AHOSKIE -- Wayne County and Ahoskie combined for 29 hits as Post 11 suffered another set-back -- falling 13-11 at Hertford County High School on Saturday night in Area I East Senior Legion action.
The loss, the fifth in six games for Post 11 (15-7 overall), drops them to 10-5 in the division standings heading into today's game at Mount Olive College at 7 p.m. against Wilson County.
Wayne County trailed 10-5 in the top of the eighth inning and rallied to score six runs to take an 11-10 lead. Jackson Massey, who finished with two doubles and five RBI, had a two-run double to center field during the rally, while Matthew Holloman drove in Airlon Vinson to make it 11-10.
In the bottom of the inning, Ahoskie got a single by Jacob Bowen to tie the game, then Judd Whitehead's grounder was misplayed with the bases loaded -- allowing two runs to score to push the game to its final margin.
Whitehead finished with two home runs and five RBI, while Dustin Briggs added a two-run home run for Ahoskie.
Holloman, who suffered the loss on the mound in relief, delivered his first homer of the season in the sixth inning. Vinson started and went seven innings.
Ahoskie finished with 17 hits, a season-high against Wayne County pitchers, while Post 11 had 12 hits.
Aycock juniors
drop Wayne County
PIKEVILLE -- Aycock's Junior Legion team exploded for a 10-run sixth inning -- capped by Zach Wright's walk-off grand slam -- as they claimed a 12-1 win over Wayne County at home on Friday in six innings.
Jay Rose, also the winning pitcher, finished with two RBI on two hits with two runs, while Joseph Toler had two hits, one RBI and scored twice. Rose went the distance on the mound, striking out four against one walk and yielding six hits.
Wayne County's Nolan Lancaster, who finished with two hits, drove home Tyler Wicks in the fourth with a two-out single to cut Aycock's lead to 2-1. Wicks added two hits, while Garrett Barfield added a double.
Even Cavanaugh went five-plus innings for Post 11 as Sterling Grice entered in the sixth.
Wayne County takes on North Lenoir on Tuesday in LaGrange, while Aycock (9-8, 4-5) travels to D.H. Conley today.
Snow Hill juniors
top Lenoir County
LAGRANGE -- Snow Hill defeated Lenoir County 9-4 in Junior American Legion action on Saturday.
The game lasted just five complete innings due to rain.
Jordan Corbett, Will McLawhorn and Robert Tyndall had two hits each for Post 94 (4-10, 4-6), while Craven Taylor picked up the win on the mound.
Snow Hill hosts Aycock on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Babe Ruth baseball
10U -- Wayne County claimed the District 8 Championship with a 12-2 win over Wilson County on Friday. The win sends Wayne County to the Eastern North Carolina State Babe Ruth Tournament in Carteret County on Friday where they will face District 6 at 11 a.m. in the first round. Dylan Smith and Gregory Johnson had three hits each for Wayne County, while Justin Lee contributed a triple. Adam Pate relieved Johnson and tossed four shutout innings to pick up the win.
12U -- Wayne County pounded out 15 hits in a 23-6 win over Greene County on Thursday in District play. The win sent Wayne County into a Friday night contest against Wilson County where it needed to beat Wilson twice to advance to the state tournament. Information on Friday's contest was not available at press time. In Thursday's action, Will Broadwell and Derek Limbaugh led Wayne County with three hits each. Adding two hits each were Allen Walker, Tyler Farmer and Garrett Burns. Broadwell tossed a complete game, which ended after four innings due to the mercy rule.
