WINTERVILLE -- Following a stellar freshman season, Pitt Community College pitcher and North Lenoir graduate Hermia Humphrey was named the National Junior College Athletic Association's Region X Player of the Year.
Humphrey spent time in the outfield and infield when not on the mound, helping lead the Lady Bulldogs to a 20-8 overall mark this season, 7-5 in the conference.
PCC just missed out on a trip to Florida for the national championships with a one-run loss to Louisburg in the title game of the NJCAA Region X Softball Tournament earlier this month.
Humphrey, who played for North Lenoir High School, and teammate Jessica Avery, a sophomore catcher from Deep Run, were selected for the 2005 Region X All-Tournament Team and the 2005 All-Region Team.
Humphrey was also named to the 2005 All-Academic Team having posted a 3.77 grade point average. She was joined on the All-Academic Team by PCC freshmen Alyssa Gambrell (3.65 gpa), Amanda Janowski (3.79) and Megan Garner (3.6).
Humphrey led the Hawks to a runner-up finish in the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 2-A title game against East Bend Forbush last season. During her varsity career at North Lenoir, the softball team captured three consecutive EasternPlains Conference titles and won 30 straight regular-season games.
Humphrey is a former News-Argus Pitcher of the Year.
