S. Wayne passes non-conference road test

WILMINGTON -- Josh Narron provided three RBI and David Combs emerged the winning pitcher as Southern Wayne knocked off J.T. Hoggard 5-2 in a non-conference contest Wednesday afternoon.

Narron finished the day with two hits and scored a run for the Saints, who improved to 10-5 overall. They continue play today at Class 3-A Eastern Carolina Conference foe Charles B. Aycock. Game time is 7 p.m.

Combs, normally the starting catcher, scattered eight hits in a six-inning stint. He struck out two, walked one Hoggard batter and yielded two earned runs.

Joseph Davis provided one inning of one-hit, one-strikeout relief en route to the save.

Logan Porter doubled twice in a 2-for-4 effort. Austin Hood provided two hits and an RBI in three plate appearances. Porter and Hood combined to score three runs.

Each team had nine hits.

Rams edge CBA

SNOW HILL -- Blake Taylor delivered the game-winning RBI as Greene Central escaped C.B. Aycock 2-1 in an eight-inning thriller Wednesday evening.

Hunter Chase started a two-out rally with a single to center field. After an error, Taylor drove a single up the middle to score Chase for the Rams' eighth victory of the season.

Aycock seized a 1-0 lead in the third. Thomas Pilkington plated Will Spence, who had reached on an error -- one of three committed by Greene Central.

Greene Central answered.

However, neither team scored again and combined to leave 25 runners on base -- 11 for Aycock and 14 for Greene Central.

"There wasn't a lot of hitting going on with runners on base," Golden Falcons coach Charles Davis said.

Chase claimed the pitching win in relief of starter Travis Rouse. Chase surrendered one hit and struck out one in a two-inning stint. Rouse scattered six hits and walked three in six innings on the mound.

Alex Raper was saddled with the loss in relief of starter Adam Williams. Raper gave up one unearned run on four hits in three-plus innings of action. Williams fanned four Greene Central batters and walked three in four innings.

Bennett Jeffreys and Pilkington each had two hits for Aycock.

Chase batted 3-for-4, while Taylor went 2-for-5 for the Rams.

Aycock (10-5) entertains Southern Wayne at 7 p.m. today. Greene Central plays host to Eastern Plains 2-A foe South Lenoir at 7 p.m. Friday.

Rebels upend NJ

KENLY -- Brad Lloyd doubled twice and claimed the pitching win as North Duplin knocked off North Johnston 11-3 in a Class 1-A Carolina Conference battle Wednesday evening.

Lloyd finished contest 3-for-5 at the plate. On the mound, the right-hander scattered eight hits and recorded 10 strikeouts in a complete-game effort.

Brad Holloman and Louis Edwards led the Panthers with two hits apiece.

Holloman took the mound loss.

North Duplin (6-8) improved to 2-6 in the Carolina Conference.

Meanwhile, North Johnston (3-10) slipped to 2-5 in the league.

Tennis

Gators slip by THS

SEVEN SPRINGS -- The No. 2 doubles of Phat Tran-Brandon Strickland emerged victorious and helped Spring Creek turn back Tarboro 5-4 in a Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A match Wednesday afternoon.

Tran-Strickland won 8-5 after teammates Cliff Wilson-Ricky Galloway, the No. 1 doubles, recorded an 8-0 shutout.

"We had to have it," Gators coach Robert Jones said.

The teams battled to a 3-3 tie after singles.

Wilson remained unbeaten in 12 outings with a 6-0, 6-2 decision against Rob Sykes. Galloway blitzed Jacob Pearce 6-0, 6-0 and fourth-seeded Justin Smith stopped Chase Enzor 6-1, 6-0.

Tarboro picked up two three-set wins.

Fifth-seeded Kirk Heffley outlasted Strickland 0-6, 6-2, 6-4. Sixth-seeded Joe Lee rebounded to defeat Johnathan Sutton 0-6, 6-3, 6-3.

"They just started lobbing the ball," Jones said. "It's good strategy when you're down and we weren't very patient."

