Grubb tallies lone goal as Chargers upset No. 1 Greenfield

WILSON -- Wayne Country Day's Christin Grubb scored midway through the first half on an assist from Mimi Bridgers as the Chargers upset Greenfield School 1-0 on the road on Monday in the second round of the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

The win, WCDS' first of the season in three tries against the Knights, propels them into the Final Four on Friday at 4 p.m. The Chargers will face either Village Christian or Covenant Day at the Bert Gillette Soccer Complex in Wilson.

After taking a 1-0 lead, WCDS coach Juliet Jones opted to move leading scorer Georgia Crowe and Virginia Best into a double-sweeper formation. Jones praised Kayla Flanagan and Caroline Lewis' ability to mark Greenfield's leading scorer Anna Wooten.

"We wanted to score first, then try to build up the defense. It was the first time either Virginia Best or Georgia Crowe had played sweeper," Jones said. "Everybody stepped up to the plate yesterday."

Ellen Elmore finished with seven saves in goal during WCDS' fifth shutout of the season.

The Chargers are now 7-7-1 overall.

Falcons fall

in first round

BENSON -- Charles B. Aycock's Lizzie Sodoma scored on a penalty kick with seven minutes left in the first half, but the Golden Falcons never equalized in a 2-1 loss at West Johnston in the first round of the Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

The Falcons finished the season at 7-11-3 overall.

All the scoring was done in the first half with the Wildcats taking a 2-0 lead midway through the frame. Sodoma's penalty kick made it 2-1.

Aycock outshot West Johnston, but couldn't manage to convert on several scoring chances in front of the goal.

"We outshot them and outplayed them in my opinion," Aycock coach John Fidler said. "We had a lot of opportunities. We just couldn't put the ball in the net."

Emily Stewart finished with nine saves in goal for the Falcons.

Rachel Coggins, Shirlanne Caplinger, Anem Waheed and Danielle Street played in their final games for the columbia blue and gold.

Golf

CBA takes 10th

at 3-A championships

PINEHURST -- Charles B. Aycock turned in a team score of 309 on the second day, five shots better than its opening round total, as the Golden Falcons finished 10th overall at the Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association golf championships on Tuesday.

Aycock also finished 10th at the 2003 championships.

Jonathan Burke paced the Falcons with a 150, while Ryan Campbell shot 153 and Will Vinson posted 157. Ryan Walderman (163), Redding Pittman (179) and Michael Stevens (179) also participated.

"I was very pleased with our team scores," Aycock coach Gary Hales said. "We haven't been below 310 for a while, so they really played well the second day. The course wasn't playing difficult, so people were coming in with low scores."

Eastern Wayne's Kyle Ham, who qualified as an individual, shot an 84 the first day. No information was available on his performance the second day.

SC's Warren 20th, Eagles' Ogburn 21st

NEW LONDON -- Spring Creek's Stephen Warren shot a second-round 82 and finished with a two-day total of 162 -- good for 20th overall at the Class 1-A N.C. High School Athletic Association golf championships on Tuesday.

Shane Ogburn fired an 83 on Tuesday and finished with a two-day total of 163. Ogburn took 21st in the championship played at the Old North State Country Club.

Both athletes competed as individuals.

Softball

Golden Falcons clinch

3rd ECC 3-A title

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Jasmine Dobbin and Jenny Jackson tallied one home run each as the Golden Falcons banged out 17 hits in a 18-0 win at home against Eastern Wayne on Tuesday.

The win assured Aycock of the outright, Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference title for the third straight year. The Falcons conclude the regular season at home on Thursday against Washington.

Julia Lancaster finished with a one-hit, shutout and struck out four in improving to 6-1.

Jackson had three RBI, while Dobbin knocked in two runs. Brittani Edgerton had three hits for the Falcons as Kandace Burroughs (2-5), Rusti Talton (2-2), Chelsey Byers (2-4), Chrissy Setliff (four RBI) and Karlie West (two RBI) also paced the offense.

Carrie Adams got the loss for Eastern Wayne, while Emily Sasser got the lone hit for the Warriors.

Greene Central

finishes hot

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central's Casey Morris finished 2-3 with an RBI as the Rams defeated South Lenoir 6-2 in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference action on Tuesday.

Cassie Webb pitched all seven innings, yielding five hits and two runs with two strikeouts.

Ashton Hardison got the loss for the Blue Devils.

The Rams (9-8 overall) finished 7-3 in the EPC and start play in the conference tournament on Friday at Tarboro.

On Monday, Greene Central defeated Tarboro as Morris, Webb and Blair Carraway had multiple-hit performances. Brittany Leggett got the win on Monday.

Saints, Thornton

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Karen Thornton struck out six against no walks in seven innings of work as the Saints defeated Eastern Wayne 3-0 on Monday.

