Chargers claim historic playoff win

AHOSKIE -- Wayne Country Day's Travis Davis yielded just three hits in seven innings of work -- striking out seven in the Chargers' 8-0 win at Ahoskie Ridecroft in the first round of the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association playoffs.

The postseason win was the first for the WCDS baseball program in at least 15 years.

Davis walked none and picked off two runners in the shutout win.

Kevin Logan had two hits and an RBI at the plate for the Chargers, while Trent Langston and Sam Steed knocked in two runs each.

WCDS travels to Coastal Plains Independent Confernece foe Rocky Mount Academy today in the second round. The two split a pair of regular-season meetings.

Eagles keep

playoff hopes alive

Rosewood's Kyle Bunn struck out eight and yielded four hits over seven innings of work as the Eagles dropped North Duplin 9-1 on Monday at home.

The win improves Rosewood (12-7 overall) to 7-4 in the Class 1-A Carolina Conference with one game left today at home against Princeton. Rosewood needs a win and an Ayden-Grifton loss to Farmville Central to force a three-way tie for the second and final N.C. High School Athletic Association playoff berth.

Kevin Shanle paced Rosewood at the plate with two hits. The Eagles had nine total hits and six stolen bases.

North Duplin (6-12 overall) finished with a 2-10 league mark.

Bulldogs clinch

share of title

PRINCETON -- Princeton's Robert Gourley had two hits and two RBI to help boost the Bulldogs to an 8-1 win at home against Farmville Central.

Princeton (16-5 overall), the defending Class 1-A N.C. High School Athletic Association Eastern champion, is now 9-2 against Carolina Conference foes and clinched at least a share of the league title heading into the regular season finale at Rosewood today.

Josh Thompson got the win in seven innings of work for the Bulldogs. Colin Parker added a triple and two RBI.

The Jaguars (13-8 overall) dipped to 7-4 in conference play and face Ayden-Grifton today.

Golf

CBA ninth

after first day

PINEHURST -- Charles B. Aycock's Jonathan Burke fired a first-round, 74 -- good for a tie for seventh overall at the Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association Golf Championships at the Club at Longleaf in Pinehurst.

The Falcons as a team are currently ninth overall with a team total of 314.

Weddington leads the two-day event after the first day with a team score of 298.

No further information on the championships was available at press time.

Warren, Ogburn

tied for 14th

NEW LONDON -- Spring Creek's Stephen Warren and Rosewood's Shane Ogburn each shot 80 on Monday -- good for 14th place overall after the first day of the Class 1-A N.C. High School Athletic Association Golf Championships.

Warren and Ogburn each qualified as individuals at the East Regionals.

The two-day event is held at the Old North State Club in New London and will be completed today.

Track and field

Fryt, Collins prevail

RED OAK -- Charles B. Aycock's Amy Fryt and Eastern Wayne standout distance runner Will Collins each claimed an individual championship Saturday during the N.C. High School Athletic Association Class 3-A Eastern Regional track and field championships.

Fryt seized the pole vault title with a mark of 10 feet.

Collins, a senior, collected a top time of 4 minutes, 26.74 seconds in the 1,600-meter run. He turned in a state-qualifying time of 10:16.8 in the 3,200 event, which was good enough for second place.

Fellow Warrior Chris Campbell took second in the 110 hurdles. Matt Interrante finished third behind Collins in the 3,200.

Aycock's Keith Cobb (200), Spruce Lee (triple jump) and Shonte Barnes (shot put) each earned a spot in next weekend's NCHSAA Championships at N.C. A&T State University in Greensboro.

On the girls' scene, Goldsboro senior Ashelyn James qualified with a fourth-place throw of 33-10 in the shot put. James, a Morehead Scholar recipient, arrived late after taking the SAT.

Aycock's Crystal Lewis finished third in the 400.

Southern Wayne's Christy Dixon ended up fourth in the long jump and triple jump.

Eastern Wayne qualified its 800 and 1,600 relay teams. Reina Sutton emerged the lone qualifier with a fourth-place time of 17.32 in the 100 high hurdles.

Dixie Majors

Saulton 7, Spring Creek 0 -- Nick Lacombe tossed a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts. Jeremy Lancaster and Nick Lacombe posted two hits each. Camaron Herring had a bases-loaded triple in the fifth.

Dixie Minors

Saulston 17, Mar Mac 3 -- Logan Runyon four hits, Tyler Hudder and Jeremy Edwards three hits, Jeremy Lancaster and Dylan Corbett two hits. Lancaster picked up the win. Saulston 8-1.
