Kinston suffers another loss

KINSTON -- Frederick never trailed for the third straight night and won three out of four from Kinston, capped by an 11-3 win before 1,510 fans in the series finale Thursday night at historic Grainger Stadium.

Nine of Frederick's 18 hits came with two strikes as the win pushed the Keys to 13-8 in the second half and 48-43 overall, while Kinston fell to 10-16 and 51-45.

The Keys scored early and often in this ballgame, battering Kinston starter Adam Miller for seven runs in three innings. Gera Alvarez started things in the first with a leadoff double to left and scored two batters later on Dustin Yount's RBI single to right. Cleanup hitter Mario Delgado then followed with a two-run homer, his 17th of the year, to give Frederick a 3-0 lead four batters into the game.

The Indians had a chance to take some momentum back in the bottom of the first when a single and two walks loaded the bases with two out, but Frederick starter Brian Finch got Stephen Head to pop up to end the threat. Miller came back to strike out the side on 10 pitches in the second and appeared to be settling into a groove, but the Keys came back for four more runs in the third. Josh McCurdy and Travis Brown both had run-scoring singles in the inning, and Brian Bock supplied the big blow with a two-run double down the left field line to make it 7-0.

Kinston tried to chip away and got on the board with Nathan Panther's RBI single in the bottom of the third, and the K-Tribe then pulled to within four runs when Rodney Choy Foo's two-run homer in the fifth made it 7-3.

Frederick answered back immediately however, as Alvarez lifted a two-run homer to left in the top of the sixth to push the margin to 9-3, and the Keys then got RBI singles from Yount and Delgado in the eighth to account for the final margin.

Finch (7-6) went seven innings for the sixth time this year, allowing three runs and seven hits. He walked two and struck out six. Miller (1-2) was tagged for seven runs and nine hits in just three innings, although he did notch five strikeouts and did not walk anyone. Kyle Collins made his Kinston debut and allowed two runs in 1.1 innings. The top of the order was solid again for Kinston offensively, as leadoff man Argenis Reyes went 2-3 with a double, a run scored and a stolen base and Panther went 2-4 with a run scored and an RBI. Choy Foo, the number three hitter, was 1-4 with his second homer of the year.
