Greg Warren picked up by Steelers

DUDLEY -- Southern Wayne and North Carolina graduate Greg Warren was picked up as a free agent by the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday afternoon, minutes after the completion of the NFL Draft.

Warren, a long-snapper, who graduated with a double major in biology and exercise sports science, will report to rookie orientation on May 5.

"It's been O.K. since yesterday. I was a little anxious, because I wanted to know where I would be," Warren said. "I'm just glad I got picked up. I'm ready to get out there and start. I worked out on the pro timing day at Chapel Hill. There were about 20 scouts there to watch me and the other guys.

"I worked out for 8-10 teams and didn't realize Pittsburgh was one of them, so evidently they were."

Warren (6-3, 250) said he wasn't picky about which team picked him up, but he admits Pittsburgh is a nice place to land.

"I'm glad because they are a faimly type team. Hopefully, I can get in there and stay for awhile," Warren said. "I would go anywhere. I Just wanted a chance. It's an added bonus that I'm pretty good buddies with (place kicker) Jeff Reed."

Warren long-snapped for Reed during his second year at Carolina.

"It all went by quick when I look back on it. I never had a goal of making the NFL, then again, I barely even thought I had a chance to play in college," he said. "It's been a great ride, and if it were to end today, I would be pleased.

"I'm working to have a long career in the NFL, but I've been pleased with what I have accomplished so far."
