Golden Falcons soar at Rosewood

If Wednesday night's game at Rosewood was merely a "non-conference tune-up" to get ready for the final-five Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference games, then C.B. Aycock baseball coach Charles Davis' nickname must be "Mr. Goodwrench."

In their 12-1, five-inning rout of the Eagles, the visiting Golden Falcons appeared to be running on 16 cylinders, rather than only eight.

"Rosewood is an outstanding team," said Davis. "They'll certainly be in the thick of things in their conference. I never would have expected this type of result."

Aycock came out focused and ready to play. The first inning, where they scored four runs, clearly set the tone for the game.

Left fielder Bradley Taylor, who was a perfect two for two on the night and scored three runs, led off the game with a triple to right. The ball was blown away from outfielder Holt Rains in a fierce cross wind.

Will Spence, who also had two hits and three RBIs, singled in Taylor. Travis Bartlett followed with his second home run in two days and sixth of the season. He later added a double and scored three times.

Joseph Toler followed with a triple. Adding insult to injury to the Eagles, he then stole home. The second baseman went three for three and scored twice.

Rosewood lone scoring opportunity came in the bottom of the first. With one out, Kyle Bunn walked. He went to third on Dustin Overman's single, and scored on a fielder's choice.

Aycock scored single runs in both the second and fourth innings. They also sent ten men to the plate in the third, as six players came home.

The rest of the game's story was told on the arm of Aycock starter Alex Raper. "We're a little thin right now in pitching," said Davis. "Grant Sasser came through for us two nights ago against Kinston. Alex did him one better with a two hitter."

After the first inning, only two Eagles reached base, one on a walk, the other on a single. Besides allowing only two hits, he struck out seven, while walking only three.

Aycock will entertain West Craven Friday night.

"We just went through the motions tonight," said Rosewood coach Scott Adams. "Maybe," he speculated, "we were still celebrating the big win over Spring Creek the night before."

The Eagles next game will be Tuesday at North Johnston.

"This time off will give us a chance to heal," said Adams. "We need to be healthy when we return to conference play."
