TIGERVILLE, S.C. - Gina Dos Santos tied a school record with four goals as Mount Olive opened the 2005 season with a 5-0 win over North Greenville in non-conference women's soccer Saturday at Tigerville. The win is the 10th in a row for the Trojans, dating back to last season.
Mount Olive (1-0-0) broke a scoreless tie in the fifth minute on Dos Santos' first goal off a double assist by Heidi Philip and Kate Painter. Philip and Painter both ranked among the top 15 in the nation in assists last year. Freshmen were involved in the Trojans' remaining four goals.
Dos Santos scored a goal in the 28th minute on an assist by Lyndsay Brennan as Mount Olive went into halftime with a 2-0 lead. The Trojans added a goal less than two minutes into the second half as Dos Santos scored on an assist by Jessica Smoot. Smoot then assisted Portia Taylor on her first collegiate goal three minutes later to extend the Trojans' lead to 4-0. Taylor recorded an assist on Dos Santos' record-tying goal in the 58th minute to close out the scoring.
Dos Santos' four goals ties the record set by Jennifer Domino in 1998 against Chowan.
Mount Olive returns to action today and travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to open NCAA Division II Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference play against new conference member Converse, which joined the CVAC as an affiliate member. Match time is 1 p.m.
