Saint defense cages Wallace-Rose Hill

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's defense forced a couple of fumbles, intercepted one pass and turned a blocked punt into a touchdown in its season-opening 16-6 victory against Wallace-Rose Hill on Thursday evening.

Tristan Bass blocked a punt and smothered it in the end zone for the Saints' second touchdown in the opening half. Bass snagged the two-point pass from Tyler Edwards for a 16-0 lead at intermission.

Sophomore middle linebacker Dequan Cozart emerged Southern Wayne's top defender with 17 stops. Eric Futrell provided 12 tackles, followed by Reginald Price with nine. Freshman outside linebacker Scott Holloman notched eight tackles, forced a fumble and recovered a fumble.

Deanta Thomas sacked the Bulldog quarterback once and forced a fumble, which Greg Stroud recovered.

Offensively, Kenny Casper rambled 50 yards for the Saints' first touchdown of the season. Kelvin Flow added the two-point run. Casper concluded the evening with 110 yards rushing. Flow and Futrell contributed 81 and 25 yards on the ground, respectively.

"All in all, I thought we played really well," said Southern Wayne coach Trae McKee. "We've got a lot to work on, but it was good to get that first win under our belt against a quality opponent."

The Saints entertain Wilmington Hoggard next Thursday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at the Doyle Whitfield Athletic Complex.

PIKEVILLE -- Linebacker Kelton Lewis recorded a touchdown-saving tackle in the final minute to preserve Charles B. Aycock's season-opening, 22-21 victory over Clayton at Hardy Talton Stadium on Thursday evening.

"That was the best play on defense all night," said Golden Falcons coach Ahmani Owens in his debut.

Jacob Pendleton recovered a fumble for a touchdown and Dominique Young turned a reverse into a 40-yard scoring run. Javontae Taylor collected the Golden Falcons' final touchdown.

Quarterback Steve Strouse's two-point pass to Zach Wright completed the comeback win.

Michael King led Aycock's defense with seven tackles.

The Golden Falcons entertain Greene Central next Thursday at 7 p.m.

Goldsboro High 28

Goldsboro High's Jimmy Speight tallied three touchdowns, but Eastern Wayne had a little more offensive firepower in a 52-28 shootout at Cougar Stadium on Thursday evening.

Speight's touchdown runs covered 78, 33 and 7 yards. He finished with 175 yards on just 10 carries.

Dustin Asviedo added a 33-yard touchdown run.

Goldsboro entertains Jones Senior next Thursday, while Eastern Wayne welcomes South Central.
