Bourgeois tallies pair of second-half goals

Eric Bourgeois collected a pair of second-half goals in Eastern Wayne's 2-0 conquest of North Lenoir in non-conference men's soccer action Thursday evening at Little Big Horn.

Bourgeois tallied the game-winning mark in the 55th minute. Jin Lee dribbled past Hawks sweeper Justin Carter around the left outside of the box and rifled a low cross to the back post. Bourgeois tapped it in for the 1-0 lead.

More than 20 minutes later, Sean Worrell served a free kick high into the right side of the 6-yard box. Bourgeois finished the play, connecting on goal into the upper right corner.

The unbeaten Warriors (2-0) outshot the Hawks 18-12 and owned a decisive 6-1 advantage in corners.

Keeper Vincent Hagedorn notched two saves and earned the shutout in goal.

"We played a solid possession game throughout the match, but were a little unfortunate to finish in the early going," said Eastern Wayne coach Jorg Wagner, whose team battled to a 0-0 draw at halftime.

"Bourgeois' strong finishing was especially important with Andrew Corley (concussion) and Eric Rivera (broken collarbone) injured after the Fike game. In addition, we had to replace Dustin Smith midway through the game due to a pulled quadriceps."

Wagner cited the play of Matt Wolf, who organized the Warriors' attack well from his central back position.

Eastern Wayne entertains Wilmington Ashley at 7 p.m. Monday.

Ward, Hudson

pace North Duplin

CALYPSO -- Senior outside hitter Sierra Ward provided 12 kills as North Duplin turned back Hobbton 19-25, 25-13, 25-13, 25-16 in a non-conference match Thursday afternoon.

Ward added one block and two aces for the Rebels, who remained unbeaten in two outings.

Heather Hudson contributed eight kills and one ace. Casey Pate collected four aces and four digs, while Kayla Myers chipped in two kills.

Julie Ivey and Vanessa Lynch each served three aces. Brittany Carr had a solid all-around effort with three kills, four aces and seven digs. The Rebels scored 39 points combined with Ivey and Carr at the service line.

"The girls did real well," said North Duplin coach Heather Best. "We've still got a lot to work on, but we're coming along and growing well as a team."

The teams meet again Sept. 1 at Newton Grove.

Eagles open

with road win

CLINTON -- Courtney Hill, Stephanie Rhodes and Kasey Grey combined for 10 blocks in Rosewood's season-opening 25-13, 25-18, 25-11 victory at defending Super Six champion Union on Thursday afternoon.

Abigail Barrow handed out 22 assists in the three-set match.

Clare Narron added an assist and a service ace. Aubrey Reinhard contributed three assists. Kelli Gurley had two digs and one assist.

"A great game," said Eagles coach Jennifer Cochran. "It was a total team effort where everyone worked together."

SNOW HILL -- Charles B. Aycock prevailed in five of six singles matches and swept the doubles in an 8-1 victory against North Lenoir at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex.

Emilee Quinn, Courtney Barnes, Mallory Strickland, Kara Kelly and Margaret Connelly each captured a straight-set win. Barnes-Strickland, Quinn-Jessica Davis and Kelly-Connelly each triumphed in doubles.

Lauren Harris picked up North Lenoir's lone singles win.

The Golden Falcons exited 2-0, while the Hawks remained winless in two outings.

Fike shuts

Traditional 3-A power Wilson Fike swept the singles and doubles in a 9-0, non-conference victory against Eastern Wayne on Thursday afternoon.

The day's tightest match occurred at No. 2 doubles. The Golden Demons' tandem of Farrell Wiggins-Kate Woodard prevailed in a tiebreaker and turned back the Warriors' Lauren Bynum-Casie Musgrave 9-8 (5).

Bynum also played well in a 6-4, 6-1 loss against Sara Prince at No. 2 singles.
