Rosewood avenges county tennis loss

SEVEN SPRINGS -- In a contest with postseason implications, Rosewood avenged an earlier season loss to Spring Creek with a 5-4 win at the Gators' courts on Monday.

Spring Creek leads Rosewood by two games in the loss column for the Class 1-A Carolina Conference's second and final N.C. High School Athletic Association dual-team playoff spot, but the Gators still have two games left with perennial 2-A power Greene Central and one with conference leader Farmville Central.

The Eagles have just one league game left -- a Thursday contest at North Pitt.

Key to Rosewood's win was the ability to get wins from J.P. Cummins and Daniel Ellis at five and six singles. Both lost in straight sets to their Spring Creek opponent during the first head-to-head meeting of the season, only to bounce back with straight-set wins of their own.

Similarly, the Eagles' number one doubles combination of Brandon Hietpas and Wesley Lovelady avenged a loss to Cliff Wilson and Ricky Galloway. Hietpas also won at four singles, while Rosewood's No. 2 doubles tandem of Joey Churchwell and Ty Johnson also claimed a victory.

Spring Creek's three singles wins came from Wilson, Galloway and James Potts. The Gators' Phat Tran and Brandon Strickland emerged at No. 3 doubles. The Gators travel to Greene Central today for a doubleheader.

Bright, Maloney

pace Hawks

LAGRANGE -- Haley Bright and Katie Maloney scored two goals each to lead the Hawks to Monday's 6-2 win at home over Rosewood.

Freshmen Helena Davis and Gabrielle Hill had a goal apiece, while Lindsay Walton, Madison Gray and Maloney added an assist each. Erin Thibodeau and Rachel McCormick scored once each for Rosewood, while Stephanie Behrend dished out an assist.

North Lenoir improved to 11-2 overall and 6-1 in the Class 1-A Carolina/2-A Eastern Plains Conference.

Febe Barraza saved eight shots to earn the win in goal for the Hawks, who next face North Johnston, the only team to beat them in league play. The game will be played at 6 p.m. on Wednesday at North Lenoir.

Rosewood (5-4-1, 5-2 C/EPC) travels to SouthWest Edgecombe on Wednesday.

EW suffers

road loss

MOREHEAD CITY -- West Carteret's Lauren Miller and Melyssa May scored one goal each as the Patriots remained unbeaten in Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference play with a 2-0 win over Eastern Wayne.

West Carteret (12-0-1 overall) moved to 8-0 in the ECC, while the Warriors (8-5 overall) dropped to 7-2 with both of their league losses coming against the Patriots. With just one conference game left, Eastern Wayne has a solid grip on second place and a home N.C. High School Athletic Association playoff game in the first round.

Warrior goalie Morgan Pritchett finished with five saves in goal, while Patriot keeper Prisilla Morris had four stops. West Carteret outshot Eastern Wayne 11-5.

Gudac leads

North Johnston

KENLY -- North Johnston's Jenna Gudac continued her strong, junior season with a four-goal performance in the Panthers' 4-1 win at home against Tarboro on Monday.

The win improves North Johnston (11-2-1 overall) to 6-1 in the Classes 1-A Carolina/2-A Eastern Plains Conference heading into a key game on Wednesday at North Lenoir. Tarboro (3-7-1 overall) dipped to 1-5 in league play.

Caroline Hines dished out two assists for the Panthers, while Haley Newsome and Heather Creech had one assist each. Allison Hinnant had two saves in goal for North Johnston, who outshot the Vikings 18-5.

RMA tops

WCDS

ROCKY MOUNT -- Wayne Country Day's Georgia Crowe scored twice in the Chargers' 6-2 loss at Rocky Mount Academy on Friday.

Ellen Elmore had five saves in goal for WCDS, while Christin Grubb assisted on Crowe's final goal.

The Chargers (4-4-1, 3-3 Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Confernece) travel to Greenfield today.

