Warriors, Golden Falcons fare well in ECC cross country opener

WILSON -- Eastern Wayne and Charles B. Aycock cross country runners claimed the top three spots in boys competition during the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference opener Tuesday afternoon at Wilson Hunt.

Michael Lawrence and Joey Burridge crossed the line first and third, respectively, to help the Warriors (3-1, 3-0 ECC) take first with 37 points.

Aycock's Alan Toler claimed second in 20 minutes, 6 seconds and aided the Golden Falcons' run to a second-place showing with 41 points. Hunt ended up third at 44, followed by Wilson Beddingfield with 122.

Southern Wayne participated, but didn't have the minimum five runners necessary to post a team score.

Lawrence ran the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes. Burridge turned in a time of 20:16. Paul Wruck emerged sixth for Eastern Wayne in 21:09. Completing the Warriors' first league win of the season were Tyler Thornton (10th, 22:42) and Steven Hendricks (17th, 23:01).

Daniel Pennington captured seventh for Aycock in 21:51. Teammates Trey Benton and Jesse Fryt seized ninth and 11th place, respectively. Dalton Denning took 12th.

Alan Bennett led the Saints with a 19th-place time of 23:30.

Eastern Wayne's Helen Baddour crossed the line two minutes slower than meet winner Astin Barnes of Hunt during the girls' portion of the meet. Hunt claimed the team victory with 32 points, compared to 45 for Eastern Wayne (1-2, 1-1).

Aycock grabbed third with 50 points. Neither Beddingfield or the Saints fielded a team.

Natalie Taylor (24:49), Lyddia Hirschy (25:54) and Ashley Deal (28:10) finished among the top 15 for Eastern Wayne.

The Golden Falcons received solid outings from Rebekka Katko (5th, 25:28), Danielle Stally (8th, 26:54), Megan Milles (9th, 27:27) and Duna Gylfadottir (13th, 28:01).

Eastern Wayne returns to action Saturday in a meet at UNC Wilmington.

Johnson, Eagles

take non-league meet

Doug Johnson emerged the top runner and three Wayne Christian teammates finished among the top six in a 24-31, non-conference victory over Rocky Mount Prep on Tuesday afternoon.

Johnson ran the 3.1-mile course in 19 minutes, 46 seconds. Justin Brathwaite complemented Johnson's effort with a third-place time of 19:46. Jon Massey claimed fourth in 24:40, while Aaron Summerville grabbed sixth palce in 26:42.

Hunter Dentzer rounded out the Eagles' scoring with a 10th-place showing of 30:49.

Wayne Christian runs again next Tuesday at C.B. Aycock.

Aycock extends

ECC 3-A win streak

WILSON -- C.B. Aycock opened defense of its Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference title with 9-0 victory over league newcomer Wilson Beddingfield on Tuesday afternoon.

The Golden Falcons extended the program's phenomenal 27-year conference-match win streak to 283. They entertain independent schools member Greenfield at 3:30 today and welcome Kinston at 4 p.m. Thursday.

"We played excellent in singles, but we need improvement in doubles," said Aycock coach Luke Vail.

The No. 1 doubles of Raychel Batts-Carlyn Claiborne struggled to a 9-7 win. Second-seeded Nicole Taylor-Laine Purcell won 8-2. The third-seeded duo of Lizzie Sodoma-Kristen Prosser prevailed 8-0.

Batts, Claiborne, Taylor, Purcell, Sodoma and Katie Perry each picked up a straight-set singles win. Batts, Taylor and Perry each shut out their respective opponents.

Rosewood opened its Carolina 1-A Conference slate with an 8-1 victory against league newcomer James Kenan on Tuesday afternoon.

Top-seeded Kayce Brantham experienced little trouble with a 6-0, 6-0 conquest of Christa Jones. Teammates Sidney Worrell, Missy Bailey, Erica Nichols, Jamie Andrews and Jillian Casey followed with straight-set wins.

Brantham-Worrell and Andrews-Karli Beasley each survived 8-6 in their respective doubles matches. Bailey-Nichols dumped Megan Sanderlin-Lorry Chestnut 8-0.

It was a rematch last year's first-round, dual-team playoff match won by the Eagles. Kenan competes in the Super Six Conference in all other sports.

Rams collect 117th

straight EPC win

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central began defense of its Eastern Plains 2-A Conference regular-season championship with a 9-0 defeat of North Pitt at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex.

The Rams collected their 117th consecutive EPC victory.

No. 1 seed Meredith Rouse, third-seeded Ashley Harrell and fifth-seeded Brittany Horton each claimed a shutout win. Christi Murphy (No. 2 seed), Michelle Jernigan (No. 4) and Elizabeth Cooper (No. 6) each lost one game.

Rouse-Horton triumphed at No. 1 doubles.

Veteran Greene Central coach Donald Clark put younger players in at Nos. 2 and 3 doubles, and received quality wins. Ashley Grant-Dana Spivey won 8-0 at the No. 2 spot. The No. 3 tandem of Cally Hudson-Sarah Beth Carraway claimed an 8-2 win.

It was North Pitt's season opener.

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne triumphed in two of three doubles matches and clipped Wayne Country Day 5-4 on Tuesday afternoon.

The No. 2 tandem of Emily Martin-Lisa Chowthi won 8-2. Teammates Leann Jarman-Amber Bowden posted an 8-0 shutout at the No. 3 slot.

Patrice Monroe, April Tucker and Brooke Dove provided straight-set wins in singles for the Saints.

