Kenan pounds Titans

WARSAW--James Kenan unleashed one of the greatest offensive onslaughts in its 49-year history Friday night, rolling up 607 yard of offense -- 575 rushing -- in a 62-0 rout of Heide Trask at Bill Taylor Field.

The Tigers (2-2) had 13 players carry the ball, and seven scored a touchdown. Two were by senior Ronnie Williams, including a 59-yard dash. Junior reserve defensive lineman Jermaine Young capped the scoring with a three-yard fumble recovery run.

A 26-point fourth quarter came with mostly reserves in the game, but didn't set well with third-year Kenan Coach Kevin Motsinger.

"We played everybody," he said. "You try to have class, but you get a fumble, an interception, turnovers, you know? You put guys in and they're gonna play hard, and that's where it all starts. To be honest, I didn't see much offense at all tonight.

I was just trying to tweak things defensively to get ready to play the people in our conference. I've said since day one that we ought to have a very good football team. We're very athletic, and we've got more speed than we've had since I've been here.

"We still ain't as fast as some folks, but we're a lot faster for us folks."

It was Kenan's third straight win over the Titans, a fourth-year varsity program from Rocky Point in southern Pender County. The Tigers have outscored Trask 148-6 in the series. Trask (2-1) had opened with a 60-0 rout of Mattamuskeet and a 30-6 romp over Dixon.

Kenan won its second straight after opening losses to Class 2-A East Central Conference powers East Duplin (37-6) and Northside Jacksonville (7-0). Last week, they beat 2-A Farmville Central 28-22 in overtime.

Williams led the Tigers with 171 yards rushing on nine carries. Kenan had 14 runs of 15 yards or more and averaged 11.1 yards per carry, exactly 10 yards more per rush than Trask.
