ROCKY MOUNT -- Rosewood graduate and North Carolina Wesleyan sophomore Javon Williams rushed for three touchdowns in a 41-28 loss at home to Huntingdon (AL) on Saturday.
Williams scored on runs of 73, 18 and 71 yards to lead the Bishops (1-2). He ended the game with 171 yards on 16 carries. His most impressive run came late in the first half, when he turned a pedestrian 8-yard gain on a sweep to the right sideline into a 71-yard touchdown after sprinting the length of the field then outrunning the defenders. His score brought the Bishops to within three at halftime, 24-21.
The NC Wesleyan defense, on the field for 40 minutes, gave up 515 yards of total offense to the Huntingdon (AL) Hawks Saturday afternoon.
However, Huntingdon (2-0) was able to dominate the line of scrimmage, rushing for over 300 yards as a team and averaging almost six yards per carry. Marshall Barfield led the squad, picking up 113 yards and matching Williams with three scores.
Wesleyan's Cedric Townsend, a James Kenan graduate, finished with 117 yards through the air on 8-of-14 passing and also ran the ball six times for 53 yards.
The Bishops return to action on Saturday at Methodist College in Fayetteville for their USA South Conference opener.
