Snow Hill opens Invitational play with victory

MOUNT OLIVE -- Snow Hill Post 94 benefited from two sixth-inning errors and claimed a 5-2 decision against Duplin County on Friday afternoon at Scarborough Field in first day action at the Wayne County Invitational Tournament.
Brandon Brown started the Snow Hill sixth with a single to left field. John Allen Conway reached on a one-out error and Tommy Cobb loaded the bases with an infield hit.
Travis Rouse collected the game-winning RBI on a groundout which scored Brown. Duplin County's defense bobbled a ground ball and Post 94 picked up two insurance runs.
Brown finished the day 2-for-3 with an RBI and has now hit safely in six consecutive games. Rouse, Bagley and Murray each contributed a hit and combined for two RBI.
Drew Sowers recorded seven strikeouts in six-plus innings and allowed six hits. Jordy Davis struck out the only batter he faced en route to the save.
Snow Hill improved to 4-3 overall.
In Saturday's games, Fuquay-Varina defeated Wilmington Post 10, 10-1 in the early game, while Jacksonville bested Duplin County 4-2 in the 4 p.m. contest.
Fuquay-Varina's Jay Honeycutt had three hits and scored three times as Post 116 teammate Jonathan Hart had two hits, including a triple, and knocked in two runs.
Fuquay-Varina starter Brian Daniels picked up the win in six innings of work -- yielding one run on two hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.
Jacksonville bounced back off Friday's loss to Wayne County with Edgar Huff getting the win on the mound. Three of Post 265's four runners that scored reached on walks.
Duplin's Steve Paylor got the loss.
