Clewis honored

MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College forward Reid Clewis was named the NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference men's soccer player of the week Tuesday.

Clewis earned POY accolades last season.

A senior from Wilmington, Clewis scored a goal in both of nationally 13th-ranked Mount Olive's two wins on the road last week -- 2-0 at USC-Aiken and 4-2 in the Trojans' CVAC opener at Erskine. Clewis has scored a goal in each of the Trojans' first five matches this season to extend his goal-scoring streak to six, which ranks among the top 30 goal-scoring streaks in NCAA II men's soccer.

Clewis is among the CVAC scoring leaders with five goals and two assists so far this season. He ended the 2004 season with the game-winning goal in the Trojans' 1-0 victory over Belmont Abbey in the CVAC tournament title game.

Mount Olive is currently 5-0-1 and is ranked in the NSCAA/Adidas Division II Men's Soccer Top 25 for the second consecutive week, moving up nine spots from last week's No. 22 debut. The national ranking is the first in men's soccer history for the Trojans, who are also ranked No. 2 in the Southeast Region.

The Trojans opened the season with five consecutive wins, including a pair of regional road wins last week. The Trojans posted three shutouts in their first five matches and outscored their opponents 21-4.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday at Limestone (S.C.) College in Gaffney. Match time is 4 p.m.

Snyder ties

for sixth

Lindsey Snyder, an Eastern Wayne grad, shot a second-round 80 for Mount Olive and tied for sixth out of 52 golfers at the Anderson College Women's Golf Invitational, which concluded Tuesday at Anderson, S.C. Snyder, who was tied for ninth after Monday's first round, finished with a two-round total of 161.

Kate Somek, who was in sole possession of fifth place after the first round, finished with a 172 and tied for 24th. Deborah Woodrum tied for 35th with a 182, Kristen Freeman carded a 186 to tie for 40th and Brianna Whaley placed 50th with a 224.

Mount Olive finished eighth in the team standings with a 701. Catawba won the 10-team tournament with a 653.

The Trojans continue their fall schedule September 26-27 at the St. Andrews Presbyterian College Invitational.

MOC men golfers

finish in seventh

Mick Moberg and Chris Bitzenhofer placed in the top 20 out of 53 golfers as Mount Olive finished seventh at the Anderson College Men's Golf Invitational, which concluded Tuesday.

Moberg shot a 76 for the second consecutive day and tied for 16th with a 152, while Bitzenhofer finished one shot back and tied for 20th.

Jonathan Greene tied for 23rd with a 154, Brandon Barfield tied for 37th at 160 and Brad Alford tied for 43rd with a 162.

The Trojans finished two shots behind St. Andrews and one stroke ahead of Lincoln Memorial. Cape Fear Community College won the 11-team tournament with a 617.

Mount Olive returns to action Monday as the Trojans compete in the Old North State Invitational, hosted by Pfeiffer University.

Garcia, Serra post wins

MOC's Gabriel Garcia and Guillherme Serra posted wins over Division I opponents in the first round of the UNCW/Landfall Tennis Invitational over the weekend at Wilmington, N.C. Garcia defeated Tristan Heinrich of University of North Carolina 5-7, 7-5, (10-1) and Serra defeated Andy Caress of Coastal Carolina 4-6, 7-5, (12-10).

In the semifinals of the "Teal Bracket," Garcia was up 5-0 in the first set when Stephen Rozycki retired due to an injury. Garcia fell 6-1, 7-5 Caio Piaccentin of UNC-Wilmington in the final.

Serra fell to Dennis Myers of UNC-Wilmington 6-2, 7-5 in semifinal of the "Navy Bracket." Felipe Olarte fell to Elliott Quibell 6-1, 6-0 in the first round of the Navy Bracket.

Serra and Olarte combined to finish fourth in the men's doubles bracket, defeating a Brady Herman and Kevin Beard of Elon 8-4 in the first round before falling to teams from Coastal Carolina in the semifinal round and the fourth-place match.

In the women's competition, Lucia Henkle posted a 1-2 mark at the tournament, defeating Presley Thomas of East Carolina 6-1, 6-4. Mariana Shimoda took Kate Marshall of UNC-Wilmington to a tie-breaker before falling 4-6, 6-3 (12-10).

Henkle and Shimoda posted a 1-2 mark in the doubles competition, picking up an 8-5 win over Cassie Martin and Kristin Mears of UNC-Wilmington.

Mount Olive returns to action Sept. 23 as the Trojans compete in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference fall tournament at Wilson.

compete at Pembroke

Freshman Ashley Baldridge ran a career-best 23:19 in the women's 5k to place 29th out of 65 runners and Tim Insley finished 37th out of 61 runners with a time of 29:41 in the men's 8K in the UNC Pembroke Invitational Saturday at Pembroke.

In the team standings, Mount Olive finished eighth out of eight team in the men's competition and 10th out of 10 teams in the women's competition.

Tamika Goff placed 38th in the women's run with a time of 24:33, while Theresa Thompson (25:29) finished 50th, followed by Krystal Kee (25:39) in 51st. Becky Garrod was 54th at 25:52.

On the men's side, Cory Doub was 41st with a time of 30:35, while Charles Eason (32:41) and Kyle Lewis (32:55) took the Nos. 54 and 55 positions, respectively. Kevin Acree was 59th at 33:51.

St. Andrews won the men's team competition and Wingate captured the women's team title.

Mount Olive returns to action Saturday as the Trojans compete in the Coastal Carolina Invitational.