Saints hold off

W. Johnston

BENSON -- Southern Wayne's David Combs and Matthew Holloman held West Johnston scoreless in the final 3 2/3 innings as the Saints held on for a 8-7 win on the road on Monday in their first-of-two non-conference games this week.

Southern Wayne (12-5 overall) erupted for seven runs in the first inning, before being outscored 7-1 the rest of the way.

Combs got the win in three innings of work, allowing just one hit, as Holloman came on to pitch the final 2/3 to gain the save.

"I think we got complacent a little bit. We tried to put it in coast-mode," Southern Wayne coach Trae McKee said. "They scratched back and battled hard, and we were fortunate to get away with a win. David and Matthew threw the ball well in relief."

Logan Porter had two hits and an RBI, walked twice, stole two bases and scored for the Saints, while Josh Narron had two hits and an RBI. Michael Steward contributed a double and an RBI for the Saints, who host Fayetteville Britt on Wednesday.

Wayne Christian

gains ninth win

Wayne Christian's Adam Brannan finished with four hits, including two doubles, as the Eagles defeated Cresset Christian 11-8 on Saturday.

Brannan gave up one run in the first three innings on the mound, then re-entered in the seventh to pick up the final three outs. Andrew Bass and Tyler Brannan added two doubles each for the Eagles (9-2).

Wayne Christian opens play in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference tournament today at home.

Wayne Christian's Brittany Sullivan picked up the pitching win in the Eagles 10-0 win at home against Cresset Christian on Saturday.

Wayne Christian concluded the regular season at 3-8 overall and 2-6 in the Carolina Christian 1-A Conference. The Eagles and Cresset square off again today at 5 p.m. in the conference tournament play-in game.

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne's Doogie Niemond had two hits, including a double, in the Saints' 5-3 loss at home to West Johnston on Monday.

Southern Wayne also got two hits from Ricky Oddon and Josh Morgan, while Dave Overman tripled.

Grayson Farrell and Robbie Logan had two hits apiece for the Wildcats.

Southern Wayne returns to action on Friday at West Carteret.

Eagles take

Wayne Christian's Kyle Harrell had seven hits and 10 RBI in a pair of wins by the Eagles on Monday at home against Fayetteville Christian.

Harrell also picked up the win on the mound in game one.

Wayne Christian won 13-8 in the first game, before taking its regular season finale 8-5.

McLean Smith, Michael Johnson, Taylor Johnson and Bradley Yelverton all had multiple-hit games for the Eagles, who closed out their first season of JV baseball with a 3-5 mark.

Johnson got the win in the final game.

Wayne Christian won its season finale 15-14 on Monday night against Rivermill Academy -- avenging a loss earlier in the season.

Wayne Christian (5-2) jumped out to a 7-0 lead after one inning, while Rivermill bounced back with six of its own in the next two innings. The Eagles eventually claimed the back-and-forth struggle by getting the final out on a run-down.

Brittany Sullivan got the win and Kayla Kennedy picked up the save.

Middle schools

Grantham softball 12, Brogden 2 -- Morgan Davis struck out 11 and gave up just one hit in five innings. Christina Williams, Taylor Reaves, Morgan Davis and Ashley Davis had two hits each for Grantham (8-2, 4-0 Division II), which travels to Rosewood on Thursday.

Frink soccer 2, Farmville 0 -- Sasha Holeman and Evan Price had one goal each for Frink (10-1), while goalie Hayden Huggins had two saves. Frink hosts Woodington on Wednesday.

Dixie Youth 11-12

Boys Club Eagles 11, SJAFB Braves 3 -- The Boys Club Eagles improved to 5-0 as Nick Baker and James Van Horn had two hits and three RBI each. Brett Robinson earned the win on the mound.

Rosewood Eagles 6, Spring Creek 5 -- Matt Binda had a home run and a double for the Eagles, while Nathan Kornegay scored the winning run. Josh Pipkin picked up the win on the mound. The Eagles (2-3) take on the Rosewood Braves on Saturday.

For the week ending April 24, the low net and game of the week winner was Terri Forrest and Teresa Shearin took low putts.
