Rosewood netters claim season opener

MOUNT OLIVE -- Rosewood triumphed in two of three doubles matches and dealt Southern Wayne a 6-3 loss in the season opener for both teams Tuesday afternoon.

The teams played at Mount Olive College.

Kayce Brantham, the reigning Class 1-A Carolina Conference singles champion, lost just one game against the Saints' top-seeded Beth Brown. Teammates Sidney Worrell, Missy Bailey and Erica Nichols also prevailed in the humid and high heat index temperatures.

Nichols dropped the opening set against Katlyn Thornton and rallied for a 1-6, 6-1, 7-5 win.

Brantham-Worrell and Bailey-Nichols also won in doubles.

The Saints picked up singles victories from Tara Hirsch and Leslie Barrow. Hirsch and doubles mate Christy Westbrook stopped the Eagles' Jamie Andrews-Jillian Casey 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.

The teams meet again Thursday afternoon at Rosewood.

BAILEY -- Rain washed out Tuesday afternoon's non-conference battle between Charles B. Aycock and Southern Nash.

The match will not be rescheduled.

The Golden Falcons (3-1) entertain Tarboro, of the Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference, at 4 p.m. today.

knock off Hawks

PIKEVILLE -- The C.B. Aycock junior varsity swept the doubles en route to a 7-2 non-conference victory over North Lenoir on Tuesday afternoon.

The tandems of Kristen Bennett-Kara Kelly and Margaret Connelly-Jessica Davis each prevailed by identical 8-1 scores. The No. 2 duo of Courtney Barnes-Mallory Strickland doubled up the Hawks' Ashley Fillipelli-Haley Bright 8-4.

Bennett, Barnes, Kelly and Davis each triumphed in singles.

Fillipelli and Bright each won a singles match for the Hawks, now winless in three outings.

Both teams return to action at home today. East Duplin is the guest of North Duplin, while Aycock puts its 3-0 mark on the line against Greenfield Academy.

Lakewood rallies,

tops North Duplin

CALYPSO -- Reigning Super Six 1-A tournament champion Lakewood rallied from a two-set deficit to defeat North Duplin 23-25, 20-25, 25-20, 25-20, 15-9 in a non-conference match Tuesday afternoon.

The Rebels suffered their first defeat in three outings.

Sierra Ward provided 13 kills, four digs, three blocks and four aces. Kayla Myers added eight digs, one kill and four aces. Brittany Carr contributed nine digs, one kill and three aces.

Julie Ivey served four aces to go along with one kill. Lauren Blackmore collected four kills.

"It was a tough loss," said North Duplin coach Heather Best. "We've just got to finish what we start, which will come with our maturity as a team."

North Duplin visits Hobbton on Thursday.

Conquerors still

seek first win

Visiting Mt. Calvary of Hookerton turned back Faith Christian 25-23, 28-26, 25-12 in a N.C. Christian Schools Association contest Tuesday evening.

Rebecca Smith handed out 11 assists in the three-set match. Kristen Maddox added three digs on defense.

Alyssa Hill and Kaytlin Floars added one kill each. Jillian Sanders and Elizabeth Clarke each recorded a dig.

Natalie Thibeaux provided four digs and two aces.

Faith Christian has just two seniors on its 15-player roster.

"We did a great job," said Faith Christian coach Jamie Conlon. "We stayed right with them most of the games. We have a young team this year. We know that even though tonight didn't yield a win, we can see a lot of improvement."

The Conquerors (0-2) are the guests of Victory Christian-Elizabeth City on Friday.

Rosewood cruises

past Hobbton

Rosewood's Stephanie Rhodes notched three kills and two blocks in the Eagles' 25-10, 25-6, 25-21 win at home over Hobbton on Monday.

The Eagles (2-0) also got six digs and two kills from Clare Narron, while Kelly Gurley served up two aces. Abigail Barrow added 12 assists and two digs and Kasey Grey posted two blocks.
