DUDLEY -- Snow Hill's William Rhem hit a solo home run to start the 11th inning -- capping a four-RBI performance in Post 94's 11-9 win over Wayne County in 11 innings at Southern Wayne High School on Wednesday in Junior American Legion action.

Rhem added another home run earlier in the game and also posted a double and a single for Snow Hill.

Wayne County's Chris Massey had three hits and drove in two, while Michael Mintz and Willie Koernig had two hits and two RBI each. Garrett Barfield added a double.

Taylor Sutton started and went the first 42/3 for Post 11, yielding four runs on six hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Anthony Brogden, Timothy Rogers, Sterling Grice and Michael Mintz all pitched in relief for Wayne County, which had an 8-5 lead going into the top of the seventh.

Mintz got the loss in three innings of work, giving up one earned run on four hits with one strikeout and two walks.

"It went back and forth," Wayne County coach Trae McKee said. "We would take the lead and they would scratch back."

Post 11 (5-5) travels to D.H. Conley on Friday.

Wayne Co. Seniors

back in action tonight

MOUNT OLIVE -- Wayne County's Senior American Legion team looks to improve on its Area I East-leading 9-1 record when they return to action at home tonight against Pitt County Post 160.

Game time is 7 p.m. at Mount Olive's Scarborough Field.

Post 11 (13-2 overall) is currently riding a six-game winning streak overall and has won nine straight in division play after Tuesday's 5-1 win over Kinston. Post 160 is 3-8 overall and in the division -- dropping a 9-4 decision to Kinston on Wednesday.

Wayne County breaks from Area I action this weekend when it travels to Richmond County for the George Whitfield Classic. Post 11 faces Richmond County on Saturday at 7 p.m., then Duplin County on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both games are at Hamlet Memorial Stadium.

WCDS fifth in

Wachovia Cup

Wayne Country Day finished tied for fifth overall in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association Wachovia Cup competition for Class 1-A athletic programs.

The Chargers and Lawrence Academy each amassed 177.5 points.

Wayne Country Day advanced to the semifinals of the girls' soccer playoffs, advanced to the elite eight in baseball and ended up among the state's top five teams in boys' tennis.

Rocky Mount Academy, a rival in Coastal Plains Independent Conference play, finished first with 222.5 points. Statesville Christian was second, followed by Greenfield and Durham Cresset Christian.

Four CPIC schools finished among the top nine.

Wayne Christian School ended up 20th overall.

Walnut Creek Ladies Golf

Kathy Woodard won low gross in the championship flight of the recently contested Luau Invitational. Lindsey Snyder claimed second low gross and Brooke Eason garnered first net honors.

In second flight play, Jewel Ivey took third gross while Cathy Howell finished with second net.

Mary Ann Sutton and Charlotte Campbell picked up first gross and third net accolades, respectively, in third flight play. Judy Payne, Janie Perrine and Mary Morris emerged the fourth flight gross winners. Linda Cannon won third net.

Hole-in-one

Wayne Hinnant earned his first-ever ace while playing a round of golf on Father's Day at Sleepy Creek Golf Course. Hinnant recorded his feat with a 7-iron on the par-3, 134-yard No. 16 hole.

Hinnant's playing partners were Brandon Hinnant, Steve Hinnant and Pete Kascsak.