The Chargers received singles victories from top-seeded Georgia Crowe, second-seeded Cassie Broach and fourth-seeded Katie Hampton. Broach escaped a first-set tiebreaker and outlasted the Saints' Casey Lewis 7-6 (4), 7-5. Hampton split sets before stopping Stephanie Cox 6-1, 4-6, 10-8.

Wayne Country Day (0-2) plays host to Arendell-Parrott Academy this afternoon at Wayne Community College.

up CPIC road win

ROCKY MOUNT -- Sam Steed collected a hat trick-plus-one -- all four goals in Wayne Country Day's 4-0 conquest of Rocky Mount Academy on Tuesday afternoon.

It was the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference opener for both teams.

Steed scored in the 5th, 29th, 67th and 79th minutes. Hyo Won Ha assisted on Steed's final goal.

Sophomore keeper Ryan Ford recorded eight saves and earned the shutout.

Defensive standouts were Ford, Travis Davis, Jeff Franklin and Kevin Herring.

The Chargers (4-1, 1-0 CPIC) play host to Southern Wayne at 4:30 today.

Hawks shut

down Rosewood

Brandon Sutton tallied one goal and assisted on another in North Lenoir's 3-0, non-conference decision against Rosewood at Branch Pope Field on Tuesday afternoon.

Sutton's goal occurred in the first half off an assist from Israel Huerta. Sutton assisted Alex McGaughy on a goal to give the Hawks a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Ricky Garman concluded North Lenoir's scoring with an unassisted mark in the second half.

North Lenoir (3-3) entertains county rival Kinston at 7 p.m. today.

Golden Demons

WILSON -- Three players scored one goal each in C.B. Aycock's 4-3, non-conference loss Tuesday evening at Wilson Fike.

Alex Rodriguez, Carson Sasser and Garrett Davis each tallied one goal for the Golden Falcons, who fell to 1-3 overall.

Joseph Allegood, Fernando Guzzman, Austen King and Tyler Tingle each collected a goal for the Golden Demons. Chandler Bryant dished out two assists.

Aycock entertains Clayton next Monday.

North Lenoir

sweeps rival Kinston

LAGRANGE -- North Lenoir completed its regular-season sweep of county rival Kinston 25-14, 25-19, 25-12 on Tuesday afternoon at Wooten Gymnasium.

Outside hitter Brittany Sanders provided six kills for the Hawks, now 2-5 on the season heading into today's home battle against archrival South Lenoir.

The Hawks scored 18 points with Caitlyn Howard on serve and 17 with Lauren Hudson at the line.

Barrow, Hill

lead unbeaten RHS

SPIVEY'S CORNER -- Abigail Barrow dished out 16 assists and Courtney Hill provided nine kills in Rosewood's 25-5, 25-13, 25-15 non-conference victory over Midway.

Barrow added two aces and one dig for the Eagles, who remained unbeaten in five outings and completed the regular-season sweep of the Raiders. Hill contributed one ace, three blocks and three digs.

Kasey Grey blocked four Midway kill attempts and had one kill. Clare Narron contributed two digs and three kills. Brooke Goff chipped in two kills.

Kelly Gurley distributed five assists and served two aces. Aubrey Reinhard registered one ace and one kill.

"We were able to try different things tonight," said Rosewood coach Jennifer Cochran. "We were able to expand our offense tonight and focus on our serving. Abigail was tremendous from the serving line."

The Eagles scored 23 points with Barrow on serve.

Rosewood is the guest of Southern Wayne on Thursday.

Conquerors

Berean Christian of Fayetteville kept Faith Christian winless on the N.C. Christian Schools Association scene with a 25-7, 25-14, 25-11 victory Tuesday evening.

Despite the Conquerors' third loss, coach Jamie Conlon praised her team's effort.

"We had some different players come in and help us out a little bit," said Conlon. "A lot of the ladies did well individually, but we've just got to pull it together as a team."

Senior Elizabeth Clarke emerged the defensive leader with seven digs, and added one kill and one service ace.

Freshman Christina Phillips served two aces and had one kill. Freshman Alyssa Hill collected two kills, while sophomore Summer Honeycutt contributed one kill. Kristen Maddox, a sophomore, had one dig along with freshman Rebecca Smith.

Faith Christian (0-3 NCCSA) travels to Hilltop Christian in Fuquay-Varina on Thursday. They return home for another conference match Friday against Falls Road Baptist from Rocky Mount.

Sammy Schurhammer served nine aces as Wayne Country Day swept Oxford Orphanage 25-20, 25-10, 25-10 in Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference play Tuesday afternoon.

Schurhammer added two kills and one dig for the Chargers, who evened their CPIC worksheet at 1-1.

Ellen Elmore contributed three aces, five kills and seven assists. Ashley Clark recorded four kills, four aces and two assists. Erin Taylor and Stephanie Knutson each had two kills.

Overall, the Chargers (3-2) served 21 aces in the straight-set win.

Roxie Phillips and Christie Phillips emerged the Eagles defensive leaders with 10 and nine digs, respectively. Caroline Tart had eight digs, followed by Carissa Morrison with seven.

Overall, Rosewood had 50 digs.

WILSON -- Kelly Forbis fired an 80 in C.B. Aycock's 162-176, non-conference loss Tuesday afternoon against Wilson Fike at Willow Springs Country Club.

Brooke Newell complemented Forbis' effort with a 96. Emily Stewart posted a 114.

Fike's Casey Narron, a sophomore, finished the day with a medal-winning 3-over par 75. Narron double bogeyed her first hole. She added birdies on the par-5 sixth hole and par-3 10th.
