Indians on-hit for second time in 7-0 loss

KINSTON--The Kinston Indians were one-hit for the second time in their last 11 games as Matt Goodson won his Carolina League debut for Wilmington in a 7-0 Blue Rocks win before 2,200 fans at historic Grainger Stadium Friday night.

The Blue Rocks avoided a sweep with the win and improved to 4-11 in the second half and 35-50 in the second half, while the Indians fell to 5-10 and 46-39.

The Blue Rocks got all the runs they would need in the top of the second. Dusty Brown singled to open the inning, and after Scott White flied out to deep left field for the second out, Chad Spann hammered Tom Mastny's very next pitch over the wall in left for a two-run homer and a 2-0 lead. Wilmington doubled its lead of the bat of Brant Ust who hit another two-run, two-out homer in the third, and Ust then made it 5-0 with a solo bomb in the fifth off Danny Eisentrager. Wilmington capped the scoring with single runs in the sixth and eighth. Wilmington's first six runs were all scored with two outs. All Kinston got offensively was Chris de la Cruz's sixth-inning single, and the K-Tribe was lucky to get that. Brown actually misread the ball off the bat, first breaking back before racing in and coming up short on his sliding attempt in left field. The Indians were previously one-hit June 24th against Salem.

Goodson (1-0) was outstanding in his first start, going six shutout innings and allowing just one hit and four walks while recording seven strikeouts. TJ Rios and Edgar Martinez combined for three innings of hitless relief to preserve the shutout. Mastny (2-2) suffered his second loss at the hands of the Blue Rocks, giving up four runs on four hits in three innings. He walked one and struck out three. Eisentrager surrendered two runs in four innings, Matt Davis allowed a run in the eighth, and Scott Roehl worked a perfect ninth.

Kinston opened a three-game series with Winston-Salem on Saturday night.
