Wilson blanks Post 11 Sunday

MOUNT OLIVE -- Wayne County managed just four hits against Wilson pitchers Brent Godwin and Alan Corbett as Post 11 dropped its fifth straight in a 4-0 loss to Post 13 on Sunday night at Scarborough Field.

The two Area I East foes split the regular season series as Wayne County (15-8, 10-6) took the first meeting 19-15 in a wild, comeback win at Wilson's Fleming Stadium.

Facing Post 11 left-hander Adam Williams, Post 13 pushed across two unearned runs in the second as David Powell reached on an error, followed by a single by Corbett. Powell and Corbett moved up to second and third on a passed ball, then Lee Hawkins plated Powell with a sacrifice fly to center.

Corbett moved to third on a throwing error by the catcher on a failed, pick-off attempt and later scored on a fielder's choice groundout.

One inning later, Powell slugged a two-run triple to right field against Wayne County reliever Brandon Price as Thomas Edmondson and Tanner Eason raced home. Both runs were charged to Adam Williams who lasted just 21/3 innings.

Price and fellow right-hander Michael Sigmon combined to yield no runs on only two more hits during the final six-plus innings. After the two costly miscues in the second, Post 11 played consistent defense behind the duo of rightys.

Price yielded two hits and two walks in 42/3 innings of relief work as Sigmon tossed two innings, walking one and hitting one.

"I thought Brandon threw great. Sometimes he got hit hard, but he's still learning," Wayne County coach Brad Reaves said. "I'm surprised I had to get Adam early. I didn't want to get him that early, but I felt like I had to."

Price and Sigmon kept Wayne County within striking distance, but the Post 11 offense put just two runners in scoring position -- both times with two outs in the inning. Jes Snyder had two of Wayne County's four hits, notching a single in the first, then another base hit in the sixth.

Airlon Vinson followed Snyder in the sixth with a single off the foot of Godwin that bounced all the way into the right field grass, allowing Snyder to reach third. Godwin recovered from the hit and finished the inning with a strikeout.

Jackson Massey provided Post 11's final hit with two outs in the eighth.

Godwin finished with seven strikeouts against two walks. The Post 13 defense played errorless behind their pitchers.

"That was one of his best outings," Dail said. "He stayed ahead, kept the hitters off-balance."

Corbett tossed the ninth, walking one between a strikeout and fly out to center to end the game. Wayne County finished with seven runners left on base, while Wilson stranded five.
