Saints' Hinson shuts down Britt

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's T.J. Hinson tossed a complete game, four-hitter as the Saints defeated Fayetteville Jack Britt 8-4 in non-conference action on Wednesday at home.

The win improves Southern Wayne to 13-5 headed into a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference showdown at West Carteret on Friday. The Saints, Patriots and Charles B. Aycock all have 8-3 marks in league play and trail South Central and Eastern Wayne by mere percentage points for first place.

Hinson struck out nine and walked none, yielding four runs in the first, before settling down to blank the Buccaneers the rest of the way.

"After the first he settled down. He located his fastball and got ahead with his off-speed," Southern Wayne coach Trae McKee said. "He hit his spots better after the first."

Offensively, Southern Wayne's Josh Narron finished with two hits and two RBI, while scoring twice. Matthew Holloman finished with three RBI, two runs and a double. Logan Porter had one hit and scored twice.

WCDS battles

in loss at Waccamaw

WHITEVILLE -- Wayne Country Day's Travis Davis had two hits, including a solo home run in the first inning as the Chargers battled in a 5-2 loss at Waccamaw Academy -- the top ranked team in the 1-A N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association baseball poll.

WCDS (4-13) dropped a 13-run decision to the Warriors earlier this season.

"I'm proud of the guys. They fought hard and never gave up," Chargers' coach Michael Taylor said.

Davis finished with two hits and scored both WCDS runs and picked up the loss on the mound. Davis finished with no walks with one strikeout, while yielding 10 hits in 5 1/3 innings. The defense committed no errors behind him.

Kevin Logan added a double for the Chargers, who return to action today against Halifax Academy, the fifth-ranked 2-A team in the state.

Spring Creek

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Greene Central's Matthew Whitley had two doubles and drove in three runs as the Rams pounded out 16 hits in a 13-6 win at Spring Creek on Wednesday.

The Rams improved to 10-7 overall, while the Gators dipped to 6-12.

Dusty Speedy added two hits, including a triple, and two RBI for Greene Central. Teammate Tyler Chase had three hits in five plate appearances.

Blake Thompson drove in two runs for Spring Creek as Jed Potter provided one RBI.

The Rams' Travis Rouse picked up the win on the mound. Derek Kirby endured the loss for the Gators.

Greene Central travels to North Lenoir in Class 2-A Eastern Plains Conference action on Friday, while Spring Creek takes on Farmville Central in Pitt County in Carolina 1-A Conference play.

Aycock drops

Southern Wayne

DUDLEY -- Charles B. Aycock evened its overall and Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference slate at .500 with a 7-2 win at Southern Wayne on Wednesday.

The Falcons (7-7 overall) are now 5-5 in the ECC with four matches left before the conference tournament.

Sean Kelly, David Williams, Corey Walker, Blake Cooper and Ben Evans emerged with singles wins for Aycock, while the doubles tandems of Kelly-Williams and Walker-Cooper also claimed victories.

Southern Wayne's Jonathan Hartley claimed the Saints' lone singles win as Graham Whitted and Hank Thomas had their teams only doubles victory.

Aycock travels to Washington today.

Hawks edge

Farmville Central

FARMVILLE -- North Lenoir improved to 12-3 in the Classes 1-A Carolina/2-A Eastern Plains Conference with a 5-4 victory at Farmville Central on Wednesday.

The Hawks got singles wins at three, four and five as Jerry Mills, Ryan Ipock and James Parker claimed straight-set wins. In doubles, North Lenoir's No. 1 combo of Alex Mills-Jared O'dell and No. 3 team of Ipock-Parker topped the Jaguars -- currently in first place in the Carolina 1-A.

The Hawks (13-3) conclude conference play at SouthWest Edgecombe today.

W. Carteret

wins ECC title

MOREHEAD CITY -- On their home track, the West Carteret women's track team finished with 98.5 team points to claim the Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference championship on Tuesday.

Charles B. Aycock finished a close second at 96.5, while South Central (75) and Eastern Wayne (71) took third and fourth, respectively. West Craven (68) claimed fifth as Southern Wayne (59) finished sixth. Washington (49), Kinston (29) and Goldsboro (22) rounded out the team scoring.

Aycock's Amy Fryt won the pole vault with a 10'0'', while teammate Crystal Lewis claimed the 400 dash at 1:02.2.

Eastern Wayne won three of the four relay events, taking the 4x100, 4x200 and 4x400. Individually, Reina Sutton emerged with a victory in the 100 hurdles with a finish of 17.06.

Southern Wayne's Christy Dixon took first in the long jump (16'5'') and 200 dash (26'17'').

Regional qualifiers will compete at the N.C. High School Athletic Association East Regional on May 7 at Nash Central High School.

Rams sweep meet

SNOW HILL -- Jamal Allison and Teketia May turned in dominating performances as Greene Central swept North Pitt in an Eastern Plains 2-A Conference track meet Wednesday afternoon.

Allison prevailed in the triple jump (40 feet, 5 1/2 inches), long jump (19-8 3/4) and 110 hurdles (16.5 seconds) in the Rams' 83-54 conquest of the Panthers.

