GREENVILLE -- First-year head coach Skip Holtz officially closed out his first fall camp at East Carolina as the Pirates wrapped up the NCAA-recognized 20-day preseason period with a physical two-hour, full-pad workout Tuesday afternoon at the Cliff Moore Practice Complex.
With the start of classes today, ECU will return to its in-season schedule which regularly will include daily 4 p.m. practices Tuesday through Thursday with an off day each Monday.
"I think we accomplished what we needed to," said Holtz. "I thought they worked hard through camp and developed a good sense of camaraderie and unity. The progression was evident as we moved from individual work to team work to the development of a two-deep which has put us in a position to get ready to play. Now, we just have to continue preparations to play Duke and put it all together."
The Pirates spent nearly half the workout working on special team assignments such as punt and kickoff coverage along with punt and kickoff returns before moving into its customary ball movement segment for 40 minutes. ECU closed out camp with situational drills such as third-and-short and goal line work.
Holtz also announced that senior safety Jamar Flournoy, who was East Carolina's third-leading tackler in 2004, has been suspended from the football program until further notice for a violation of team rules.
Flournoy, who recorded 75 tackles last season, was beginning his second season at ECU after transferring into the Pirates' program from Hutchinson (Kan.) Community College. He opened preseason camp as the projected starter at free safety after moving to the secondary from his previous outside linebacking position during spring drills.
Holtz indicated that he would discuss future options with Flournoy during a meeting scheduled Wednesday.
NOTES: Sophomore Pierre Parker netted a pair of interceptions during the team ball movement phase of Tuesday's workout ... Similar to Monday's practice, the trio of returning quarterbacks experienced most of the action with junior James Pinkney (9-of-15), redshirt freshman Davon Drew (4-of-8) and junior Kort Shankweiler (4-of-4) combining on 17-of-27 passing ... Pinkney highlighted the session with a 27-yard toss to running back Chris Johnson ... Freshman LB Jarrett Wiggins suffered a right ankle injury during the early portion of Tuesday's specials teams drill and will undergo further evaluations today.
