Aycock's Taylor, Dobbins solid in win over GHS

Dontay Taylor got things rolling for Charles B. Aycock. Carlos Dobbins, however, sealed the deal.

Both ran for two touchdowns each Friday night as the visiting Golden Falcons topped cross-county rival Goldsboro, 46-27.

Taylor ran for his two scores in the first quarter while Dobbins did his damage in the final frame. Tailback Spruce Lee and quarterback Thomas Pilkington added rushing TDs for Aycock while defensive standout Cortez Gilbert returned a first-quarter interception for a score as the Falcons (2-2) snapped a two-game losing skid.

"It was a big win -- now we need to keep it going in the right direction," Falcons coach Randy Pinkowski said. "We cleaned up a lot of execution errors that have plagued us the last two weeks, and that was big for us."

For Goldsboro, quarterback Adrian Lewis and wideout Jacob Sykes had their best nights of the season. Lewis was 16-of-31 passing for 222 yards and rushed for two touchdowns while Sykes -- who has verbally committed to play football at Virginia Tech -- hauled in six receptions for 104 yards and returned a first-quarter kickoff 74 yards for a score.

The Cougars (1-3), however, had three critical turnovers in the game and several penalties kept scoring drives alive for Aycock.

"I blame this (loss) on undisciplined football," Goldsboro coach Maurice Jackson said. "We're a disciplined team, but we didn't show it tonight. Three penalties led to 21 points for them. Take those 21 points away and look at the score. The effort was there, but I was disappointed with our discipline."

Taylor, who finished the night with a team-high 84 yards on 13 carries, got the Falcons on the scoreboard first with a 13-yard touchdown on a draw play.

Less than 20 seconds later, Gilbert -- who had a game-high 18 tackles (nine solo) -- stepped in front of a Lewis pass and raced 45 yards down the sideline to put the visitors ahead 13-0.

"Cortez was all over the field," Pinkowski said. "He played a great game."

On the ensuing kickoff, Sykes scooped up a bouncing kick and raced 74 yards to pay dirt to cut Aycock's lead to 13-7.

It was the third touchdown in a 37-second span.

Pilkington, who was 9-of-14 passing for 166 yards, hit Thomas Artis for a 34-yard pass to start the Falcons' next drive, then Taylor broke off runs of 13 and 21 yards to put Aycock ahead 20-8 after one quarter of play. Artis had a game-high 115 receiving yards on four catches.

"We knew this one was going to be a fight, and it was critical to get off to a good start," Pilkington said. "Goldsboro's a good team and this is a big win for us after two losses. Now we need to build on this."

Goldsboro, however, held C.B. Aycock scoreless in the second quarter as the Cougars put together a late touchdown drive to make the score 20-14 at the half. Lewis found Sykes deep for a 74-yard completion, and Lewis capped the drive with a 2-yard quarterback sneak.

A 1-yard sneak by Pilkington and a 21-yard jaunt by Lee put the Falcons ahead 33-14 in the third quarter, but Lewis kept the Cougars in the game with a 60-yard strike to a wide open Brandon Herring to cut Aycock's lead to 12 heading into the final 12 minutes.

That's when Dobbins took over.

The senior -- who finished with 63 yards on eight hauls -- took it in from 2 yards out with 8:27 to play, then put the game out of reach with a 15-yard TD run to up Aycock's lead to 46-21.

The Golden Falcons finished with 333 yards of total offense with Goldsboro right behind with 322. Aycock make the going tough for Goldsboro feature back Treme Boone, who ran for a 164 yards and five touchdowns in last week's 42-8 win at Jones Senior. On Friday, Boone managed just 58 yards on 27 carries (2.1 avg.).

"That was huge to for our defense to slow down a big, physical team like Goldsboro," Pinkowski said. "This was everything you expect from an Aycock-Goldsboro game. Both teams were going at it 100 mph -- it's just a good rivalry and we've got a lot of respect for them."

Charles B. Aycock will return home for the first time since Aug. 19 as the Falcons host Wilson Fike on Friday. Goldsboro will host another cross-county contest as Southern Wayne comes to town Friday night.
