DUE WEST -- The No. 22 ranked Mount Olive's men's soccer team picked up an impressive road victory over a young, but tough Erskine squad, 4-2, Saturday night at Huggins Field. Erskine played most of the contest with nine freshmen on the field, while the experienced Trojans proved why they are one of the top teams in NCAA Division II.

Mount Olive struck first at the 17:43 mark on a breakaway goal by Reid Clewis. The Trojans pushed the lead to 2-0 four minutes later when Woody Stilley's cross was headed in the back of the net by Brian Fitzmaurice.

The Trojans maintained the 2-0 until 16:34 remained in the second half. Mout Olive's Chris Varela pushed the lead to 3-0 when he broke free near midfield on a pass from Erik Small. The Trojans pushed the lead to 4-0 at the 6:46 on a goal by Adam Caston.

Erskine got on the board at the 6:05 mark when freshman Marc Huie took fellow freshman Keith Gardiner's header and rocketed the ball in the back of the net. Huie added his second goal at the 1:56 mark to trim the lead to 4-2. Huie nearly missed another goal at 1:11.

Mount Olive, ranked 22nd in the National NCAA Division II poll, improved to 5-0 and 1-0 in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference. The Trojans travel to Guilford College in non-conference action on Tuesday.

Erskine fell to 2-2 on the season and 0-1 in the Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference. The Fleet returns to action next Saturday at Barton College.

DUE WEST, S.C. -- Mount Olive scored three minutes into the 1st overtime period to give the Trojans a 2-1 victory over Erskine (S.C.) in women's college soccer on Saturday afternoon at Huggins Field.

Mount Olive got on the board early at 37:48 when Emily Escolas scored on a cross from teammate Jackie Jimenez. The Trojans held the lead at 1-0 for the next 76 minutes until Erskine junior Jamie Locke gained control of the ball in the box amidst numerous Erskine teammates. Locke pounded the ball in the net at 7:17 to the tie the game at 1-1.

Mount Olive made quick work of the game in the 1st overtime period. Trojan freshman Portia Taylor nearly ended the game seconds into overtime when she narrowly misfired from the right wing. Two minute later, Jessica Smoot knocked home the game-winner for Mount Olive as Jimenez got credited with her second assist of the game.

The Trojans improved to 4-2-0 and 2-0 in Carolinas-Virginia Athletic Conference play. Mount Olive hosts N.C. Wesleyan on Tuesday at 4 p.m.

Erskine dropped to 1-3-1 on the season and 0-1 in the CVAC. The Fleet return to action on Wednesday night when they play host to South Atlantic Conference foe Presbyterian College.

Gabriel Garcia posted a 4-6, 7-5, 10-1 (10-point tie-breaker) victory over Tristan Heinrich of Division I North Carolina in the opening round of the "Teal Bracket" at the UNCW/Landfall Tennis Intercollegiate Friday at Wilmington, N.C. Guillherme Serra also had a win over a Division I opponent, defeating Andy Caress of Coastal Carolina 4-6, 7-5, 12-10 (tie-breaker). The tournament concluded today.
