Gourley bangs out two hits in Junior Legion win

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne County's Walker Gourley was one of three players with two hits as the Post 11 Junior Legion team bounced back from a season-opening loss Monday with a 6-2 win at Rocky Mount on Tuesday.

Gourley finished with two hits and two RBI, while Tyler Wicks and Tyler Edwards posted two hits with both delivering a double. Wicks drove in one run as Edwards scored twice. Garrett Barfield added a double and two RBI, and Sterling Grice had a hit and scored once.

Wayne County (1-1) had 10 hits on the game.

Timothy Rogers picked up the win in five innings of work -- yielding two runs on four hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Only one of his runs was earned.

Reliever Taylor Allen struck out one in the sixth inning against one walk, while Grice fanned two of three in the seventh.

On Monday, Wayne County dropped a 6-3 decision at Smithfield.

Michael Mintz and Chris Massey had two hits each, including one double apiece, as both drove in a run. Taylor Sutton finished with one RBI.

Evan Cavanaugh started for Post 11, tossing three innings and yielding three runs on two hits. Cavanaugh walked four with three strikeouts. Anthony Brogden tossed three innings of relief, while Allen pitched the final inning.

Wayne County returns to action tonight at South Central.

Snow Hill Juniors drop opener

SNOW HILL -- Snow Hill's Billy Teston had two hits and two RBI in Post 94's 8-6 loss at home to West Craven on Tuesday in their Junior Legion season opener.

Zach VanVoorhees went 2-3 for West Craven and picked up the win on the mound.

Robert Tyndall got the loss for Snow Hill (0-1), who hosts Aycock on Thursday.
