Futrelle, Steed record hat tricks for Chargers

WILSON -- Will Futrelle and Sam Steed each notched a hat trick (three goals) in Wayne Country Day's 6-1 conquest of Southern Nash in The Brittany -- an inaugural boys' soccer tournament at the J. Burt Gillette Complex -- Saturday morning.

Futrelle tallied goals in the eighth, 55th and 68th minutes. Travis Davis assisted on the first mark. Hyo Won Ha earned the assist on the second goal, a header off a cross. David Wilson's assist helped Futrelle complete his hat trick late in the second half.

Steed collected unassisted goals in the 38th, 48th and 74th minutes.

Wayne Country Day owned a decisive 24-7 advantage in shots on goal against the Firebirds, of the Class 3-A NEW Athletic 6 Conference.

Davis, Kevin Herring and Jeff Franklin emerged the defensive leaders for the Chargers. Herring received the game ball recognizing his sportsmanship during the 80-minute contest.

The ball has the No. 18 on it and honors former Wilson Hunt standout Brittany Willis, who perished in a senseless violent crime during her senior season.

Wayne Country Day (2-0) entertains Rosewood at 4 p.m. Monday.

Cross country

Eagle runners fare well

DURHAM -- Wayne Christian runners Doug Johnson, Jennifer Price and Bianca Wall each turned in a top-five performance during a Class 1-A Carolina Christian Conference cross country meet at Cresset Christian.

Johnson collected a second-place time of 19 minutes, 46 seconds in the boys' meet. The Eagles finished third overall, just one point behind Village Christian of Fayetteville. Cresset scored 34 points.

Teammates Jon Massey and Justin Brathwaite crossed the line 13th and 14th, respectively. Travis Thomas (16th, 24:26), Aaron Summerville (19th, 26:42) and Hunter Dentzer (23rd, 30:28) competed for the Eagles.

On the girls' side, Price ended up fourth in 25:35. Wall claimed fifth one minute after Price. Teammates Shelle Anderson (11th, 29:18), Kayla Kennedy (12th, 30:37) and Martha Summerlin (16th, 34:02) helped the Eagles take second behind meet winner Village Christian.

Chargers take opener

KINSTON -- Ashley Clark provided a team-high five kills in Wayne Country Day's season-opening 25-21, 19-25, 25-21, 26-28, 15-12 conquest of Arendell-Parrott Academy.

Clark finished the five-set match with seven aces and two digs defensively.

Ellen Elmore and Sammy Schurhammer combined for six kills and 15 service aces. Stephanie Sykes added two aces, one kill and four digs. Erin Taylor chipped in four kills and four digs.

Caroline Lewis contributed one ace and one kill.

"They played hard, but we made a lot of mental mistakes," said second-year Charger coach Juliet Jones. "Once we get past the little mistakes, we will be fine. The girls never gave up and I am proud of them."

Wayne Country Day (1-0) entertains Wayne Christian on Monday.

Warriors balanced in win

Stacy Edwards rambled for 155 yards and three touchdowns in Eastern Wayne's season-opening 52-28 victory over county rival Goldsboro on Thursday at Little Big Horn.

Darius Wilder, John Miller, Nolan Lancaster and Eric Brock combined for 235 more yards on the ground and added one touchdown each.

Lancaster and Malcolm Edwards led the defense with 10 tackles each. Foy Coley added one sack and Jeff Hill grabbed one interception.

The Warriors (1-0) host Winterville South Central next Thursday.

Charger boys fall in opener

Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference newcomer Oakwood Academy dealt Wayne Country Day a 2-1 loss on Friday afternoon.

Cameron Ford picked up the lone goal for the Chargers.

Oakwood Academy has been realigned into the CPIC, but will compete in junior varsity sports only this season.

Wayne Country Day (0-1) plays host to Terra Ceia next Thursday afternoon.

In Friday's paper, the News-Argus incorrectly identified the quarterback for Goldsboro High's junior varsity football team.

Dustin Uzzardo directed four scoring drives for the Cougars in their season-opening game against Eastern Wayne.
