E. Wayne's Campbell signs with UNC-P

PEMBROKE -- UNC-Pembroke men's basketball coach Jason Tinsley has announced the signing of Eastern Wayne High School's Chris Campbell to a National Letter of Intent to compete for the Braves next season.

"Chris gives us a good athlete that can play both the four and the three," said Tinsley. "He's big enough to defend in the post and athletic enough to defend on the perimeter. He, along with Mashon (Farrior), give us two freshman that are physically mature enough to play in the Peach Belt."

A native of LaGrange, Campbell averaged 15 points, 10 rebounds, four blocks, and four assists per game this past season at Eastern Wayne.

An News-Argus All-County selection as a forward and All-Area football defensive lineman, he was named Most Valuable Player for his basketball team, as well as MVP for his track and field squad, having twice qualified for the N.C. High School AthleticAssociation Class 3-A 110 high hurdles. At 6'6" and 205 pounds, Campbell is a four-time All-Conference selection on the hardwood and three-time All-Conference performer in track. Additionally, he is slated to compete in the NCCA East/West All-Star basketball game in July.

Academically, Campbell is a N.C. Scholar and a four-year member of Eastern Wayne's Honor Roll and Renaissance Club. He has also served for two years with the Wayne County Junior Leadership Council.

A member of the EWHS Key Club, Foreign Language Club, Math Club, SADD, and FBLA, he was recently chosen as Homecoming King by his peers and classmates.

Campbell's athletic diversity and academic success carry over into his

extracurricular activities. Not only is he an Eagle Scout that has volunteered with several charitable organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, but most impressively, he was awarded a Key to the Town by the mayor of LaGrange for the goodwill that he has created among his community.

"I am interested in attending UNC-P because I plan to major in psychology and counseling," said Campbell. "I want to inspire and encourage youth in the areas of physical fitness, athletics, and recreational activities."

Said his high school coach Marvin Bowman, "Chris is an outstanding athlete and person. He has all the necessary attributes to be successful in life."

"Chris is one of the top two or three athletes in the last 10 years at Eastern Wayne High School," he added. "Chris' leadership will be missed because he's always on time, he's very committed to everything he does both on and off the court, and he has been an unbelievable role model for our younger kids."
