PREP ROUNDUP: Lancaster strikes out 16 at West Carteret

MOREHEAD CITY -- Jesse Lancaster notched a career-best 16 strikeouts and limited West Carteret to two hits as Eastern Wayne prevailed 4-0 in a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference baseball contest Friday evening.

Lancaster improved to 3-2 on the mound, but more importantly, helped the Warriors (9-6) climb into a three-way tie for first place at 8-3 in the ECC.

"That's pretty impressive," Eastern Wayne coach Jabo Fulghum said. "He pitched the best ball game that he's pitched in his career thus far. He threw a great game and we made a couple of great plays defensively to help him out."

Tyler Ham and Chris Davis each provided two-strike doubles in a two-run fourth inning against Patriot standout Lonnie Chisenhall. The Warriors added two runs in the fifth and avenged an earlier loss against West Carteret.

Lancaster aided his cause with three hits, including a triple, in four at-bats. Ham, Davis, Airlon Vinson and Tyler Mitchell each batted 1-for-3. Vinson and Davis each provided an RBI.

"The kids played extremely well, played hard and together," said Fulghum, whose team joined South Central and county rival Southern Wayne for the league lead. "There is a long way to go in a short amount of time. We have to take it one game at a time."

Eastern Wayne is the guest of West Craven next Tuesday.

Gators pull upset

SEVEN SPRINGS -- Timmy Rogers drove in the game-winning run as Spring Creek upended Princeton 3-2 in a Carolina 1-A Conference encounter Friday evening.

Princeton pitcher Dustin Myers hit Alex Casey to start the Gators' sixth inning. Blake Thompson singled, which scored Casey and tied the game at 2-2. Rogers safely reached base two outs later on an infield hit.

The game-winning rally occurred after Princeton scored twice in the top half of the sixth. Josh Thompson and Daniel Gerrell each collected an RBI single for the Bulldogs, who fell to 6-2 in the league.

Anthony Brogden tossed 1 1/3 innings of one-strikeout, no-hit relief en route to the mound win. Devin Graves worked five-plus innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits to go along with four strikeouts.

"Devin Graves gave us a great effort," Gators coach Roger May said. "He showed a lot of leadership and character. Anthony has done a great job in relief for us.

"It was a great team effort."

Rogers paced the Gators (6-10, 4-4 CC) with two hits in three at-bats.

Gerrell led the Bulldogs with two hits.

Rams fall to SL

SNOW HILL -- Greene Central banged out 11 hits, but toiled through three errors defensively in a 3-2 loss against South Lenoir in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play.

The visiting Blue Devils (10-7, 5-0 EPC) lead the league by two games.

Paul Novicki and Josh Kennedy combined for four of South Lenoir's five hits. Kennedy threw a complete game on the mound, striking out three and allowing 11 hits.

Travis Rouse, Blake Taylor, Drew Sowers and Will McLawhorn each had two hits for the Rams.

Taylor, who was saddled with the pitching loss, scattered five hits to go along with nine strikeouts in a complete-game performance for Greene Central.

The Rams (8-7, 2-3 EPC) entertain North Pitt next Tuesday.

Hawks dominate

TARBORO -- Brandon Sutton tossed a three-hitter as North Lenoir dismantled Tarboro 10-0 in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference action Friday at Municipal Stadium.

Sutton fanned eight Viking hitters in a contest shortened to five innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Josh Williams led the Hawks with two hits and two RBI.

North Lenoir (13-3, 3-2) faces archrival South Lenoir next Tuesday.

Chargers beaten

ROCKY MOUNT -- Lauren Worthy recorded the hat trick (three goals) to lead Rocky Mount Academy past Wayne Country Day 6-2 in a Coastal Plains Independent 1-A/2-A Conference contest Friday afternoon.

Elaine Holland and Kate Brittain combined for three goals for the Eagles, who climbed to 4-2 in CPIC play. Worthy, Holland and Caroline Smith had one assist apiece.

RMA keeper Anna Margaret Ballance collected 10 saves in her first-ever varsity start.

Wayne Country Day (4-4-1, 3-3 CPIC) travels to Greenfield next Tuesday.

Eagles triumph

Alicia Chong tallied the game-winning goal and assisted on an insurance goal as Wayne Christian turned back Johnston Christian 2-0 in a Carolina Christian 1-A match Friday afternoon.

Chong broke a scoreless tie with an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute. Chong assisted Ellen Rouse on the Eagles' second goal in the 75th minute.

Keeper Jennica Botonis finished four saves and the shutout.

"We did not play well in the first half, but picked it up in the second half," Wayne Christian coach Dean Williams said.

The Eagles (5-8, 4-7 CCC) entertained Durham Cresset Christian on Saturday afternoon.