May emerged the top triple jumper (15-2 1/2), long jumper (32-11 1/2) and high jumper (4-6) as the unbeaten Lady Rams hammered a short-handed Panther squad 94-25.

Kwan McPhail complemented May's effort with first-place times in the 100 dash (12.64) and 200 dash (27.8). Nicole Robinson seized victories in the 400 and 1,600 runs. Teammates Torre Parks (110 hurdles), Joylun Glover (1,600 run) and Miriam Sheppard (300 hurdles) contributed to the win.

Greene Central (7-0-1) triumphed in the 400, 800 and 3,200 relays.

On the boys' side, Dashon Bynum took first place in the shot put (40-7) and 100 dash (11.21). Tony Tyson claimed the top times in the 800 and 1,600 runs.

Mario Brown (discus), Jonathan Gage (300 hurdles), Carston Cannon (400) and Christopher Hodges (200) also won their respective events.

Allison led the Rams to a 1-2-3 finish in the 110 hurdles.

Eagles second

Sa'Coya Cox and Olivia Neal each claimed an individual title as Rosewood finished second in the Carolina 1-A Conference track and field championships contested Wednesday afternoon.

Cox won the shot put with a distance of 29 feet, 10 inches. Neal added a mark of 7 feet in the pole vault for the Eagles, who accumulated 136 points in the seven-team meet.

Farmville Central picked up the team title with 147.5 points. Princeton finished third with 112.5 points, followed by North Duplin (45), North Johnston (43), Spring Creek (36) and Ayden-Grifton (22).

Rosewood's Clare Narron seized second place in the 100 hurdles (23.82 seconds) and triple jump (30 feet). Erica Murray ended up second behind Neal in the pole vault, while teammate Christina Jordan was third.

Sherlita McFall recorded third-place times in the 100 and 200.

Rosewood finished second overall in the 400, 800 and 1,600 relays.

Behrend, Thibodeau

lead Rosewood

PINETOPS -- Rosewood's Stephanie Behrend and Erin Thibodeau each tallied hat tricks (three goals) as the Eagles shutout SouthWest Edgecombe 6-0 in Classes 1-A Carolina/2-A Eastern Plains Conference play on Wednesday.

Behrend also added two assists, while Mary Jo Moore and Rachel McCormick dished out one assist each. Rosewood outshot the Cougars 22-5.

Molly Grantham grabbed four saves in goal for the Eagles (6-4-1, 6-2 C/EPC), who pulled even with North Johnston for second place in the conference standings.

Rosewood opposes the Panthers on Monday at 7 p.m. at Branch Pope Field.

PIKEVILLE -- In a non-conference game at Charles B. Aycock, the Warriors and Golden Falcons finished in a 1-1 tie after 80 minutes of regulation.

Eastern Wayne got on the board first on a goal by Kasey Edwards late in the first half. The Golden Falcons equalized midway through the second half when Amanda Schlaeppi scored on a throw-in by Erin Medford.

The Warriors outshot Aycock 19-13. Emily Stewart was credited with 18 saves in goal for the Falcons, while Morgan Pritchett grabbed 12 saves for the Warriors.

Aycock (6-8-3) travels to Washington today, while Eastern Wayne (8-5-1) is off until next Wednesday when they square-off again with the Golden Falcons in both teams' Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference finale.

CBA past Eagles

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock's Jay Rose gave up just two hits in six innings of work to help boost the Golden Falcons to a 10-2 win at home against Rosewood.

Zack Wright paced Aycock at the plate with three hits and two RBI, while Brandon Price, Cameron Boswell and Daniel Stancil had two hits each.

Josh Myers and Garrett Howell got the Eagles' lone hits.

Aycock (13-1) travels to West Craven on Friday. Rosewood takes on North Johnston on Monday.

unbeaten

PIKEVILLE -- Charles B. Aycock got two hits each from Brittany Ford, Leigh Smith and Lacie Hardy to help lead the Golden Falcons to a 4-1 win at home against North Johnston in a non-conference game.

Aycock improved to 9-0 overall heading into a home game today against Greenville J.H. Rose.

Falcons' pitcher Emily Jordan struck out 11 against no walks in seven innings of work to pick up the win. Jordan allowed six hits and no earned runs.

Middle schools

Norwayne baseball 8, Eastern Wayne 7 -- Will Edgerton got the win on the mound for Norwayne, while Jordan Quinn picked up the save. Greg Champion had two hits, including a bases-loaded double. Edgerton added a bases-loaded triple. Walker Gourley posted two doubles for Eastern Wayne. Norwayne (11-1, 6-0) clinched at least a tie for the conference title.

Frink soccer 7, Woodington 0 -- Evan Price collected the hat trick-plus-one (four goals) for the Cavaliers. Jesse Shimer and Patrick Sasser also scored for Frink, which concluded the regular season 11-1. Keeper Hayden Huggins recorded two saves and earned the shutout in goal. The Cavaliers shared the conference title with A.G. Cox of Greenville.