Fourth-seeded Ezequiel Casarin claimed the Vikings' other singles win.

Spring Creek (8-4, 8-3 C/EPC) entertains SouthWest Edgecombe this afternoon.

Warriors dominate

WINTERVILLE -- Eastern Wayne lost just five games in singles play and dominated South Central in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference action Wednesday afternoon.

Drew Ziccardi, Drew Jackson, Ben Ziccardi and Lee Ingles each shut out their respective opponents. Jared Stone prevailed 6-2, 6-2 against Eric Warren, while Alex Bryant won 6-0, 6-1.

Stone-D. Ziccardi, B. Ziccardi-Bryant and D. Jackson-Taylor Jackson each picked up a doubles win. Jackson-Jackson didn't drop a game against the Falcons' Vaughn-Robert Hughes.

Eastern Wayne (12-1) faces archrival Southern Wayne today.

Aycock dealt loss

PIKEVILLE -- The No. 1 doubles of Danny Fairchild-Brandon Howard claimed the lone victory in C.B. Aycock's 8-1, non-conference loss Wednesday afternoon against Southern Nash.

Fairchild-Howard (11-1) defeated the Firebirds' Matthew Gardner-Ben Fite 8-4. It was the fifth straight victory for Fairchild-Howard, whose only loss occurred against Washington.

Howard gained a little revenge after falling in three sets to Fite 6-2, 2-6, 7-2.

C.B. Aycock (6-7) entertains Eastern Wayne next Tuesday afternoon.

Rams take two

Greene Central continued its dominance against Carolina/Eastern Plains opposition with a 9-0 victory at Rosewood on Wednesday afternoon.

The Rams (13-0, 12-0 C/EPC) collected their 97th consecutive conference victory heading into this afternoon's home match against North Pitt.

Brent Darden, Lin Hall, Chris Hardy, Travis Moore and Banks Nimmo each improved to 13-0 overall in singles play. Sixth-seeded Bryan Pollock climbed to 12-1 overall.

Greene Central lost just nine games overall in a 9-0 win Tuesday afternoon against Farmville Central.

Rosewood (9-5, 8-5) faces Farmville Central at home today.

Eagles escape

The doubles of Costeel Grady-Taylor Gray and Clay Pinkerton-David Sheldon each claimed a crucial win as Wayne Christian nipped Durham Cresset Christian 5-4 on Wednesday afternoon.

Grady, Gray and Jeremy Crouthamel each earned a singles win for the Eagles.

Wayne Christian improved to 1-1.

Maloney leads NL

TARBORO -- Katie Maloney recorded the hat trick (three goals) as North Lenoir eased past Tarboro 4-1 in a Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A match Wednesday evening at Viking Stadium.

Maloney scored in the opening half off an assist from Haley Bright. She added a pair of second-half goals for the Hawks, who improved to 5-1 in the conference.

Rachel Sasser tallied the game-winning goal for North Lenoir in the second half.

Bright and Brynne Fulghum each added an assist.

North Lenoir (10-2) entertains Rosewood next Monday and plays host to North Johnston next Wednesday.

Miller leads Pats

PIKEVILLE -- Lauren Miller collected two goals as unbeaten West Carteret shut down C.B. Aycock 4-0 in Eastern Carolina 3-A Conference play Wednesday afternoon.

Patricia Darden also scored for the Patriots, who are 12-0-1 overall and 7-0 in the ECC.

Aycock (6-8-2) fell to 2-4 in the league heading into next Wednesday's home game -- a non-conference tilt -- against Eastern Wayne.

Panthers triumph

KENLY -- Junior forward Jenna Gudac registered the hat trick (three goals) as North Johnston pounded SouthWest Edgecombe 9-0 in their Carolina/Eastern Plains 1-A/2-A affair Wednesday evening.

"What a difference a night makes after getting shut out by Rosewood and not scoring on 20 shots, we scored nine goals on 16 shots tonight," Panthers coach Brent Walston said.

Gudac also notched an assist for the Panthers, who are 5-1 against C/EPC competition.