Softball

Webb gets 'no-no'

DEEP RUN -- Cassie Webb threw her second no-hitter of the season, leading Greene Central to an 8-0 decision against South Lenoir in Eastern Plains 2-A Conference play Friday evening.

Webb struck out six Blue Devils and walked one in a complete-game effort. At the plate, Webb just missed hitting for the cycle with two singles, a double and a triple in five appearances.

Brittany Leggett added two hits, including a double.

The Rams (6-6) posted their fourth win in five EPC outings and visit North Pitt next Tuesday.

Kayla Cole took the mound loss for South Lenoir.

Rosewood loses

LITTLEFIELD -- Ayden-Grifton pushed two runs across in the bottom of the seventh inning and stopped Rosewood 7-6 in a Carolina 1-A Conference game Friday afternoon.

Aubrey Reinhard, Sarah Poole, Kasey Grey, Courtney Hill and Chandra Meadows each had two hits for the Eagles. Reinhard drove in one run, while Meadows provided three RBI.

Reinhard endured the mound loss.

Rosewood (2-12, 1-7 CC) is the guest of Southern Wayne on Monday afternoon. Game time is 4 p.m.

Tennis

Jaguars escape

Farmville Central rallied at No. 1 doubles and dealt Rosewood a 5-4 loss in a crucial Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A match Thursday afternoon.

The Jaguars swept the Eagles in regular-season play and solidified their grasp on the Carolina Conference lead. Rosewood (9-6, 8-6) travels to Spring Creek on Monday with a dual-team playoff berth on the line.

The Eagles' No. 1 tandem of Wesley Lovelady-Brandon Hietpas led 7-6 with the serve before falling to the Jaguars' Ben Adams-James Newsome. Adams-Newsome captured the final three games for a 9-7 decision.

Farmville also prevailed at No. 2 doubles.

Lovelady, Hietpas and J.P. Cummins each claimed a straight-set singles win. But the Jaguars forged a 3-3 tie after taking third-set tiebreakers at Nos. 2 and 3 singles, and winning in straight sets at No. 6.

Track

Warriors claim meet

WASHINGTON -- Eastern Wayne's women's track team turned in 13 total first-place finishes, and the men won 14 events as the Warrior squads claimed victories at a Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference meet on Thursday at Washington High.

Rena Sutton paced the Eastern Wayne women with three individual first-place finishes in the 100 hurdles (17.67 seconds), long jump (17 feet, 6 inches) and 300 hurdles (52.37). Kamariah Lawson emerged with wins in the discus (74-1) and shot put (22-8).

Alex Randall (triple jump), Misty Cork (high jump), Nicole Costeen (800 dash) each won individual events for the Warriors, who also won all four relay events.

Eastern Wayne finished with 76 team points, while Washington (54) took second and Kinston (28) claimed third.

In the boys meet, the Warriors won with 104 team points with Washington (43) and Kinston (25) rounding out the team scoring.

Chris Campbell claimed three wins -- 110 hurdles (15.46), triple jump (39-6) and high jump (4-2).

Lynwood Dees (300 hurdles), Paul Wruck (1,600), Michael Lawrence (800), Garrick Dawson (200), Matt Interrante (3,200), Brandon Sanders (discus) and Brandon Johnson (shot put) all won individual events for the Warriors.

Eastern Wayne's men also took all four relays.

Gators, Panthers win

KENLY -- Spring Creek's Charles Owens won three individual events and helped the Gators take first in the 400 relay as Spring Creek emerged with 81 team points in a winning effort at a Carolina 1-A Conference meet at North Johnston on Thursday.

Owens took first in the long jump (18 feet, 4 inches), 100 meter (11.6 seconds) and 200 meter (24.4).

Eric Walters also won four events, claiming the 400, 1600 and helping in the 1,600 relay. Marcus Whitney claimed the 800, while teammate Billy Salazar took the shot put.

The Panthers finished second in the event with 52 as North Duplin took third with 43.

In the girls meet, North Johnston won with 47, topping Spring Creek (40) and North Duplin (25).

Jerrica Evans emerged the lone, first-place finisher for the Gators -- winning the long jump (11-0), 100 (14.04) and assisting in the 400.

Both conference championship meets will be held at Princeton next week with the women's events on Tuesday and men's events on Wednesday.

G. Central cruises

DEEP RUN -- Curtis Braswell slapped a home run as Greene Central dumped South Lenoir 12-4 in their Eastern Plains 2-A Conference game Friday afternoon.

Braswell, William Brown, Curtis Leggett and winning pitcher Robert Tyndall had two hits apiece for the Rams. Leggett and Tyndall each added a double, while Brown also tripled in three at-bats.

Tyndall (5-1) scattered seven hits and struck out in a complete-game effort on the mound.

Greene Central (9-7, 4-1) travels to North Pitt next Tuesday afternoon.
