Three Trojans make All-CVAC list

WILSON -- Designated hitter Josh Carter, second baseman Stephen Nordan and pitcher Justin Staatz earned All-Conference first team honors and Philip Pennington earned second team honors as the 2005 All-Carolinas-Virginia Athletics Conference Baseball awards were announced Friday during ceremonies at the 2005 CVAC baseball tournament.

Carter, a sophomore from Goldsboro, ranks sixth in the CVAC in hitting with a .398 batting average. He leads the Trojans with eight home runs, including a home run in Mount Olive's first round win over St. Andrews Friday. He homered in five consecutive games during March. He also leads the Trojans with 22 doubles and had a double in each of the Trojans' last six regular season games.

Carter earned CVAC player of the week honors in March.

Nordan, a sophomore from Benson, ranks seventh in the CVAC right behind Carter with a .391 batting average. He has six home runs and 20 doubles this season. Nordan, who hit a three-run homer in Friday's CVAC Tournament first round victory over St. Andrews, leads the Trojans with 49 runs batted in.

Nordan was named CVAC player of the week in early April.

Staatz, a junior from Woodstock, Md., ranks first in the CVAC and 47th in the nation with a 2.17 earned run average. He also ranks 29th in the nation with an average of 10.0 strikeouts per nine innings. Staatz entered the CVAC Tournament with a record of 7-4, having recorded wins in each of his last three starts.

Staatz pitched the second no-hitter in Mount Olive baseball history and the first in CVAC play April 16 against Pfeiffer.

Staatz is a two-time CVAC pitcher of the week.

Pennington, a sophomore from Goldsboro, ranks second in the CVAC behind Staatz with a 2.55 ERA. Pennington improved his record to 6-1 with a complete game six-hitter in Mount Olive's win against St. Andrews Friday in the first round of the CVAC tournament.

Pennington was named CVAC pitcher of the week for the last week of February.
