MOUNT OLIVE -- In his first collegiate start, sophomore Bradley Carroll scored a goal in the ninth minute and Mount Olive went on to defeat Newberry 3-0 in NCAA Division II non-conference men's soccer Saturday at Trojan Field.

The win keeps Mount Olive unbeaten this season and extends the Trojans' winning streak to six dating back to last season's Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Tournament championship.

Mount Olive (3-0-0) broke a scoreless tie when sweeper Brandon Mills captured a loose ball at midfield and served ahead to Carroll, who beat the defense for his third goal of the season. Newberry (0-1-0) had a chance for the game's first goal less than two minutes into the match, but Trojan goalkeeper Chris Roush dove to deflect Jeffrey Bell's shot from the top of the box.

Mount Olive went into halftime with a 1-0 lead, despite outshooting Newberry 9-2 in the first half. The Trojans extended the lead to 2-0 nine minutes into the second half when Chris Varela served to Chris Jasso, who crossed to a wide open Reid Clewis in front of the goal. Clewis leads the Trojans in points and is tied with Carroll for the team lead in goals.

Newberry had an opportunity to close to within a goal in the 58th minute after a restart deep in the Mount Olive zone, but Miles Childers' shot went just over the crossbar. The Trojans closed out the scoring in the 63rd minute on Erik Small's penalty kick after a Newberry handball in the box.

Mount Olive outshot Newberry 17-6 for the match. Roush recorded one save as he lowered his season goals against average to 0.79. The Trojans also recorded a team save when defender Ryan Brown stopped a shot from just in front of the line early in the first half. Bryan Linn recorded five saves for Newberry.

Mount Olive is off until Thursday when the Trojans travel to Aiken, S.C., to take on USC-Aiken. Match time is 7 p.m. Newberry opens South Atlantic Conference play Wednesday at 4 p.m. against Wingate.

MELBOURNE, Fla. -- Danielle Emhoff scored a pair of goals less than 90 seconds apart during the final six minutes to lead Florida Tech to a come-from-behind 2-1 victory over Mount Olive in non-conference NCAA Division II women's soccer Saturday at Melbourne. The loss snaps the Trojans' 11-match winning streak dating back to last October.

After a scoreless first half, Mount Olive (2-1-0) got on the scoreboard when Jackie Jimenez captured a loose ball and scored her second goal of the season to give the Trojans a 1-0 lead in the 50th minute.

The lead held until Florida Tech (2-0-0) tied the match at the 83:53 mark when Emhoff scored off of a corner kick. Emhoff scored what proved to be the game-winner 77 seconds later.

Despite outshooting Florida Tech 16-13, Mount Olive suffered its first loss since falling 3-2 at Charleston (W. Va.) on October 16, 2004. The Trojans have won 22 of their last 26 matches with each of the four losses decided by one goal.

Mount Olive concludes its trip to the Sunshine State Sunday as the Trojans head to St. Augustine to take on Flagler. Match time is 2 p.m.

LAKELAND, Fla. -- Heidi Busch posted her second double-double in four matches with 15 kills and 12 digs to lead Mount Olive to a 30-27, 30-24, 30-18 victory over Franklin Pierce (N.H.) in the finale of the Florida Southern Volleyball Classic Saturday at Lakeland. The Trojans finished the tournament with a 2-2 record, splitting its matches in each day of the two-day tournament.

Mount Olive (2-2) served 10 aces against Franklin Pierce as Anna Luft led the Trojans with four service aces. Sara Christie recorded three aces to go with 35 assists. Colby Mangum added two aces and three blocks, while Nikki Murphy recorded a career-high three blocks to go with eight digs. Sam Mitchell added 10 digs and Mallory Peavler tallied eight digs as the Trojans recorded a season-high 54 digs.

In Saturday's first match, Mount Olive fell to tournament host and nationally 15th-ranked Florida Southern 30-19, 30-20, 32-30. Busch led the Trojans with 12 kills.

Florida Southern (6-1) was led by Rachelle Konczal with a match-high 13 kills. Franklin Pierce (0-4) was led by Nichole Bucholz with 10 kills.

Mount Olive is off until Thursday when the Trojans travel to Hartsville, S.C., to open Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference play against Coker. Match time is 6:30 p.m.
