Snow Hill goes unbeaten at Wayne Co. tourney

MOUNT OLIVE -- Brandon Brown didn't get the game-winning hit, but he was the man of the hour for Snow Hill Post 94 in the final game of the Wayne County Post 11 Invitational baseball tournament Sunday night at Mount Olive College.

Jordan Scott singled home Travis Rouse with the tiebreaking run in the bottom of the eighth to give Snow Hill a 6-5 win over Fuquay-Varina Post 116 in the nightcap for its third win in as many days.

But, the heroics of Brown made it all possible.

Snow Hill (6-3) had hit into three double plays and trailed by as many as four runs before Brown followed a leadoff single by Hunter Chase in the seventh with a home run to left field to tie the game.

After Brown's round-tripper forced extra innings, Fuquay-Varina got a two-out walk and hit but failed to capitalize, while Snow Hill made good on its next opportunity.

Rouse singled to right with one out and went to second on Spencer Albritton's hit down the left-field line and just inside the bag. The runners advanced on a wild pitch, and Fuquay-Varina chose to go after Scott instead of walking him to load the bases. The Saint Andrews College signee lined a 3-2 pitch over the head of the drawn-in right fielder to give his team the win.

Fuquay-Varina scored four in the third, with the key blow being a two-run double by Bobby Fowler. Snow Hill got a run back in the third when John Conway followed a double play with a run-scoring double into the left field corner.

Post 116 added another run in the fifth, but Snow Hill cut the lead to two with a pair of runs in the home half on consecutive RBI singles by Conway and Tommy Cobb to make it 5-3.

Brad Bagley gave Snow Hill four quality innings of relief, allowing one run and two hits to keep his team within striking distance.

Post 94 hosts Ahoskie tonight, then travels to Nash County on Thursday.

Spring Hope

PIKEVILLE -- Aycock's Daniel Stancil went seven innings, yielding only four hits and no runs in a 4-0, Junior American Legion win at home against Spring Hope on Friday.

Stancil got his first win of the season as Aycock improved to 2-4 heading into a rematch with Spring Hope tonight at 7 p.m. at Southern Nash High School.

Joseph Toler, who doubled and drove in one, and Cameron Boswell paced Aycock offensively with two hits each.

Post 11 falls

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne County's Chris Massey had two hits, including a double, and an RBI as Post 11 suffered a 10-9 loss at Nash County on Friday.

Michael Mintz had a single and three RBI for Wayne County, while Alex Casey had one hit and drove in two runs. John Wooten added two hits, while Tyler Wicks, Dave Overman and Nolan Lancaster had one RBI each.

Wooten got the loss for Wayne County in three innings of relief.

Post 11 (3-3) travels to Wilson Fike on Thursday. 0

Snow Hill suffers

home loss

SNOW HILL -- Snow Hill's Jordan Corbett had two hits in three plate appearances as Post 94 fell 13-3 at home to South Central last week.

Jason Getz, Willie Olson and Logan Hessert paced South Central at the plate, while Bobby Raspberry picked up the win on the mound.

Snow Hill (0-4, 0-2) hosts Lenoir County on Tuesday.
