Gators' Wilson wins conference title

SNOW HILL -- Spring Creek's Cliff Wilson defeated Greene Central's Chris Hardy 6-2, 6-0 to win the overall Classes 2-A Eastern Plains/1-A Carolina Conference tournament championship.

Wilson's win was the first overall title by a non-Greene Central player in the past four years.

Wilson defeated Rosewood's Wesley Lovelady 6-4, 6-3 to win the Carolina Conference singles title, before his win over Hardy. His 12 points powered the Gators to the tournament championship.

"Cliff had an excellent game plan against Chris Hardy and he executed it to perfection," Spring Creek coach Robert Jones said. "He was patient and in control the entire match."

Spring Creek's doubles tandem of Ricky Galloway-James Potts fell in the Carolina doubles title to Ben Adams and James Newsome of Farmville Central, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4. They later lost to Alex Mills and Jared O'dell of North Lenoir in the consolation bracket.

Rosewood's J.P. Cummings defeated Justin Smith (SC) in three sets for third place in Carolina singles. In doubles, Ty Johnson and Daniel Ellis (RHS) topped the Gators' Phat Tran and Brandon Strickland for fifth place.

Final point totals -- Greene Central 34 points (EPC Champion); Spring Creek 20 points (Carolina Champion); North Lenoir 19 points (EPC runner-up); Rosewood 16 points (Carolina runner-up).

edge Bruins

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock senior left-hander Adam Williams emerged the winning pitcher in 41/3 innings of work in the Golden Falcons' 6-5 win at home over Wilson Beddingfield on Wednesday.

Williams (3-1), plagued recently with tendonitis in his wrist, struck out six against one walk -- allowing just one earned run during his stint.

Still, the Falcons (14-7 overall) found themselves down 5-1 after two innings in the non-conference contest due mostly to defensive miscues. Aycock committed six errors on the game, leading to four unearned runs against Williams.

"It was good to see Adam back on the mound. He didn't throw it bad, but we had as many errors as we had hits. We didn't come out real focused to begin with," Aycock coach Charles Davis said.

The Falcons rallied for four runs in the third to tie the game, then scored the game-wining run in the fourth. Bennett Jeffreys and Travis Bartlett had one hit and two RBI each for the Falcons. Aycock also benefited from seven stolen bases.

Alex Raper came on to toss the final 22/3 innings to pick up his first save of the season. Raper struck out five and yielded just one hit. Treg Davis took the loss in relief for the Bruins.

The Golden Falcons carry a 9-4 Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference mark into a key league game on Friday at home against 11-3 South Central.

Goldsboro

Goldsboro's Cedric McClary drove in two runs in the Cougars' three-run first, but West Carteret claimed an 14-3 win on Wednesday in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play.

Eugene Norman also delivered an RBI during the rally, while Monquavis Edwards and Adrian Lewis scored runs.

Doug Marino had two hits for West Carteret. Matt Martin picked up the win on the mound.

The Patriots (15-5) improved to 11-3 in the ECC. Goldsboro remains winless going into Friday's game at Kinston.

Gators fall

to Chargers

LITTLEFIELD -- Spring Creek's Josh Gammon had two hits, including a double, as the Gators suffered a 7-4 loss at Ayden-Grifton on Tuesday.

Derek Kirby endured the pitching loss for Spring Creek, yielding seven runs (three earned) in 31/3 innings of work. Timothy Rogers came on to blank Ayden-Grifton in the final 22/3 -- striking out five against no walks.

Richie Turner and Mike Eubank posted home runs for the Chargers (15-6, 7-3 Class 1-A Carolina).

The Gators (6-14, 4-7 Carolina) host North Johnston on Tuesday in their regular-season finale.

Softball

WCDS claims

first win

Wayne Country Day's Stephanie Sykes had two hits and two RBI as the Chargers claimed a 10-1 win against Rocky Mount Academy on Wednesday.

The win was the first of the season for the young, Wayne Country Day softball program.

Erin Taylor picked up the win on the mound for the Chargers, striking out 10 against three walks. Taylor gave up four hits.

WCDS concluded the season at 1-9.

Rebels upend Jags

FARMVILLE -- North Duplin collected five extra-base hits en route to an 8-4 victory at Carolina 1-A Conference rival Farmville Central on Tuesday afternoon.

Kristen Jones singled and doubled for the Rebels. Teammates Casey Pate and Bethany Malcolm each tripled. Elizabeth Lane and Kayla Myers each rapped a double.

Myers, Jones and Malcolm provided two RBI apiece.

Winning pitcher Jessica Pridgen flirted with a no-hitter until the fifth inning. She surrendered four runs (one earned) on four hits during the fifth inning as the Jaguars trimmed North Duplin's lead to 6-4.

Myers threw two innings of two-strikeout, one-hit relief.

North Duplin (9-6, 5-6 CC) concludes its season Friday at Rosewood.

Soccer

Thibodeau tallies

100th goal

Rosewood's Erin Thibodeau posted a hat trick (three goals), her third being the 100th of her career, as the Eagles defeated Tarboro 8-2 at home on Wednesday.

The win assures Rosewood will take the Classes 1-A Carolina/2-A Eastern Plains Conference's second seed into the N.C. High School Athletic Association playoffs. The Eagles will host a first-round game next Wednesday.

Stephanie Behrend also posted a hat trick for Rosewood, while Rachel McCormick and Hannah Pettus scored one goal each.

JV baseball

Warriors drop

Greene Central

Eastern Wayne's Blake Scott had three hits and a double as the Warriors defeated Greene Central 11-6 on Wednesday.

Jackson Frederick, Chad Gourley and Chad Sutton posted two hits each for Eastern Wayne, while Taylor Sutton tossed a four-hitter during his stint on the mound.

Greene Central's Michael Speedy and Robert Tyndall had extra base hits for the Rams.

Eastern Wayne hosts Southern Wayne today as Greene Central travels to Tarboro.

Aycock defends

home field

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Jay Rose struck out 14 and allowed no runs in a complete-game shutout as the Golden Falcons defeated West Carteret 4-0 on Tuesday.

Rose gave up just three hits, while helping his cause with two hits and one RBI. Brandon Price added two hits at the plate for Aycock, which improved to 17-1 overall and 9-0 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference.

The Falcons travel to South Central on Friday.

Walnut Creek Ladies Golf

Evelyn Rose and Faye Franklin won play of the day this week. Jewel Ivey emerged low gross and Dot Jullian took low net. Novella Zambelli claimed low putts. Eastern League will be hosted by New Bern Country Club next week.

Middle schools

Grantham 9, Mount Olive 2 -- Morgan Davis struck out 10 and allowed four hits in a complete game. Davis, Taylor Reaves and Christina Williams posted two hits each. Grantham (11-3 overall) finished in a tie with Mount Olive in Division II play at 7-1. Grantham and Mount Olive will share the division title.
