PREP ROUNDUP: Pittman cards 79 to lead C.B. Aycock into second

MOREHEAD CITY -- Charles B. Aycock's Redding Pittman fired a team-leading 79 at the Class 3-A N.C. High School Athletic Association East Regional as the Golden Falcons took second overall with a 320 at Brandywine Bay.

Pittman proved to be the fifth different performer this season to lead Aycock, which qualified for the state championships on Saturday at the Club at Longleaf in Southern Pines. The Falcons last qualified for the championships in 2002.

"This team is balanced. When one is not shooting well, someone is there to pick up the slack," Falcons' coach Gary Hales said. "That's a strength for us, and it has made us more consistent. This team works hard and pushes each other."

Jonathan Burke and Ryan Campbell shot an 80 for Aycock, while Ryan Walderman and Will Vinson fired 81 and 82, respectively. Michael Stevens (96) also competed.

Eastern Wayne's Kyle Ham notched an 82 -- good to qualify him for the state championship as and individual. Ryan Nunn and Miles Perry added 84's for the Warriors with Scott Boyette (88), Adam Bouchard (88) and Nick Barrow (91) also competing.

The Warriors finished fourth overall with 338, ten strokes behind West Carteret for the third and final state championship spot. Wilson Fike won the regional at 305.

Morgan Hill competed for Southern Wayne as an individual and shot 84.

Wayne Christian's Jonathan Greene shot a tournament-best 73 to help guide the Eagles to a team score of 304 and a Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament championship on Monday at Walnut Creek.

The Eagles outshot their nearest competitor, Cresset of Durham, by 31 strokes. Wayne Christian now moves on to the state tournament on May 9-10 at Foxfire in Pinehurst.

Matt Davis and Clark Rose backed Greene's performance with 75's, while Chad Smith shot 81 and Andrew Radford notched an 82. Eric Williams (87) also competed.

Cresset took second at 335 as Village Christian (340) and Cape Fear (370) claimed third and fourth, respectively. Cary Christian (371), Trinity (414) and Community (434) rounded out the team scoring.

SC qualifies

LOUISBURG -- Spring Creek's Stephen Warren and Shane Ogburn qualified as individuals for the Class 1-A N.C. High School Athletic Association State Championships at the East Regional on Monday at Bull Creek in Louisburg.

North Johnston won the regional, while Ayden-Grifton finished second.

The State Championships will be held May 9-10 at the Old North State Country Club in New London.

No further information was submitted on Monday's match.

Eagles in playoff

Spring Creek's Ricky Galloway and James Potts battled back from first-set losses at two and three singles to claim wins as the Gators defeated Rosewood 5-1 at Herman Park in a tie-breaker match to decide the Class 1-A Carolina Conference's second seed in the N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoffs.

The Wayne County rivals finished with identical league marks after completion of the regular season and split their two meetings.

Spring Creek got victories from Cliff Wilson, Galloway, Potts, Phat Tran and Brandon Strickland. Galloway, Potts and Strickland each won in three sets.

Brandon Hietpas emerged the Eagles' lone winner at No. 4 singles.

Doubles were not contested.

Spring Creek is slated to travel to the Super Six Conference's top seed in the first round of the playoffs, but the Super Six does not field any men's tennis teams. The Gators will likely receive a bye into the second round.

The Carolina/Eastern Plains Conference Championships begin today at 3:05 at the Snow Hill Tennis Complex.

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock improved to 7-6 in the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference with a pair of wins in a doubleheader with South Central at home on Monday.

The Golden Falcons (9-8 overall) took the first game 9-0, before taking the second match 6-0.

Danny Fairchild, Brandon Howard, Sean Kelly, David Williams, Corey Walker and Blake Cooper all finished the day with two singles wins.

Doubles were only contested during the first game with the combinations of Fairchild-Howard, Kelly-Williams and Ben Evans-Jordan Pearson emerging with victories.

Aycock hosts Eastern Wayne today at 4 p.m. in the regular season finale for both teams. The ECC Championships begin Wednesday at 10 a.m. at Herman Park.

WCDS claims

Wayne Country Day's Kevin Logan had four hits and four RBI as the Chargers concluded the regular season with a 20-0 win over Word of God-Raleigh on Monday at home.

The game lasted just 3 1/2 innings before being called. WCDS improved to 6-13 on the season and will find out Wednesday if it received an at-large berth in the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association 1-A tournament. Only 12 teams qualify for the tournament this season.

Spenser Briggs added three hits and three RBI for the Chargers, while Trent Langston and John Bridgers had two hits and drove in four runs each. Ryan Ford contributed two hits and two RBI.

Logan, Trent Langston, Travis Davis and Ford combined for 10 strikeouts and allowed no hits in a four-inning, no-hitter. The quartet issued four walks.

Faith Christian

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Country Day's Georgia Crowe scored two goals and dished out one assist to help boost the Chargers to a 6-0 win at home on Friday against Faith Christian-Rocky Mount.

The win improved WCDS (5-5-1 overall) to 4-4 in the Coastal Plains Independent 1-A Conference heading into a home match today against Kerr-Vance.

Christin Grubb added two goals for the Chargers, while Mimi Bridgers and Virginia Best tallied one goal each. Sarah Coleman posted an assist.

WCDS goalie Ellen Elmore had three saves. Amanda Knutson, Caroline Lewis and Kayla Flanagan were praised for their defensive efforts in the shutout.

Lane Tree Ladies Golf

For the week ending May 1, Jelette Culbreth won low net, while Shelly Leder took game-of-the-week. Carol Lane claimed low putts.

Middle schools

Norwayne baseball 21, Goldsboro 0; Norwayne 11, Goldsboro 1-- In game one, Greg Champion picked up the win, while Tyler Ruffin had two hits and Scott Stafford provided a grand slam. In game two, Ethan Hawley hit a home run for the Cobras, who concluded the season at 13-1 overall and 8-0 in Division I play. The division title was Norwayne's ninth in a row.

Rosewood baseball 5, Mount Olive 0; Rosewood 13, Mount Olive 1 -- Connor Narron finished with three hits for Rosewood. Matt Neal and Cody Richards finished with two hits each on the afternoon. Dillon McLamb and Richards tallied pitching wins for the Eagles (11-1, 6-0 Division I). Rosewood, which clinched the Division I title, closes out the regular season on Wednesday at home against Spring Creek.

Grantham softball 12, Spring Creek 2 -- Morgan Davis allowed no hits and struck out 12 in six innings of work for Grantham. Davis and April Tucker added three hits each, while Taylor Reaves, Tara Hirsch and Carrie Martin posted two hits each. Grantham (10-2, 6-0) travels to Mount Olive on Wednesday.
