Wachovia Standings announced; Post 11 back in action Sunday

CHAPEL HILL--The North Carolina High School Athletic announced the final standings in the Wachovia Conference Cup competitions for the 2004-2005 academic year.

The Wachovia Conference Cup, sponsored annually by Wachovia and sanctioned by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, recognizes high school sports programs that achieve the best overall performance within their respective athletic conferences. Wachovia has sponsored a conference awards program since 1980.

The Wachovia Conference Cup -- formerly known as the Wachovia Trophy -- is a companion to the Wachovia Cup, a statewide award given to schools with the best overall interscholastic athletic performance in each of four classifications.

In most conferences, points are awarded based on participation and standings in conference play. Each conference determines its own method of awarding points. Conferences are listed alphabetically by classification.

Class 1-A Carolina Conference -- Securing conference titles in men's and women's track and men's tennis allows Farmville Central to take first. Rosewood placed second in men's and women's track to clinch the runner-up position. Conference standings: Farmville Central 72, Rosewood 63, North Johnston 60.5, Spring Creek 42, Princeton and Ayden Grifton 41.5 and North Duplin 25.5.

Class 1-A Super Six Conference -- Wallace-Rose Hill stayed on top all year to clinch the Cup. Union remained in the second-place spot. Conference standings: Wallace-Rose Hill 88.5, Union 81.5, Midway 80, James Kenan 73.5, Lakewood 68 and Hobbton 67.5.

Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conferece -- North Lenoir raced to the top after winning conference championships in baseball, softball and women's soccer. SouthWest Edgecombe stands in second after finishing first in men's golf. Conference standings: North Lenoir 67.75, SouthWest Edgecombe 64.5, Greene Central 63, South Lenoir 56.5, Tarboro 49.75 and North Pitt 41.5.

Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference -- West Carteret's strong spring season, finishing on top in baseball, women's soccer and men's and women's track, allowed it to claim first place. C.B Aycock won conference championships in men's golf and softball, but did not have enough momentum to beat out West Carteret. Conference standings: West Carteret 249.5, C.B. Aycock 242, Eastern Wayne 226.5, South Central 207.5, Southern Wayne 197, Washington 168, Kinston 131.5, West Craven 123.5 and Goldsboro 74.5.

Post 11 returns

to action Sunday

MOUNT OLIVE -- Wayne County will return to Area I East Division play on Sunday against Ahoskie at 7:30 p.m. at Scarborough Field on the campus of Mount Olive College.

Post 11 will take a 10-2 overall record and a first-place, 6-1 mark in the division into Sunday's game -- the first meeting of the season between Wayne County and Ahoskie. Post 102, coming off of a 7-6 loss to Kinston on Wednesday, is 2-7 overall and in the division.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for students.

Post 94 tallies

ROCKY MOUNT -- Snow Hill's Richie Turner slugged a grand slam in the first inning, keying a six-run first, as Post 94 claimed a 14-10 win at Rocky Mount in Area I East play on Wednesday.

Snow Hill (8-3, 5-3) returns to action on Sunday at Kinston.

Hunter Chase finished 3-for-5 with a home run for Post 94, while John Conway also added a home run. Snow Hill finished with 11 hits as they were out-hit by Rocky Mount 16-11.

Drew Sowers picked up the win for Post 94.

Brian Allen and Scott Williams paced Rocky Mount's offense with three hits, while Travis Evans got the loss on the mound.

Snow Hill comitted just one error to four miscues by Rocky Mount.

Snow Hill Juniors

get first win

GREENVILLE -- Snow Hill's Spenser Albritton, William Rhem and Jordan Corbett had two hits and two RBI each in Post 94's 12-6 win at Pitt County East on Wednesday.

The win improved Snow Hill to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the division heading into Saturday's contest at home against Wilson.

Justin Bagley added two hits and an RBI for Post 94, while Stewart Barnett also provided two hits.

Bagley went seven innings, yielding six runs on five hits with one walk and two strikeouts to earn the win.

Earlier this week, Lenoir County defeated Snow Hill 13-5 at Greene Central High School.

Albritton, Rhem and Corbett also had two hits in that game with Albritton driving home two. Corbett got the loss in 61/3 innings of work.

Lane Tree Ladies Golf

For the week ending June 5, the low net winner was Carol Lane, while Jelette Culbreth took game of the week. Lane and Teresa Shearin won low putts. For the week ending June 12, Terri Forrest won game of the week and low net as Lane won low putts.
