WINTERVILLE -- Wayne County erupted for 22 hits by 14 different players as Post 11 cruised to a 17-6 win at Pitt County Post 160 on the campus of South Central High School.
Wayne County improved to 9-2 overall and 5-1 in the Area One East Senior Legion standings. Post 11 and Kinston (5-3, 4-1) currently sit at the top of the Area standings with just one loss each. Wayne County will travel to Wilson today for a 7 p.m. contest at Fleming Stadium.
An offense that has struggled to move the numbers on its side of the scoreboard got going early and didn't let up until coach Brad Reaves began holding back runners that could have scored on hits or bad throws.
By the time the rout was over, Wayne County had chalked up its highest run production thus far this season. Jes Snyder led the way with three hits and four RBI, including his second home run of the season. Garrett Davis drove in five runs and homered, while Austin Hood also had three hits, scored three runs and drove in one.
Wayne County put the game out of reach in its first opportunity with eleven runs in the first. Jesse Lancaster singled, stole second and scored on Snyder's hit to center. Hood followed with an RBI double. Airlon Vinson was hit by a pitch, and Hood scored as Matthew Holloman's grounder was misplay.
Joey Moye singled home a run, and Garrett Davis, taking advantage of a start in center field, homered over the right-field fence. A couple of two-out walks spelled the end for Pitt County 160 starter Blaine Kinsley. But, Bryant Cooke fared no better as he offered up a home run to Snyder to right. Hood's second double and Vinson's hit to right capped the big first inning.
Wayne County added a run in the second, then tacked on four more in the fourth. Snyder and Hood drew leadoff walks, resulting in another Post 160 pitching change.
Vinson and Holloman had consecutive, run-scoring singles against the new pitcher, while the other two runs came on an RBI grounder by Davis, before a Bennett Jeffreys' hit to left.
Post 160, which managed only two hits, trailed 17-1 at one point before scoring five runs off errors or hit batters late in the seven-inning contest.
Dustin Overman picked up his second win of the season in two innnigs of relief. Grant Sasser started and went the first three innings, while Michael Sigmon tossed the final two innings.