Haley Newsome provided one goal and one assist.

Christina Strickland, Caroline Hines, Allison Hinnant, Coral Zillada and Taylor each scored one goal. Christine Harkins, Heather Creech and Shannon Barnes had one assist apiece.

North Johnston (10-2-1) plays host to Tarboro next Monday.

Tough defeat

Village Christian benefited from a lone goal in the 75th minute and clipped Wayne Christian 1-0 in their Carolina Christian 1-A contest Tuesday afternoon.

An Eagle defender deflected a shot and the deflection bounced off another defender's shoulder. The ball hit the goal post and sailed into the net.

"Both teams played very well, and we are thrilled to be so competitive against a program as good as Village," Wayne Christian coach Dean Williams said. "Our defense played especially well."

Wayne Christian (4-7, 3-6 CCC) entertains Johnston Christian this afternoon.

Softball

Dobbin sparks CBA

PIKEVILLE -- Jasmine Dobbin drove home the game-winning run in the sixth inning as C.B. Aycock edged Greene Central 5-4 in non-conference play Wednesday evening.

Tied at 4-4, Ashley Morris drilled a lead-off single to start the Golden Falcon sixth. Kylie Hill replaced Morris at first and moved into scoring position on Chrissy Setliff's bunt and Lindsey Lowe's fielder's choice.

Dobbin, who batted 2-for-4, blooped a single behind the Rams' shortstop to help Aycock pick up its 11th win of the season.

Senior right-hander Jenny Jackson threw three innings of no-hit, five-strikeout relief and climbed to 7-2 in the pitcher's circle. Julia Lancaster started and surrendered four runs (two earned) on three hits, while striking out seven.

Jackson added two hits in two at-bats. Rusti Talton went 2-for-3, including a two-RBI single in the third inning. Kandace Burroughs tripled in a run.

Morris and Brittani Edgerton each contributed one hit.

Cassie Webb and Brittany Leggett combined for two hits and three RBI for the Rams, of the Eastern Plains 2-A Conference.

Webb suffered the mound loss.

C.B. Aycock (11-3) faces Southern Wayne at home today.

Greene Central (5-6) takes on EPC opponent South Lenoir at home Friday.

NJ claims win

KENLY -- North Johnston remained unbeaten on the Carolina 1-A Conference scene with a 4-0 victory against North Duplin on Wednesday afternoon.

Candace Evans (10-2) scattered four hits and struck out 12 in a complete-game performance. The Rebels left runners stranded in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Robyn Creech collected the game-winning hit in the third inning. Stephanie Norris led off with a single, stole second and third, and scooted home on Creech's single.

Creech finished the day 3-for-3 with a double. Evans batted 3-for-3 with a triple.

Bethany Malcolm led the Rebels with two hits in three at-bats.

Golf

Elmore leads GC

Josh Elmore carded a 78 as Greene Central fell to Ayden-Grifton 313-322 in a non-conference match Wednesday afternoon.

Colby Murphy added an 80 for the Rams, who are 20-12 overall.

Brandon Jones and Blake Sutton contributed scores of 81 and 83, respectively.

Golden Falcons win

PIKEVILLE -- Jay Rose faced one batter over the minimum and finished with a one-hitter as C.B. Aycock dispatched Greene Central 12-0 in a non-conference game Wednesday afternoon.

Officials halted the game after 4 1/2 innings due to the 10-run mercy rule.

Rose finished with 11 strikeouts for the Golden Falcons, who soared to 11-1 overall heading into today's contest at county rival Southern Wayne. Game time is 5 p.m.

Daniel Stancil doubled twice in three plate appearances. Jordan Carr batted 2-for-3.

Saints stumble

DUDLEY -- Byron Powell singled twice as Southern Wayne fell 13-3 to Wilmington Hoggard on Wednesday afternoon.

Jeremy Davis, Chris Massey, Matt Holmes, Josh Morgan and Ricky Oddon each had a hit for the Saints. Massey and Morgan collected an RBI apiece.

David Overman suffered the mound loss.
