MOUNT OLIVE -- Mount Olive College head women's soccer coach Chris Shaw has signed a pair of Swansboro High School graduates to national letters of intent, it was announced Thursday.

Signing were midfielders Amber Cantrell and Jessica Smoot, both of Hubert, bringing this year's total of signees to eight.

Cantrell was named to the all-conference team during her senior year, while Smoot earned all-conference and all-region honors.

"Amber is a tenacious player with a tireless work ethic and she has the ability to play in the midfield or in the back," said Shaw. "Jessica is a very technical player who has the ability to break down defenses off the dribble or with penetrating passes."

Mount Olive is coming off its greatest season in the 10-year history of the Trojan women's soccer program, posting a 20-3-0 record in 2004 and winning its first-ever CVAC championship. Mount Olive led the nation in goals per game and set an NCAA Division II women's record for the greatest improvement over the previous season.

Mount Olive kicks off its 2005 season Aug. 27 with a non-conference match at North Greenville.
