Trojans, which had scored at least one goal in 18 consecutive matches, has been held scoreless in each of their last two matches, marking the first time in two years the Trojans have suffered consecutive shutouts.

Despite the scoring slump, sophomore Gina Dos Santos continues to lead the CVAC with eight goals.

Pfeiffer (4-2-0, 3-0-0) is coming off a 1-0 overtime win against Lees-McRae Saturday.

Wednesday's contest is a rematch of last year's CVAC Tournament semifinal, won by Mount Olive 2-0.