Thornton yielded just four hits.

Meredith Davis delivered a two-RBI single in the sixth to lead Southern Wayne (11-8, 7-6 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference) at the plate.

Carrie Adams took the loss for Eastern Wayne.

The Saints host West Craven on Thursday in their season finale.

Evans no-hits

Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- North Johnston's Candace Evans struck out 10 in her sixth no-hitter of the season -- boosting the Panthers to a 10-0 win at Spring Creek on Tuesday.

North Johnston finished Class 1-A Carolina Conference play with a 12-0 record and will open the N.C. High School Athletic Association state tournament at home next week against the No. 3 seed from the Coastal Plains Conference.

The Panthers have now won 26-straight conference games.

Amanda Pope paced North Johnston at the plate with three hits, while Hannah Ellis, Robyn Creech, Evans and Brandy Edwards posted two hits each.

Lorenda Brogden endured the loss for the Gators.

Rosewood blanks

North Duplin

Rosewood's Jessica Price had two hits and an RBI on Monday in the Eagles' 6-0 win at home against North Duplin on Monday.

Chandra Meadows picked up the win, striking out four with five walks. Meadows gave up five hits in seven innings of work. Jessica Pridgen got the loss for North Duplin (9-7 overall), which concluded the season at 5-7 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference.

Kasey Grey added one hit and two RBI for Rosewood.

The Eagles defeated Princeton (4-14 overall) 13-0 on Tuesday at home to finish the season at 3-9. Grey had three more hits in Tuesday's game, while Stephanie Rhodes and Sarah Poole notched two hits each. Aubrey Reinhard got the win in five innings of work on the mound for the Eagles.

WCDS falls

in second round

ROCKY MOUNT -- Rocky Mount Academy rallied for four runs in the first inning and posted a 7-0 win at home against Wayne Country Day in the second round of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A playoffs on Tuesday.

The Chargers finished 7-14 overall on the season.

Travis Davis led WCDS at the plate with two hits. Kevin Logan and Spenser Briggs also had hits for the Chargers.

Ryan Ford endured the loss on the mound for WCDS, tossing just 1 1/3 inning. Ford gave up three earned runs with one strikeout, while walking two. Trent Langston and Davis combined to finish the game.

Logan, Briggs, Ben Strickland and John Bridgers played in their final games for WCDS.

Combs, SW

shut out Goldsboro

Southern Wayne's David Combs struck out 10 Goldsboro batters in five innings of work, giving up just two hits in the Saints' 11-0 win at the Cougars' field on Tuesday.

Chris Carr paced Southern Wayne at the plate with three hits and three RBI, while Michael Hudson provided three hits and two RBI. Logan Porter and Michael Steward (two RBI) had two hits each for the Saints (15-7, 10-5 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference).

Eric McLean had both hits for Goldsboro, which concluded its regular season.

Southern Wayne, still not mathematically eliminated from the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs, finishes the regular season at home on Thursday.

Cougars fall

to Kinston

Goldsboro's Monquavis Edwards struck out eight Kinston hitters in a 7-2 loss to the Vikings on Monday.

Edwards helped his cause with two hits at the plate.

Goldsboro finished its season on Tuesday at home against Southern Wayne.

Rams top

South Lenoir

DEEP RUN -- Greene Central's Blake Taylor had three hits, including a double and a home run, with two RBI as the Rams finished the regular season with a 6-3 win at South Lenoir on Tuesday.

Drew Sowars got the win for the Rams (12-9, 5-5 Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference) and helped his cause with two hits.

Travis Rouse also had two hits, slugging a home run and an RBI. Tyler Chase added two hits, while Matthew Whitley provided one hit, also posting a home run.

Josh Kennedy endured the loss for South Lenoir, which will take the EPC's second spot in the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs.

Greene Central's Travis Rouse got the win for the Rams as Drew Sowars picked up the save in a 4-3 win against Tarboro on Monday. Hunter Chase and Taylor paced Greene Central at the plate on Monday.

Warriors top

Southern Wayne

Eastern Wayne's Chad Sutton had three hits and two RBI in the Warriors' 6-1 against Southern Wayne on Monday.

Sutton also picked up the win on the mound, striking out seven and giving up five hits in a complete-game effort.

Cameron Wiggins endured the loss for Southern Wayne, which concludes its season on Thursday at West Craven.

Jackson Frederick added two hits for Eastern Wayne. Doogie Niemond paced the Saints at the plate with two hits.

CBA drops

South Central

Charles B. Aycock's Brandon Price gave up just two runs in seven innings of work as the Golden Falcons defeated South Central 9-2 on Monday.

Price struck out six and gave up six hits, while helping his cause at the plate with two hits in three plate appearances.

Jordan Carr posted three hits for the Golden Falcons, who turned three double plays in the first three innings behind Price.
