JV/Middle school football -- Saints take non-conference shootout

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's defense stopped Goldsboro on a fourth-and-2 play at the 5-yard line and the Saints offense ran out the clock for a 31-26 non-conference victory at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

The Cougars (0-4) scored on their first two possessions. Jimmie Speight provided a 1-yard run and Iveon Sprangle returned a kickoff 80 yards for the second score. Goldsboro led 14-8.

The Saints (3-1) responded with 23 unanswered points and led 31-14 at halftime.

Goldsboro struck for a pair of third-quarter touchdowns. Quarterback Dustin Uzzardo converted a 1-yard sneak and Sprangle added a 35-yard run.

Southern Wayne received rushing touchdowns from Kenny Casper and Eric Futrell. Alex Aldridge snagged a 68-yard touchdown pass from Tristan Bass and Silonte Thompson caught a 15-yard TD strike from Ren Dewitt.

Tyler Edwards threw a pair of two-point conversion passes -- one each to Dewitt and Bass.

Sophomore middle linebacker Daquan Cozart led the Saints' defense with eight solo stops and three assists. Sophomore defensive end/linebacker Greg Stroud contributed six tackles.

Matt Wise recovered a fumble. Thompson forced a fumble and Deante Thomas recorded a sack. Reginald Price blocked a Cougar punt and also forced a fumble.

Dan Bryant paced the Goldsboro defense with six tackles, while A.J. Parker chipped in five. Darren Pittman and Antwan Greenfield each had four tackles.

Southern Wayne (3-1) is the guest of Southern Nash next week. Meanwhile, Goldsboro entertains Wilmington Hoggard.

Eastern Wayne 24

HOLLYWOOD -- D.H. Conley knocked Eastern Wayne from the unbeaten ranks by successfully converting two-point plays after touchdowns in a 30-24 victory Thursday evening.

"We just couldn't stop them defensively," said Warriors coach Brent Holland. "We'll take a week off, regroup and work on some things we need to get better at (doing)."

Quarterback David White accounted for two touchdowns -- a 40-yard rush and 15-yard pass to Darius Wilder. Orlando Midgette rushed for 91 yards and one touchdown. Stacey Edwards rambled for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Sophomore middle linebacker Anthony Williams led Eastern Wayne's defense with 14 tackles. Eric Brofft, a sophomore middle linebacker, provided eight tackles and two interceptions.

Eastern Wayne (3-1) entertains North Lenoir on Sept. 22.

Wilson Fike 20

C.B. Aycock 14

WILSON -- Jevontae Taylor rushed for 91 yards and a touchdown, but previously-unbeaten Charles B. Aycock couldn't overcome physical mistakes in a 20-14 loss to Wilson Fike.

"The team played hard, but we just had too many turnovers and that got us in the end," said first-year Aycock coach Ahmani Owens.

Kelton Lewis emerged the Golden Falcons' top receiver with 27 yards.

No defensive stats were provided.

C.B. Aycock (3-1) entertains North Lenoir next Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Hardy Talton Stadium.

Middle schools

Greenwood 30, Mount Olive 0 -- Chris Barfield notched touchdowns on runs of 53 and 8 yards in the season-opening game for both teams. Danny Smith added a 25-yard touchdown and Yakima Battle contributed a 60-yard touchdown. Barfield finished the day with 120 yards rushing. Defensive leaders were Rasid Williams (one interception), Tre Thornton (two fumble recoveries) and Gerrell Davis (one fumble recovery). Greenwood (1-0) entertains Goldsboro next Monday, while Mount Olive is the guest of Rosewood.

Rosewood 36, Grantham 6 -- It was the season-opening game for both teams. No additional details were reported.

Goldsboro 22, Norwayne 16 -- Deonis Cox, Freddie Jones and Matthew Wooard each scored a touchdown for Goldsboro.

Eastern Wayne 28, Dillard 0 -- Will White rushed for 107 yards and one touchdown, and added a team-high 10 tackles on defense. Linwood Grantham provided touchdowns on runs of 40 and 20 yards. Johnathan Midgett recovered a blocked punt and returned it 45 yards for a touchdown. Midgette and Hasan Best each had eight tackles on defense. Dominique Sadler added six stops. Eastern Wayne (1-0) entertains Grantham next Thursday.

Brogden 32, Spring Creek 6 -- Jabari Dos Santos returned the opening kickoff 70 yards for a touchdown in the Rams' season-opening win. Juan Segura, Lorenzo Alford and Gary Woodard each rushed for a touchdown. Steven Stanley paced the defense with eight tackles. Woodard contributed eight tackles, two sacks and one interception. Dos Santos recorded five tackles for loss. Brogden (1-0) entertains Dillard next Thursday afternoon.
